STOWE, GEORGE C.

  • Previously served as Captain of Company I, 33rd Regiment N. C. Troops and was on duty as Captain and Enrolling Officer in the 9th Congressional District when he was appointed Captain of this company. Served with the company until the battalion was disbanded in June 1864. Later appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Regiment N. C. Senior Reserves.

  • Captured in Cocke County, Tenn., January 14, 1864 and confined at Rock Island, Ill., until transferred for exchange February 25, 1865. Date and place of exchange not reported, but he was admitted to hospital at Richmond, Va., March 6, 1865 with "diarrhea chronic." Furloughed from hospital for thirty days March 7, 1865.

  • Born in Rowan County and enlisted in Burke County at age 44, October 14, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for through July l, 1864.

  • Born in Yadkin County and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted in Burke County at age 41, October 14, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company D, 9th Regiment N. C. State Troops (1st Regiment N. C. Cavalry) when this battalion was disbanded in June 1864.

  • Name reported on undated bounty roll. COCHRAN; JOHN T., Private Born in Catawba County and resided as a farmer when he enlisted in Burke County at age 18, March 1, 1864 for the war. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company D, 9th Regiment N. C. State Troops (1st Regiment N. C. Cavalry) When this battalion was disbanded in June 1864.

  • Resided in Yadkin County. Federal Provost Marshal records state that he was confined at Knoxville, Tenn., August 5, 1864 as a "rebel deserter." Register of prisoners of war states that he "took the oath August 8, 1864 and was sent to Chattanooga, Tenn., August 9, 1864."

  • Enlisted in Burke County September 29, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company A, 19th Regiment N. C. Troops (2nd Regiment N. C. Cavalry) June 4, 1864.

  • Resided in Caldwell County. Captured in Cocke County, Tenn., January 24, 1864 and confined at Rock Island, Ill., where he remained until released after taking the Oath of Allegiance June 20, 1865.

  • Born in McDowell, County and was by occupation a farmer when he enlisted in Burke County at age 44, October 10, 1863 for the war. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company D, 9th Regiment N. C. State Troops (1st Regiment N. C. Cavalry) when this battalion was disbanded in June 1864.

  • Captured in Cocke County, Tenn., January 14, 1864 and confined at Rock Island, Ill., where he remained until transferred for exchange February 15, 1865. Date and place of exchange not reported.

  • Captured in Cocke County, Tenn., January 14, 1864 and confined at Rock Island, Ill., where he remained until transferred for exchange February 25, 1865. Exchanged at Boulwares Wharf, James River, Va., March 5, 1865.

  • Captured in Cocke County, Tenn., January 14, 1864 and confined at Rock Island, Ill., where he died July 6, 1864 of "typhoid pneumonia."
