St. James Lutheran Church is located in Catawba County, about two miles east of Newton. It appears that this congregation was first started in what was known as the old Haas Church, a log building, which stood one mile South of the present St. James Church. We are reliably informed that in the year 1834 a deed was issued from Lincoln County in the name of David Haas and George A. Ikard for land for this church.The church here was to be available for use by different denominations, so both Lutheran and Reformed groups worshiped here until 1852, when the Reformed members withdrew and built a church of their own in the town of Newton. The Lutherans continued to worship at the old place until after the close of the Civil War. The old log building has now given way, leaving only the graveyard to mark the place.
The change from the old location to the present one occurred about 1867. The old Communion Record Book shows that a communion service was held in the Haas Church September 23, 1866, and that another such service was held May 23, 1867, at St. James Church. The names of the communicants were practically the same in each service. It is known that when the public school opened at the St. James locality in the fall of 1867, the new church was under construction. The land on which this church was built was deeded to the church by M. M. Hewitt.Rev. Polycarp Henkel was the pastor here during the time of relocation and construction of the first frame church.The present concrete block building was put up while Rev. J. Allen Arndt was pastor, and it was dedicated on May 8, 1910 by Pastor W. D. Wise and Rev. W. J. Boger, D.D., then President of the Tennessee Synod. This is a splendid building and churchly in its arrangement.A new Educational Building, two stories and a basement with classrooms, was constructed in 1929, under the pastoral leadership of Dr. W. J. Boger.A new, brick parsonage was built in 1948, soon after the present pastor, Rev. Garth Lee Hill, became pastor.

JOHN MARVIN ARNDT, Private, Company A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right leg at Cold Harbor, Virginia, June 1, 1864. Right leg amputated. Reported absent wounded until discharged on February 3, 1865, by reason of disability.[NCT-5:118]

JOHN CARPENTER, Corporal, Company B, 58th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County and enlisted in Rowan County at age 34, July 4, 1862, for the war. Mustered in as Private. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, September 24, 1862. Returned to duty on October 21, 1862. Reported present through February 28, 1863. Promoted to Corporal in January-February, 1863. Reported present until May 4, 1863, when he was wounded slightly in the hand at Chancellorsville, Virginia. Returned to duty prior to May 11,1863. Reported present until November 7, 1863, when he was captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia. Sent to Washington, D.C. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 24,1865. Received at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, February 25-28 or March 2-3, 1865, for exchange. Survived the war. [NCT-14:113]

J. DAVIDSON CLINE, Private. Served in Company E, 72nd Regiment, NC Troops, a Reserve unit. He was reportedly wounded. Research continues.[M-4:321/P-326]

JOHN AUSTIN HASS, Private, Company C, 28nd Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 21, August 13, 1861 Wounded in the right shoulder at Chancellorsville. Virginia, May 1-3. 1863. Returned to duty on February 12, 1864; however, he was retired to the Invalid Corps on April 8, 1864, by reason of disability.[NCT-8:144]

LOGAN HUIT, Private, Company E, 32nd Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 20, August 14, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded near Warrenton, Virginia, in September-October, 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, where he died on November 5 or November 15, 1863, of wounds.[NCT-9:50]

WILLIAM L. HUIT, Private, Company K, 46th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 21, March 20, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded in the right arm at Wilderness, Virginia, May 5, 1864. Returned to duty in July-August, 1864. Wounded at Reams' Station, Virginia, August 25, 1864. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864.[NCT-11:233]

PINKNEY L. JONES, Private, Company I, 49th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, March 19, 1862. Wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, July l, 1862. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Reported present from November, 1862; through December, 1863, and in March-August, 1864. Captured at Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 21, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.[NCT-12:122]

DANIEL W. MOOSE, Private, Company A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 1-3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until hospitalized at Charlotte on October 28, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the right hand. Place and date wounded not reported. Returned to duty on November 19, 1864, and present or accounted for through December, 1864.[NCT-5:125]

ELCANAH MOOSE, Private, Company A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a carpenter prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 18, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the head at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty prior to July 1, 1863, and present or accounted for until captured near Washington, D. C., July 14, 1864. Confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, until transferred to Elmira, New York, July 23, 1864. Paroled at Elmira on or about February 9, 1865, and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's Wharf, James River, Virginia, where he was received February 20-21, 1865, for exchange. Reported present with a detachment of paroled and exchanged prisoners at Camp Lee, near Richmond, Virginia, February 28, 1865.[NCT-5:125]

GEORGE W. RABB, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 19, April 27, 1861. Present or accounted for until wounded in the leg and groin at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 2, 1863. Returned to duty in September-December, 1863, and present or accounted for until wounded in the leg at Fisher's Hill, Virginia, September 22, 1864. Leg amputated. Company muster rolls dated May 1-December, 1864, indicate that he was a prisoner of war; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report. No further records.[NCT-5:125]

L. Q. SMYRE, Private, Company A, 12th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 37, March 14, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for through December, 1864.[NCT-5:128/P-295]

MARCUS WIKE, Private, Company K, 46th Regiment, NC Troops - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 40, March 16, 1863, for the war. Present or accounted for until November 24, 1863, when he was detailed as a teamster. Reported on duty as a teamster until November 13, 1864, when he rejoined the company. Reported on duty as a harness maker from January 31 through February 23, 1865. Captured near Petersburg, Virginia; April 2, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on June 22, 1865, after taking the Oath Of Allegiance.[NCT-11:239]

JOSEPH WITHERSPOON, Private, Company E, 57th Regiment, NC Troops - Born in Catawba County on October 1, 1843. Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 18, July 4, 1862, for the war. Reported present or accounted for through October 31, 1863. Captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, November 7, 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on or about December 24, 1863. Received at City Point, Virginia, December 28, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty prior to May 1, 1864. Sent to hospital sick on July 16, 1864. Returned to duty in September-October, 1864. Reported present through February 28, 1865. Captured at Fort Stedman, Virginia, March 25, 1865. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland on March 28, 1865. Released at Point Lookout on June 22, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance.[NCT-14:159]
