Elizabeth Anderson Persons
DURHAM - Elizabeth Anderson Persons, 97, wife of Walter Scott (Jack) Persons, Jr., of the Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Rd., died Thursday afternoon, July 8, at the Olsen Center.
Duke University and her family were her life. Born on Valentine's Day in 1902, women of her generation stayed home. No so ``Libba.'' In 1917, she left her mother and father, Mary Banks and William Holt Anderson, in Haw River and went off to Peace College in Raleigh. The Peace Lotus of 1920 reported, ``She has been a leader among us since the day she came to us, a little girl of fifteen. . . . She has won honors galore and is now our own dear president.''
From Peace, she went to Trinity College, now known as Duke University, graduating in 1922. After earning tuition money teaching in Burlington and High Point, she returned to Duke for a master of arts in history, awarded in 1928. During 1927 and 1928, she also taught at Carr Junior High School. In 1929, she received a fellowship for study at the University of Pennsylvania, returning to Duke as a house counselor in 1930. She was successively appointed assistant to the dean of the women's college, dean of freshmen, and secretary of the committee on admissions of the women's college. In 1939, she married Jack Persons, of the department of athletics at Duke University, and in 1945, their son, Walter Scott Persons, III, was born. This same year she was named director of admissions of the women's college. In this post she traveled widely, ably presenting the advantages of a Duke education to secondary school women and their teachers. She also represented Duke on the College Entrance Examination Board. She served Duke University and Duke women for 41 years, retiring in 1971. Her son, Scott, is a graduate of Duke University, and her brother, W. Banks Anderson, Sr., was the first professor of ophthalmology at the Duke Medical Center.
Elizabeth was active in the churchwomen of the First Presbyterian Church and devoted to her book club, the Folio. She is survived by her husband, Jack, of the Forest at Duke; her son, Scott and his wife, Susan Persons; a grandson, Walter Scott Persons, IV, of Tuckasegee; and nephews, W. Banks Anderson, Jr., M.D., E. Everett Anderson, M.D., Charles A. Anderson, and W. Holt Anderson, all of Durham.
On Saturday, July 17, a service of interment will be held at 10 a.m. at the family plot north of Mebane at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church. This will be followed at 12 noon by a service of celebration and remembrance at the First Presbyterian Church.

Duke swim coach loyal to students, city, school
Author: Flo Johnston
August 27, 2005
Walter Scott Persons Jr.
A Duke University icon will be remembered not just for his 45 years of coaching swimming and lacrosse, but for teaching generations of Durham children to swim.
Walter Scott Persons Jr., 95, known to hundreds of Duke athletes as "Coach" and to friends and family as "Jack" died Monday in the Olsen Center at The Forest at Duke.
During summer months the coach taught swimming and lifesaving to children from the city. The only drawback, said a Durham man who learned to swim under his tutelage, was the cold water in the Duke pool. It was kept at training temperature and was difficult for a skinny kid to handle.
During their years at Duke, the coach and his wife, Elizabeth Anderson Persons, who preceded him in death, lived on Swift Avenue not far from campus. She was the dean of admissions for the Women's College.
"They were quite a couple," said Nancy Anderson, whose husband, Banks Anderson, was the coach's wife's nephew. "Generations of players would come back to see them and they always served Brunswick stew and barbecue before the lacrosse games," she said.
Nancy Anderson describes the coach as "drop-dead handsome," but ironically, she said, the family never saw him in a bathing suit. They teased him about it. And he was not a swimmer in his older years.
"He had assistants in the water carrying out his instructions. He walked around the side of the pool [in his street clothes]. There was a little mystery about the man," Nancy Anderson said.
But Persons knew his stuff when it came to coaching. He was only 20 in 1931 when he was named head swimming coach and was the youngest head coach at a major university in the country, according to dukego.com, a Web site for Duke Sports Information. Persons led his teams to 207 victories in 378 meets.
In 1938, Persons added Duke's new lacrosse team to his coaching responsibilities. Sports Information notes that he led Duke to "one of the greatest upsets in collegiate lacrosse history in 1946 when the Blue Devils shocked national power Maryland, 12-4."
"He was a part of Duke history," said Holt Anderson, a nephew and a Duke graduate.    "He attended every home football game since 1929, the year Wallace Wade opened, except one," Holt Anderson said.    "I was with him the day he missed the game in 2003 because he had to go to the emergency room. He was upset about missing the game and wanted updates during the game. He kept saying, 'Maybe we can get out of here.' "
The coach had the same block of 14 football tickets since 1929, according to his nephew. With the tickets that he gave to family and friends, he also passed out seat cushions and programs and he made sure his guests were comfortable with a drink, peanuts in the shell and suntan lotion.
But if you were going to join the coach's crowd for the game, you were expected to stay until the final dust settled.
"You never left before the end of the game, whether Duke was ahead by 40 or behind by 40," Holt Anderson said. "He did not like it a bit for anybody to leave early."
Nancy Anderson, a nurse, said that aging is one of her ministries, and that she spent a lot of time with Persons during the past few years, especially since his wife died.
"For me it was a blessing," she said.
"He kept up with all of his players and was much more to them than a coach. He knew their children, he listened and he cared. And he was so compassionate.
"Two weeks ago I sent my watch to be fixed. He noticed and said, 'You gotta' have a watch.' Look in this drawer. He gave me a watch."
The coach did not have a dramatic illness at the end of his life, she said. Two months ago, he went into nursing care and continued to move around in an electric wheelchair, going to concerts and participating in events at The Forest.
"Then he broke his tooth and did not eat. He lost a lot of weight and revised his goal of wanting to live to 100," Nancy Anderson said. "During the last month, he told the doctor he was ready to die."
Persons retired from Duke coaching in 1975 and was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. In his acceptance speech he said, "When I first came here ... I knew I was where I wanted to be and with whom I wanted to be. I never wanted to leave or be anywhere else."
His burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church on N.C. 119 in Mebane. A memorial service and celebration of his life will follow the same day at 2 p.m. at Durham's First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.
The coach's survivors include the Durham Andersons "who overtook him," Nancy Anderson said. Also, his son, Walter Scott Persons III and his wife, Susan, of Tuckasegee; a grandson, Walter Scott Persons IV of the home; nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces.

Walter Scott Persons Jr.
DURHAM -- Walter Scott Persons Jr., 96, of the Forest at Duke, 2701 Pickett Road, died on August 22, 2005. A service of celebration will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Durham on Thursday September 1st, at 2 p.m.
"Jack" or "Coach" Persons, as he was commonly addressed, came to Durham in the fall of 1927 to enroll at Duke University. Though he arrived days late for his first class having helped the Red Cross to locate and recover bodies swept underwater by a hurricane that had devastated Florida he never really left Durham or Duke thereafter, dedicating himself to teaching swimming, life saving, and physical education and to coaching swimming and lacrosse. He met Elizabeth Anderson Persons, his wife of 60 years who predeceased him, at Duke (she would become the Director of Admissions for the Woman's College), and together they made their home in Durham, their life at Duke.
His early years were not so stable. Born the first of four brothers in Memphis, TN on October 2, 1908, to Helene McMenamee and Walter Scott Persons, he moved often with his family to Nashville, Louisville, several southern Indiana towns, and eventually to Orlando, as his father took jobs with successive newspapers. It was in Indiana, on Silver Creek, that he learned to swim with grace and power by observing and imitating a skilled Englishman.
It was in Orlando at age 14, as he began his successful amateur boxing career, that he acquired his nickname, "Jack." At his first fight, after his opponent James "Spike" McCain was announced, he was introduced by the name he had naively printed on the entry form: Walter Scott Persons, Jr. The fight crowd tittered. Thenceforth, he fought as "Kid Jack" Persons, and the "Jack" stuck with him for the rest of his life.
"Jack" was not the only pseudonym that he invented for himself. As a young sports reporter for the Orlando paper, he was often required to write copy describing his own athletic exploits whether as a boxer, marathon swimmer, halfback and defensive tackle on his high school football team, captain of the track team, or as the only adolescent paid by a local promoter to take the field against Red Grange and the Galloping Ghost's barnstorming offseason professional football team. Sensitive to possible charges of self glorification, he wrote under the pen name, Retlaw Snosrep, which is of course his own name backwards. (Retlaw later returned the promoter's ten dollars to protect his amateur status.)
The summer before he enrolled at Duke, and for two summers thereafter, he ran the aquatics program in West Reading, PA, producing championship swimming teams and water polo titlists in the Schuylkill Valley. In 1930, with the opening of Duke's new West Campus pool, his West Reading experience emboldened him to approach William Wanamaker, then chairman of the athletic council, and suggests that the University hire him as its swimming coach. As a twenty-year-old junior, he became the youngest head coach of any college sport in the nation. Coach Persons graduated in the class of 1932, but he headed Duke's swim team for 45 years, until 1975. During his tenure, the Blue Devil swimmers recorded 207 victories in 378 meets, winning state and conference championships while twice going undefeated. In 1970, he was honored for his service to the sport by the United States College Swimming Coaches Association.
In 1938, Coach Persons added Duke's new lacrosse team to his responsibilities. By the time he retired from that position in 1966, he had introduced lacrosse to the South. His teams ranked in the national polls for 15 consecutive years. In 1951 they were runners-up for the national championship, in the process defeating defending champion, Johns Hopkins, which had been undefeated the previous four seasons. He was inducted into the North Carolina chapter of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Between swimming and lacrosse, he developed 19 all-Americans. At reunions, when his former athletes would come to pay their respects, he would recite anecdotes about them from a half century ago and be current regarding their present endeavors. He treasured relationships and loyalties. After the Duke Football stadium was completed in October of 1929, he attended every home game ever held there, with but one exception . . . when he was hospitalized.
During last year's season, he could be found seated in his wheel chair on the east side, just behind the top row of seats where a dozen or more friends and family, for whom he bought season tickets every year, shared the experience. Thousands regarded "Coach" as a personal friend because of his abiding interest in them and in their lives.
In addition to his coaching, he taught swimming, life saving, and physical education at Duke and, for 52 years, conducted summer swimming classes on campus teaching three generations of Durham children to swim, survive in the water, and save others. He was chairman of the Durham Red Cross chapter's life saving and water safety program and was honored by the American Red Cross for 65 years of advocating, practicing, and teaching water safety. When Coach Jack Persons was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, he said in his acceptance speech: "When I first came here . . . I knew I was where I wanted to be and with whom I wanted to be. I never wanted to leave or be anywhere else." He got what he wanted.
During his later years, retired at the Forest at Duke, Jack and Elizabeth made and cultivated many new friends who, together with family, former students, Duke Faculty and staff, and the Durham community, celebrate the long life of this remarkable man.
He is survived by his son, Walter Scott Persons, III and his wife, Susan of Tuckasegee, NC; by grandson, Walter Scott Persons, IV of the home; by nephews and nieces, H. William Persons of Jupiter, FL, George M. Persons of Mill Spring, NC, James J. Persons of Eustis, FL, F. Scott Persons, Deanne Peek, and Lynn Persons, all of Georgetown, TX; W. Banks Anderson, Jr. and wife, Nancy, E. Everett Anderson, Charles A. Anderson and wife, Martha Jane Ziegler Anderson, Emily Terrell Anderson, W. Holt Anderson and wife, Susan, all of Durham; by numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces.
A family graveside service of interment will be held Thursday morning, September 1st, at the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, Mebane, NC to be followed by the afternoon Durham service.
Memorial gifts may be made in lieu of flowers to: the Cross Roads Presbyterian Church, 3302 N. NC 119, Mebane, NC 27302; or to the Duke University Department of Athletics.

Walter Scott Persons Jr.
Walter Scott Persons Jr., who died on Aug. 22 at the age of 96, missed only one Duke football game, and then because he was in the hospital, in 76 years as a fan.
That amazing record for the former Duke swimming and lacrosse coach was simply the grandest example of how Persons lived his life.
All of that and more will be celebrated today when a memorial service is held in Persons' honor in Durham.
A burial service will first be held at Cross Roads Presbyterian Church on N.C. 119 in Mebane at 10 a.m. The memorial service will follow at Durham's First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St at 2 p.m.
Persons, a former Duke swimmer and 1932 Duke graduate, was the Duke swimming coach for 44 years, its lacrosse coach for 28 years, and spent 52 years teaching swimming, life-saving and physical education in the Durham area.
Rev. Joseph S. Harvard, who will lead the memorial service in Durham, said Persons was a dear friend, delightful human being and a beloved figure in Durham since he "taught most everybody in this area how to swim."
Persons, married to the former Elizabeth Anderson, another Duke graduate and lifelong fan, for 60 years until she died in 1999, also had a touch of the rascal in him.
He actually had two nicknames during his life. Known as "Jack" to his family and friends, Persons picked up that first one at the beginning of an amateur boxing career in Orlando at the age of 14.
At his first fight, after his opponent -- James "Spike" McCain -- was announced, he was introduced by his given name: Walter Scott Persons Jr.
The fight crowd had a good laugh at that so Persons started going by "Kid Jack" Persons in the ring and, eventually, by "Jack" everywhere else.
It was stories like those and remembrances of his Duke teams and the athletes he coached throughout his long life that Harvard said will be missed.
"He could remember with clarity and detail all events and they were always fascinating [stories]," Harvard said. "He was a walking historian that provided us with the memory of who we are. That will be sorely missed."
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Cross Roads Presbyterian at 3302 North N.C. 119, Mebane NC 27302 or to the Duke University athletics department.

Benjamin Edison Walker
At the early hour of 2 o'clock last Thursday morning, January 18, after a brief illness with influenza followed by pheneumonia, the little spirit of Benjamin Edison Walker, the six year old son of Mark S. Walker, passed into the great beyond.
Little Benjamin's life here on earth was of but short duration, but the sweet memory of it will long be felt in the hearts of those who loved him. He was of a mild, lovable disposition and was greatly admired by all who knew him.
His father, two sisters and grandmother, besides a host of relatives and friends mourn his loss
A short service was conducted at the grave in a very impressive manner by the pastor, the Rev. Robertson, Thursday afternoon, and the little body was tenderly laid to rest in Cross Roads cemetery by the side of his young mother who preceded him about four years ago, there to await the Resurrection morn.
In the graveyard softly sleeping, Where the flowers gently wave; Lies the one we love so dearly, In the silent lonely grave.
A Loved One.
