The church which was known as Startown First Baptist Church began in the 19th century as the Startown Methodist Episcopal Church. The Baptist Church recently built a new facility on Sigmon Dairy Road, in Newton, and sold their church building and grounds to the Jenkins Funeral Home which continues to maintain the buildings and the cemetery. Mr. Carl Jenkins, President of Jenkins Funeral Home, has done a marvelous job in preserving the building and cemetery. He provided a great deal of help in creating this web page and has wholeheartedly supported our efforts to memorialize those who deserve honor for defending the honor of the country they called their own.

HUFFMAN, LEVI MAXWELL E., Private, 57th Regiment, Company E, NC Troops -Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a day laborer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 25, July 4, 1862, for the war. Reported present or accounted for through February 28, 1863. Wounded in the left shoulder at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 4.1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia. Returned to duty on or about April 7, 1864. Sent to hospital sick on May 8, 1864. Reported absent in hospital through February 28, 1865. Survived the war.[NCT-14:153]

KILLIAN, WILLIAM L., 1st Sergeant, Company - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted on June 6, 1861. Mustered in as Private and was promoted to 1st Sergeant in May, 1862-February, 1863. Present or accounted for until captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland, October 15-18, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 18, 1865, and transferred to Boulware's and Cox's Wharves, James River, Virginia, where he was received February 20-21, 1865, for exchange. [NCT-7:200]

SMITH, JOHN S., Private - Born in Lincoln County and resided in Catawba County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cleveland County at age 35, May 10, 1862, for the war. Discharged on May 28, 1862, by reason of being overage. Reenlisted in the company on June 23, 1862, as a substitute for C. C. Atwater. Wounded in the hand at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, July 14, 1863, with chronic diarrhoea. Transferred to hospital at Danville, Virginia, July 24, 1863. Returned to duty on an unspecified date. Wounded at Wilderness, Virginia, May 5, 1864. Hospitalized at Charlotte on June 2, 1864. Returned to duty on July 12, 1864. Reported present in September-October, 1864. Survived the war. STARR, SYLVANUS MARION, Private - Resided in Catawba County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 34, July 4, 1862, for the war. Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia, November 9, 1862, with vertigo. Transferred to hospital at Farmville, Virginia, December 20, 1862 (suffering from disease of the liver). Returned to duty on January 3, 1863. Captured at Chancellorsville, Virginia, May 3, 1863. Confined at Fort Delaware, Delaware, on or about May 7, 1863, Paroled at Fort Delaware and transferred to City Point, Virginia, where he was received on May 23, 1863, for exchange. Returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Captured at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, November 7, 1863. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, November 11, 1863. Paroled at Point Lookout on February 24, 1865. Received at Aiken's Landing, James River, Virginia, February 25-28 or March 2-3, 1865, for exchange. Survived the war.

THRONEBURG, MARCUS AUGUSTUS, 1st Lieutenant - Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted on August 13, 1861. Mustered in as 1st Sergeant and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on February 27, 1862. Captured at Hanover Court House, Virginia, May 27, 1862. Confined at Fort Monroe, Virginia, and at Fort Columbus, New York Harbor. Transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, June 21, 1862. Exchanged on July 10, 1862. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on or about July 15, 1862. Wounded in the head and/or left hip at Reams' Station, Virginia, August 25, 1864. Reported absent wounded through December, 1864. Reported present but sick in January-February, 1865. [NCT-8:140]

WILSON, AUSTIN Sylvanus, Private - Born in Catawba County* where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Catawba County at age 23, August t4, 1861. Present or accounted for until discharged on June 9, 1862, by reason of " chronic rheumatism." [NCT-9:54]

On July 8th, 2006, a memorial ceremony will be held at the Jenkins/Startown Cemetery recognizing seven Confederate soldiers who died in battle or as a result of war wounds.. Their final remains were either neglected and forgotten or buried either in unmarked and mass graves. We invite the public to join us in this memorable ceremony. These fallen heros are featured on a pre-dedication web site.
