HAMILTON, J. A.
THE FUNERAL HELD HERE
Body Will Arrive This Afternoon
and Funeral Held Tomorrow Morning.
    J. A. Hamilton, well known throughout this county and a resident of Alamance county and Burlington for many years, died at his home at Mount Ulla, in Rowan county, last night, and the remains will be brought to Burlington for burial.  The body will arrive in Burlington this afternoon on train No. 22 and the funeral will be conducted from the Presbyterian church tomorrow at 10 o'clock. The interment will be in Pine Hill cemetery.
The deceased was 80 years of age and leaves a wife, and one daughter and one sister.  He was born in this county near Mebane and was sheriff of the county for eight years, being elected in 1888.  For many years he was connected with the Carolina Cotton Mills, later moving to Burlington, where for 20 years he was vice-president of the Elmira Cotton mills and was connected with this mill until he purchased a farm in Rowan county and moved to that place in 1917, where he has lived since.
"Sheriff" Hamilton, as he was familiarly known throughout our county, was an old Confederate soldier with an honorable record; he was a member of the Presbyterian church, and an elder, and was always faithful to his church and to the of  his church.
He was a member of the Burlington Presbyterian church, never having moved his membership.  He was well known throughout this county and had a host of friends who will be grieved to hear of his death.

UNDERWOOD, Thomas

only known survivor of General Custer's battle against
Sitting Bull; badly wounded in this engagement and crippled
all his life
Gleaner June 16, 1887

NOTE: This information on Thomas UNDERWOOD is questionable. The published histories checked indicate that all of the directly engaged troops of the 7th Cavalry were killed (264 men). There were, however, several other regimental troops held in reserve in the immediate area. These troops did not participate in the actual battle, and were rescued several days later. Perhaps Thomas UNDERWOOD was in one of these groups (cumulatively 900+ men)! It is also unlikely he was the sole remaining survivor of the troops in general, as the Battle of Little Big Horn took place only 20 years prior to his death.
