During the Winter of 1861-1862, most area volunteers were camped near Goldsboro, with some movement through that region. By Spring of 1862, the cruel reality of war descended on the congregation. Among the first of the many fallen sons of St. John's was Gilbert Sigmon, who died of pneumonia or typhoid fever in a Manassas, Virginia hospital. His funeral service was held in February. This was soon followed by grief for the David and Susan Cline family, whose son Laban succumbed to typhoid fever at the camp near Weldon, North Carolina. Oath of Allegiance. [NCT-5:126] Noah Isaiah Rowe, who was born near Newton, N. C., January 20, 1828, enlisted as a member of Company A, 12th N. C. Regiment, in April, 1861. On May 3, 1863, he was wounded in the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was taken prisoner on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House and confined at West Point three months when he was removed to the Federal Prison at Elmira, N.Y. At this place he was confined until the close of the war. Beginning empty-handed at the close of the war, by untiring toil he has acquired a competency, has brought up a large family, and is an honored citizen in the community. For many years he has been an elder in the Reformed Church, and is still an active church worker. At this time (1911) he is still in active life and is possessed of excellent health, considering his years and labors. He is now in his 84th year. Reported present through October 31, 1863. Captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, November 7, 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on or about October 31, 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Georgia, November 15, 1864, for exchange. Reported absent sick on December 2, 1864. 1864. [NCT-11:126] Noah Treffenstedt's funeral was preached at St. John's church by Rev. P.C. Henkle [Thurs. before 3rd Sun (17) July 1862 funeral for Noah Treffelstadt Psa. 39:4] --Notes of Rev. P.C. Henkel. Noah Traffelstadt, who was fatally wounded at Malvern Hill, Virginia, returned home and died from these injuries on July 16....(no cemetery marker) [From Lifting High the Cross...For 200 Years, Mark Smith, pg. 196.] His grave remains unmarked. |

Company muster rolls dated May-December, 1863, indicate that he was captured on July 1, 1863; however, records of the Federal Provost Marshal do not substantiate that report. Company muster roll dated January-February, 1864, indicates he was absent on furlough. Returned to duty in March-April, 1864, and present or accounted for until hospitalized at Charlottesville, Virginia, June 16, 1864, with "debilitas." Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 30. Appointed 1st Lieutenant on July 4, 1862. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, on or about September 22, 1862, with measles. Transferred to Salisbury on October 7, 1862. Dropped from the company rolls on or about December 3, 1862, for prolonged absence without leave. Reinstated on January 7, 1863. Resigned on February 11, 1863, by reason of "phthisis." Mustered in as 1st Sergeant and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant to rank from September 16, 1861. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 5, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded and captured at or near Sharpsburg, Maryland, on or about September 17, 1862. Confined at Fort McHenry, Maryland, and at Fort Monroe, Virginia, until received at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia; October 19, 1862, for exchange. Declared exchanged at Aiken's Landing on November 10, 1862. Present or accounted for until hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, February 17, 1864, with a gunshot wound of the left side; however, place and date wounded not reported.
