1st REGIMENT N.C. INFANTRY

Authorized by General A. E. Burnside May, 1862. Organized June 27, 1862. Mustered in for three years, with ten companies, A to I, and L. Appears as 1st N.C. Vols, 1st N.C. Union Vols, 1st N. C. Inf., 1st N.C. Union Inf., 1st N.C. Inf. (White). Mustered out June 27, 1865, at New Bern.

  • Company A- Mustered in June 27, 1862, at Washington, N.C.
        Appears as 1st Lt. James M. Hervey's Co., 1st N.C. Vols.
    Company B- Mustered in June 27, 1862, at Washington, N.C.
        Appears as Lt. Charles A. Lyon's Co., 1st N.C. Vols.
    Company C- Mustered in June 16-20, 1862, at Plymouth.
    Company D- Mustered in August 10-Sept. 20, 1862, at Washington, N.C.
    Company E- No muster in date.
    Company F- Mustered in August 26-September 25, 1862, at Beaufort.
    Company G- Mustered in October 4-December 29, 1862, at New Bern.
    Company H- Mustered in May 6, 1863, at Hatteras Inlet.
        Appears as Captain Charles C. Graves' Co., 1st N. C. Artillery.
    Company I- Mustered in January 21, 1863, at Hatteras Banks.
    Company L- Mustered in June 20, 1863, at Plymouth.
        Appears as 1st Lt. George W. Graham's Co. of Cavalry, 1st N.C. Vols.
  • 2nd REGIMENT N.C. INFANTRY

    Organized at New Bern November, 1863. Consisted of five companies, A to F, excluding D. Appears as 2nd N.C. Union Inf., 2nd Inf. N.C. Union Vols. Consolidated with 1st N.C. Inf. by Special Order No. 27, AGO, January 1865. Mustered out June 27, 1865 at New Bern.

  • Company A- Mustered in from Nov. 10, 1863, to Jan. 27, 1864, at New Bern.
    Company B- Mustered in from Nov. 7, 1863, to Jan. 25, 1864, at New Bern.
    Company C- Mustered in from Nov. 27, 1863, to Feb. 26, 1864, at New Bern.
    Company E- Mustered in from Nov. 7, 1863, to Feb. 29, 1864, at New Bern.
    Company F- Mustered in from Nov. 11, 1863, to Jan. 21, 1864, at New Bern.
  • 2nd REGIMENT N.C. MOUNTED INFANTRY
    2nd N.C. CAVALRY

    Organized at Knoxville, Tenn., October, 1863. Consisted of seven companies, A to H, excluding G. Mustered out August 16, 1865, at Knoxville.

  • Companies A,B,C,F, and H were mustered in on October 6, 1863. Company E on October 10 and Company D on December 9, 1863. All the companies were organized at Knoxville except D,F, and H, which were organized at Walker's Ford, Tenn.
    Company E was (old) Co. I, 8th Regiment Tenn. Cavalry.

    Organized at Knoxville, Tenn., June, 1864. service, and consisted of ten companies, A to K. at Knoxville. Mustered in for three years Mustered out Aug. 8, 1865,

    Company B- Muster in from June 14 to Oct. 14, 1864, at Bull's Gap and
        Knoxville.
    Company C- Mustered in from May 11 to Oct. 27, 1864, at Bull's Gap and
        Knoxville.
    Company D- Mustered in from June 11 to Oct 14, 1864, at Bull's Gap and
        Knoxville.
    Company E- Mustered in from Aug. l0 to Oct 14, 1864, at Bull's Gap and
        Knoxville.
    Company F- Mustered in from June 11, 1864 to Oct 26, 1864, at Bull's Gap
        and Knoxville.
    Company G- Mustered in from June 11, 1864, to Feb. 16, 1865, at Bull's Gap
        and Knoxville.
    Company H- Mustered in Feb 16, 1865, at Knoxville.
    Company I- Mustered in Mar. 6-16, 1865, at Knoxville.
    Company K- Mustered in May 13-16, 1865, at Knoxville.
  • GOLDMAN BRYSON'S MOUNTED COMPANY

    National Guards, 1st Regiment, Company A

    This company, composed of men from Cherokee County, N.C., and Monroe County, Tenn., has never been officially recognized as a military unit in the service of the United States. Although a claim was made that they were mustered int. service September 29, 1863, the claim was declared invalid. On November 3, 1863, the company was routed, never to again unite as a company. Some of the men, sympathetic to the Union cause, enlisted in various regiments, some went home, while others turned to guerrilla activities.

    1st REGIMENT HEAVY ARTILLERY (African Descent)
    14th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery

    Organized at New Bern and Morehead City, N.C. March, 1864. Companies mustered in from Feb 4 1864 through April 30, 1865. Designation changed to 14th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery March 17, 1865.. Mustered out Dec. 11, 1865, at Fort Macon.

  • Company A- Mustered in at New Bern, March 14, 1864.
    Company B- Mustered in at New Bern, April 22, 1864.
    Company C- Mustered in at New Bern from Feb 28 through May 20, 1864.
    Company D- Muster in date and place not known.
    Company E- Mustered in at New Bern and other places from March 26,
        1864, through Feb. 21, 1865.
    Company F- Mustered in from May 14, 1864, through April 30, 1865.
    Company G- Mustered in from Feb. 17 through April 22, 1865.
    Company H- Mustered in at New Bern and Morehead City from Feb. 13
        through April 30, 1865.
    Company I- Mustered in at New Bern and Morehead City from Feb. 4,
        through April 28, 1865.
    Company K- Mustered in at Morehead City from March 23 through April 13, 1865.
    Company L- Mustered in at Morehead City from March 28 through Apr. 24,
        1865.
    Company M- N. muster in date. Most of the men of this Co. were trans-
        ferred from companies B, C, and D of this regiment April 30, 1864.
  • 1st REGIMENT INFANTRY (African Descent)
    1st Regiment N.C. Colored Infantry
    35th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops

    Organized at New Bern and Portsmouth, Va., June 30, 1863. Mustered in from June 30-July 30, 1863, for three years. Designation of regiment changed to 35th U.S. Colored Troops February 8, 1864. Mustered out June l, 1866, at Charleston, S.C.

  • Companies A to I were mustered in on June,30, 1863.
    Company K was mustered in July 30, 1863.
  • 2nd REGIMENT INFANTRY (African Descent)
    2nd Regiment N.C. Colored Infantry
    36th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops

    Organized at Portsmouth, Va., October 28, 1863. Mustered in for three years from October 28, 1863, through January 25, 1864, at Portsmouth and Norfolk, Va. Designation of regiment changed to 36th U.S. Colored Troops, February 8, 1864. Mustered out at Brazos, Texas, October 28, 1866.

  • Companies A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I, and K were mustered in on October 28, 1863, at Portsmouth, Va. Company H was mustered in at Norfolk, Va., on January 25, 1864.
  • 3rd REGIMENT INFANTRY (African Descent)
    3rd Regiment N.C. Colored Infantry
    37th Regiment U.S. Colored Troops

    Organized at Norfolk, Va., January 30, 1864. Mustered in on same date for three years. Designation of regiment changed to 37th U.S. Colored Troops, February 8, 1864. Mustered out February 11, 1867, at Raleigh.

  • Company A also. known as Captain Nitzsche's Co. 3rd N.C. Colored
        Infantry.
    Company C also. known as Captain Washburn's Co., 3rd N.C. Colored
        Infantry.
  • 135th-REGIMENT U.S. COLORED TROOPS

    This regiment was mustered in at Page Station, N.C., March 28, 1865, for three years service. The regiment contained men from every Southern State east of the Mississippi River and is carried as a North Carolina Regiment because it was organized in the State. Mustered out October 23, 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky.
