Joshua Johnson was born 15 September, 1822, the son of Joel Johnson Sr. and his second wife Rachel McGee. Joel Johnson was almost 70 years old when fathering Joshua. Joshua first married Nancy Cain on 4 June, 1846, the daughter of John and Dolly Cain who lived near Diggens Meadow in Bladen County. Nancy Cain had been born 16 October, 1830. She died on 22 May, 1855, apparently from complications with childbirth. Joshua and Nancy had the following

ii. Joel M. Johnson, b. 15 October, 1850
iii. Ellen Ann Johnson, b. 27 September, 1852
iv. Alexander A. Johnson, b. 18 January, 1855
Joshua Johnson married a second time to Jane Edge on 23 August, 1855. She was the daughter of James Edge and Sarah Elizabeth Long. Jane was born 3 September, 1819, and died 15 April, 1897. Joshua Johnson died 11 December, 1903.
Joshua was a Methodist Minister. His bible shows the date 29 May, 1870 which could be the date that he was ordained. His religious guide, Doctrines of Discipline, was bought from C.M. Pepper in 1868.
