Thomas Cleveland Hales was the son of Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Hales and his first wife Lucy Cashwell. 
Jeff was born in 1848 in Cumberland Co. and died in 1936 in Cumberland Co. Jeff and Lucy were married April 11, 1871 
in Cumberland Co. Lucy was born in 1851 and died in 1905 in Cumberland Co. Jeff's second wife was Sally Cashwell, 
younger sister of Lucy Cashwell. Other children of Jeff and Lucy: Emma Hales Bullard (wife of George Franklin Bullard), 
Frank Hales and Ellen Hales.

Thomas Jefferson "Jeff" Hales was the son of William "Billy" Hales, who was born abt. 1803 and 
died abt. 1879, and his first wife Abigail Jones, daughter of Levi Jones, who was born April 15, 1807 and died May 
17, 1852 in Cumberland Co. Billy's second wife was Mary Jane "Polly" Faircloth who was born November 26, 
1803 and died May 6, 1878. Other children of Billy and first wife Abigail were: Ollen, Lucy, Simon and Giles.
