Downtown Conover, looking NE on 1st Avenue (circa 1910)

The dirt streets have since been paved and landmarks are difficult to place.
At the far left would be the Knox Smith home, then the Ed Herman store (later the Stone Savings Bank).
Beyond that was the Yount Grocery Co. (presently, Bowman Drug Store).

Preston Baker worked well into the night cutting the hair of Conover men.
In the 1940's, when this picture was taken, his barber shop was across the street from A-Jewels.
