16th REGIMENT, Co. E, N.C. TROOPS
COMPANY E, 16th REGIMENT N. C. STATE TROOPS
This company, known as the Burke Tigers, was from Burke County and enlisted at Morganton on May 10. 1861. It was then mustered into service and assigned to this regiment as Company E. After joining the regiment the company functioned as a part of the regiment, and its history for the war period is reported as part of the regimental history.
The information contained in the following roster of the company was compiled principally from company muster rolls for May 10-August 31, 1861;January-February, 1862; January-February, 1863; and July, 1863-October, 1864 No company muster rolls were found for September-December, 1861; March-December, 1862; March-June. 1863; or for the period after October, 1864. In addition to the company muster rolls, Roll of Honor records, receipt rolls, hospital records, prisoner of war records, and other primary records, supplemented by state pension applications, United Daughters of the Confederacy records, and postwar rosters and histories, all provided useful information.

KIRKSEY, ELIJAH J., Resided in Burke County and enlisted at age 36. Elected Captain to rank from May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he resigned on May 31, 1862, Later served as Private in this company.
CLOUD, ABEL S., Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 20, May 10, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant and was promoted to 1st Sergeant in September, 1861-February, Elected 1st Lieutenant on or about April 26, 1862, and was promoted to Captain on May 31, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863, Confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, and at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he arrived July 20, Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on January 27, while a prisoner of war and was nominally transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.
KAYLOR, AMBROSE L., Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 26. Elected 3rd Lieutenant to rank from May 10, 1861, and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on April 25, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the forearm at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. Promoted to Captain on January 17, 1864. Returned to duty prior to March 1, 1864, and was present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

BRANCH, HENRY R., 3rd Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 23, May 10, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was appointed 3rd Lieutenant on December 23, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at Falling Waters, Maryland, July 14, 1863. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C., until transferred tojohnson's Island, Ohio, August 8, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, where he arrived on February 14, 1864. Transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, where he arrived June 25, 1864. Released at Fort Delaware on June 12, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
CHRISTENBERRY, THOMAS C, 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 25, May 10. 1861. Mustered in as Private and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on July 29, 1862. Present or accounted for until he resigned on September 24, 1862, because "I have a wife and three small children at home without protection; also, my health having become impaired having been in service for the last seventeen months. . . ." Resignation accepted on or about October 6. 1862.
KEBLER, JOHN M., 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 30. Elected 2nd Lieutenant on May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he resigned on or about August 5, 1862. Reason he resigned not reported.
KINCAID, JAMES B., 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 29. Elected 1st Lieutenant to rank from May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he was defeated for reelection when the regiment was reorganized on April 26, 1862; however, he was appointed Assistant Commissary of Subsistence (1st Lieutenant) the same day and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment.

RECTOR, JACOB N., 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 23, May 10, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal and was elected 2nd Lieutenant on July 29, 1862. Present or accounted for until killed at the second battle of Manassas, Virginia, August 29, 1862.
SIDES, JOHN M., 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 20, May 10, 1861. Mustered in as Private. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg at the second battle of Manassas, Virginia, August 29, 1862. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on September 26, 1862, and returned to duty prior to March 1, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on January 27, 1865. Present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.

WARLICK, PORTLAND W., 2nd Lieutenant - Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 22, May 10, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant and was elected 2nd Lieutenant to rank from August 20, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Died at home in Burke County on or about July 15, 1862, of wounds.

TAYLOR, CALVIN, Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 29, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in an unspecified action on February 8, 1863. Returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded in the chest at the North Anna River, Virginia, May 23, 1864. Returned to duty in September-October, 1864, and was present or accounted for until captured at or near Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
TAYLOR, LAWSON, Private -Enlisted at Camp Vance on August 2, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until he died on July 28, 1864, of disease. Place of death not reported.
THOMPSON, JOHN, Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 28, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Returned to duty on October 28, 1863, and was present or accounted for until captured at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
UNGER, JOSHUA, Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 44, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on March 31, 1862. Reason discharged not reported.
VAN HORN, JOSEPH A., Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 24, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at Falling Waters, Maryland, July 14, 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until paroled and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received March 6, 1864, for exchange. Returned to duty prior to June 29, 1864, when he deserted to the enemy at Petersburg, Virginia. Confined at Point Lookout until transferred to Elmira, New York, August 8, 1864. Died at Elmira on or about January 17, 1865, of "chronic diarrhoea."
WHISENHUNT, GEORGE, Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 23, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Seven Pines, Virginia, May 31, 1862.
WHISENHUNT, JAMES, Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 19, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died at Warm Springs, Virginia, October 6, 1861. Cause of death not reported.
WILLIAMS, JOHN H., Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 26, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Richmond, Virginia, June 29, 1862, of "feb[ris] typh[oides]."
WILLIS, WILLIAM E., Private -Resided in Burke County where he enlisted at age 19, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until killed at Shepherdstown, Virginia, September 20, 1862.
WISHON, THOMAS J., Private -Previously served in Company B of this regiment. Transferred to this company on April 26, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3-4, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 18, 1865, and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia, for exchange. Reported present with a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia, February 28, 1865. Paroled again at Morgan-ton on May 15, 1865.
WORKMAN, RUFUS, Private -Resided in Burke County and enlisted in Wake County at age 19, September 23, 1862, for the war. Present or accounted for until he died in hospital at Mount Jackson, Virginia, January 16, 1863, of "variola."
YOUNG, PETER, Private -Enlisted in Burke County on May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. Died at Gettysburg on July 8, 1863, of wounds.
YOWE, MONROE, Private -Born in Burke County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 36, May 10, 1861. Present or accounted for until he deserted on November 26, 1862. Returned to duty February 8, 1863. Present or accounted for until he deserted again on June 17, 1863. Returned to duty on September 25, 1864, and was present or accounted for until captured at Hatcher's Run, Virginia, April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 22, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
