Washington during retreat from Long Island, New York 1777-79: Served with Gen Wm Moultrie in Defense of Charleston, Feb 3 '79 with Moultrie in Driving British from Port Royal Island (Beaufort) 1780-83: Colonel, Defense of SC Left active duty in 1783 Paid bounty of 20,000 acres of land in Tennessee for war service. in 1789, this land donated to U of NC later sold for $14,000 1797: Appointed Major General in NC Militia May 22 1774: Admitted to Middle Temple of Masons 1808 - 12: Served as Grand Master of Masons 1784 - 1812: 3 Terms in NC House and 18 Terms in NC Senate. 5 Terms as speaker of Senate. 1789: Member of State Convention that approved US Constitution 1789 - 1824: Served on University of NC Board of Trustees. Several terms as chairman 1817: Finished New Lighthouse (Old Baldy) on Bald Head Island, part of southport seal. 1792: Gave land adjacent to Fort Johnston for the town of Smithville. Appointed to original board of comissioners. Smith and Joshua Potts drew up plans for Smithville 1801 - 04: Contracted with the US Govt to rebuild Ft Johnston in order to repay debt for Colonel Reed's public default as collecter of customs for Port of Wilmington. Smith was guarantor for Colonel Reed's performance bond. Dec 10, 1810 - Dec 10, 1811: Governor of North Carolina. Advocated public education, roads and water transportation, environmental measures, public health and prison reform. Ended royal rule in Carolina. 1775: Col 2nd NC Reg Defeated British at Norfolk 1776: B/Gen. with Gen. Moultrie at Charleston 1777-79: M/Gen Commander, War Dept of the South. The south's only Maj. General in the Revolutionary War. 1778-79: Troops lost Savannah to British and failed to win battle for St Augustine.
