Col. Kenneth M. Murchison, a North Carolina millionaire and a gallant Confederate soldier, died suddenly of heart disease
Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Carter, 15 West Preston Street. The remains were taken to Colonel Murchison's late home,
in Wilmington yesterday for interment today. Mrs. Carter accompanied the body.
Colonel Murchison was visiting Mrs. Carter at the time of his death, having come here from Fredericksburg, Va., where he spent a few
days with another daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Hurkamp. He was 73 years old and a native of Cumberland County, North Carolina. At the outbreak
of the Civil War he was elected captain of Company C. 54th North Carolina Infantry, and rose rapidly by promotion. In the desperate charge
of the regiment, with other commands, to recapture Marye's Hill, Fredericksburg, from Sedgwick's corps, Colonel McDowell, of the 54th Regiment
was killed, and Col. Murchison succeeded to the command.
After the close of the war Colonel Murchison went to New York and engaged in business, in which he was remarkably successful. He was the
founder of the Murchison National Bank, owner of the Orton Hotel, Wilmington, and also of the Orton Plantation on the Cape Fear River.
Col. Murchison is survived by a widow, four daughters and a son. The daughters are Mrs. Shirley Carter of Baltimore, Mrs. Charles H. Hurkamp,
of Fredericksburg; Mrs. Frank S. Ellis of Atlanta, and Mrs. James Sprunt of Wilmington. His son is Mr. Kenneth Murchison of New York.

Gloom Cast Over Wilmington - The Deceased Interested In Many Commercial Ventures and Owner of Valuable Properties
Funeral Will Be Held Monday Afternoon.
Special to The Observer.
Wilmington, June 4.- A gloom was cast over the entire community this morning by the announcement from Baltimore that Col. Kenneth McKenzie
Murchison had died suddenly there at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Shirley Carter. Col. Murchison was prominently identified with the business
interests of Wilmington, being the founder of the Murchison National Bank, owner of the Orton Hotel, senior member of the firm of Murchison & Co.,
naval store dealers; a member of the Cole Cement and Supply Company, and owner of the fine Orton rice plantation down the Cape Fear River. Only
a few days ago he left Wilmington in apparent good health for New York, intending to stop only a few days at the home of his daughter, where he died.
Col. Murchison was born in February, 1831, at Manchester, near Fayetteville. He graduated at the State University in early life, and came to
Wilmington, where he remained a short time, engaging in business in New York in 1858. In the spring of 1861 he returned South and joined the
Confederate army, serving as a colonel in Hoke's brigade, with distinguished but unostentatious bravery. After the war Col. Murchison returned
to New York and resumed business. A few years ago, having amassed great wealth he retired from active business life, and had spent most of his
time in the free environment of his fine plantation on the Cape Fear.
Col. Murchison married Miss Kate Williams, daughter of the late Joel Williams, of Cumberland, and she, with the following sons and daughters,
survive him: K.M. Murchison, Jr., of New York; Mrs. James Sprunt of Wilmington; Mrs. Frank S. Ellis of Atlanta; Mrs. Shirley Carter of Baltimore,
and Mrs. Charles H. Hurkamp, of Fredericksburg, Va.
The remains of Col. Murchison will arrive here Monday morning, and the funeral will be conducted from the residence of Mr. Sprunt in the afternoon.
The body will be laid to rest in the handsome Murchison mauseoleum, in Oakdale Cemetery.
