Oakwood Cemetery (1889) -- Developed in 1889 as an alternative to the Old Robinson Cemetery, Oakwood Cemetery has a gently rolling terrain and a picturesque system of narrow avenues typical of late nineteenth century designs. Designed by F. A. Grace, the cemetery has a vast majority of the City's earliest leaders and historically prominent citizens buried there.

Richard Beverly, 33rd Regiment,
NC Troops. Appointed Surgeon of this regiment on
October 8, 1861. Transferred (apparently to
conscription duty in North Carolina) on February 12,
1862. "He was an able, conscientious
surgeon." [NCT-9:119] He would serve under the notable, then Lt. Col., Robert Frederick Hoke. Of the 125,000 men his state contributed to the Confederate cause, it was Hoke who was called "the North Carolina Lee" and was "the most distinguished soldier of North Carolina." In a face-to-face meeting after the war, U.S. Grant admitted that Hoke had administered "the worst drubbing I ever got," at Cold Harbor. (Colonel Robert F. Hoke: Lee's Modest Warrior, by Daniel Barefoot) The hospital founded by Dr. Richard B. Baker, which bore his name until a short while ago is 300 yards SW of his grave. |

BERRY, PINKNEY, 1st Lieutenant, Company K, 35th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Burke County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 21, October 15, 1861. Mustered in as Corporal. Present or accounted for during January-April, 1862. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on October 13, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 5, 1863. Reported present during November, 1864-February, 1865. Captured at Five Forks, Virginia, April 1, 1865. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C. Transferred to Johnson's Island, Ohio, April 9, 1865. Released at Johnson's Island on June 18, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [North Carolina pension records indicate he was wounded in the right elbow on June 17, 1863.] (After the battle of New Bern, N. C, upon the death of Lieutenant Hale, Julius E. Link was elected Second Lieut. At the battle of Malvern Hill, July 1st 1862, this gallant young officer was killed. Pinkney Berry was promoted from Sergeant to Second Lieutenant.) [NCT-9:450]
BURNS, WILLIAM PINKNEY, Private, Company A, 22nd Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Caldwell County at age 18, April 30, 1861. Hospitalized at Farmville, Virginia, on or about August 2, 1864, with "total deafness" resulting from "a severe blow upon right side of head with but[t] of gun." Place and date injured not reported. Discharged on September 1, 1864, by reason of "total deafness." [NCT-7:14]
ELLIS, JAMES R., Captain, Company K, 35th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Davidson County and resided in Catawba County where he was by occupation a physician prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 27. Appointed Captain on October 15, 1861. Appointed Surgeon to rank from November 25, 1861, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. [NCT-9:450]
HAWN, GEORGE W., Private, Company E, 32 nd Regiment, NC Troops- Born in Catawba County'* where he resided as a teacher prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 22, August 14, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on May 28, 1862, by reason of "inguinal hernia." Reenlisted in the company on March 31, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3-4, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, on or about July 7, 1863. Paroled at Fort Delaware and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received on August 1, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty in January-October, I864. Present or accounted for through February, 1865. Paroled at Greensboro in April, 1865. [NCT-9:50] Professor George W. Hahn was the author and compiler of The Catawba Soldier in the Civil War, published in 1911.
JOHNSON, JAMES THEODORE, Captain, Company K, 35 th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba* or Burke County and resided in Burke County where he was by occupation a physician prior to enlisting in Burke County at age 24. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant on October 15, 1861. Promoted to Captain on November 28, 1861. Reported present during January-February, 1862, and May, 1862. Wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July 1, 1862. Returned to duty, prior to November 1, 1862. Appointed Major on December 14, 1862, and transferred to the Field and Staff of this regiment. Later served as Colonel of this regiment. [NCT-9:450]
LYERLY, JOHN LAFAYETTE, Corporal, Company K, 4 th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Rowan County and enlisted in Brunswick County at age 27, May 30, 1861, for the war. Mustered in as Corporal. Discharged on or about March 5, 1862, after being elected 2nd Lieutenant in Company B, 42nd Regiment N.C. Troops. [NCT-10:207] LYERLY, JOHN LAFAYETTE, 2nd Lieutenant, 2nd Company B, 42nd Regiment, NC Troops - Previously served as Corporal in Company K, 4th Regiment N.C. State Troops. Elected 2nd Lieutenant of this company on or about March 5, 1862. No further records. [NCT-10:207]
SETZER, JOHN SIDNEY, Private, Company E, 32 nd Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 20, August 14, 1861. Present or accounted for until captured at or near Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia, on or about May 10, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, May 18, 1864. Transferred to Elmira, New York, August 3, 1864. Paroled at Elmira and transferred to the James River, Virginia, February 20, 1865, for exchange. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, March 8, 1865, with debilitas and was furloughed for thirty days on March 9, 1865. [NCT-9:53]
SETZER, MARCUS, Private, Company F, 38 th Regiment, NC Troops Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 30, October 31, 1861. Present or accounted for until transferred to Company A, 12th Regiment N.C. Troops (2nd Regiment N.C. Volunteers), June 10, 1862, in exchange for Private Albert L. Sigman. [NCT-10:65] SETZER, MARCUS, Private, Company A, 12 th Regiment, NC Troops Previously served in Company F, 38th Regiment N.C. Troops. Transferred to this company on June 10, 1862, in exchange for Private Albert L. Sigman. Present or accounted for until wounded in the leg at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865. [NCT-5:126]

Mustered in as Private and was promoted to Corporal on November 25, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on May 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 27, 1862. Returned to duty on or about October 1, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 18, 1865, and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia, where he was received February 20-21, 1865, for exchange. [NCT-7:204]
