Andy RAFALEOWSKI

GRANDY
Andy RAFALEOWSKI, 78, of Grandy, died Friday, October 6 in Glen Falls, N.Y. He was a native of Wyandotte, Michigan and the husband of Betty RAFALEOWSKI. He was a dredge boat captain and a superintendent for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company of Chicago, Illinois. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #393 of Waddington, N.Y. and a Shriner, member of the Merchant Marines, American Legion Post #0288 of Coinjock, Ruritan Club of Grandy, and past president of Beavers Ambassador Club. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Beverly SULLIVAN of Greenville; a son, Michael John RAFALEOWSKI of Tampa, Fla.; 5 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were to be conducted at Mr. Zion Methodist Church in Grandy at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 by the Rev. Lindy JONES. Twiford's Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City is in charge. Stephen Paul RAINWATER

JARVISBURG - Steven Paul RAINWATER, 42, of Jarvisburg, NC, died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, in the Pitt Memorial Hospital. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and was a self-employed roofer. Mr. RAINWATER was the son of Paul Lee RAINWATER of Scottsville, Kentucky and the late Glenda Kaye Burton RAINWATER. He was a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ. Besides his father, Mr. RAINWATER is survived by four sons, Christopher Lee RAINWATER, Daniel Paul RAINWATER, Steven Ryan RAINWATER, and Shawn James RAINWATER all of Jarvisburg, NC; two sisters, Paige Denise EVANS and Michelle Lea STONE both of Jarvisburg, NC. He is also survived by his fiancé, Victoria Louise GRAY of Jarvisburg, NC.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 30, 2004, at 11:00am in the Jarvisburg Church of Christ by Minister Dennis CREHAN. There will be another funeral service in Somerset, Kentucky on January 2, 2005 with burial to follow in the Piney Grove Cemetery in Nancy, Kentucky. Twiford Funeral Home, 405 E. Steven Ryan RAINWATER

The family of Steven Ryan RAINWATER is heartbroken to announce his untimely passing at the age of 27 on May 14, 2021 in Nags Head.  Steven's family has arranged his viewing for Monday May 24, 2021 from 4 PM to 6 PM at Gallop Memorial Chapel in Barco.  The funeral will be held at Powell's Point Christian Church at 1pm, May 25, 2021 with Pastor Jerry Owens officiating. Immediately following the funeral, Steven will be buried at Memorial Gardens in Poplar Branch, North Carolina.  A full obituary is pending. Alice Frances Tully RAMSEY

BARCO Alice Frances Tully RAMSEY, 91, of Barco, died August 22 in Albemarle Hospital. She was formally of Kill Devil Hills. She was a resident of Sentara Nursing Home since 1987. She was a native of the Back Bay area of Boston, Mass and a retired hotel manager. She was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Boston, Mass. Mrs. RAMSEY was the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie Brady TULLY and the widow of Willard Hilston RAMSEY. Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy L. WELCH of Elkton, Va.; one son, Harold Francis RAMSEY of Sebring, Fla.; one sister, Mary MORROW of Barco; and one brother, John TULLY [rest of obit cut off] (The Coastland Times – Thursday, August 26, 1993; pg. 8A)

Noah Matthew RANDALL

POWELLS POINT - Infant boy, Noah Matthew RANDALL, of 7934 Caratoke Hwy., Powells Point, NC, died Friday, October 13, 2006 at The Outer Banks Hospital. He was born in Norfolk, VA, on September 5, 2006.  Noah is survived by his parents, Memory A. BERRY and LaMont M. RANDALL of Powells Point, NC; a brother, Isaiah RANDALL of Powells Point, NC; maternal grandparents, Ray and Cindy BERRY of Grandy, NC; paternal grandparents, James and Joyce LEARY of Rocky Mount, NC; and several aunts and uncles.  A graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 17, 2006 at 2:00 at Laurel Memorial Gardens with Minister Dennis CREHAN officiating. The family will be at the residence of the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray BERRY, 121 Barefoot Lane, Grandy, NC. Bonnie Sue RANK
 
GRANDY - Bonnie Sue RANK, 42, died Wednesday, February 19 at her residence. Miss RANK, a native of Bethesda, Md., was the daughter of William RANK of the residence and the late Flora Quick RANK. A graduate of East Carolina University, she was formerly a social worker in Delaware and Currituck and presently was a secretary for the maintenance department of the Dare County Board of Education in Manteo. She was involved, enjoyed and active in many sports and a member of Goose Creek Golf Club. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church By-the-Sea in Nags Head. Besides her father, she is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Ann RANK of Raleigh; three brothers: William C. RANK and wife Chris of Hopatcong, N.J., Robert P. RANK of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and Bradley J. RANK and wife Sharon of Rhoadesville, Va. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 23 at Grace Lutheran Church By-the-Sea with the Rev. Mildred Inez RANSONE

VIRGINIA BEACH - Mildred Inez RANSONE, 84, passed away Monday, June 29, 2015. She was born in North Carolina to the late James E. PARKER and Dorcas GARRENTON. She is also predeceased by husband Julian Cabell RANSONE, daughter Linda HERRMANN, son-in-law Larry FORD, step-son J. Lee RANSONE, granddaughter Helen RANSONE, sisters Martha MORRISETTE and Hazel MATHEWS, and brothers Melvin PARKER and Claude PARKER.  Left to cherish her memory is her daughter Carol FORD, sons Michael FOSTER, Thomas FOSTER and wife Belinda, granddaughters, Jill and Cindy FORD, great-grandchildren, Cortney, Connery and Ashlee MARSH, Alexus and Tristen CUTHBERT, and Timothy and Sara HAWTHORNE. Mildred had a big heart, loved her family dearly and always cared for everyone she met. She truly enjoyed taking care of others, and adored her cats. She was a long-term member of Kempsville Christian Church.  A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 11AM at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, 5792 Greenwich Rd., Virginia Beach. Roy Gearhart RAST

POPLAR BRANCH - Roy Gearhart RAST, 67, died Saturday, January 4, in the Brian Center. He was born in Yacolt, Washington. Mr. RAST was retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service and formerly worked at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal worker. He was a Baptist. He is survived by his wife, Sarah Ledbetter RAST of the home; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 3 p.m. in the Twiford Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City. Sarah Ledbetter RAST

Sarah Ledbetter RAST, 91, of Poplar Branch, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 at her residence. Born in Edgecombe County, she was the daughter of the late John H. LEDBETTER and the late Annie Ballance Parker LEDBETTER and was the wife of the late Roy G. RAST. Ms. RAST was a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. Ms. Rast is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth A. REECE and husband, Fred, of Hudson, and Annie M. FOX of Wilmington; a sister, Daisy L. LADER of Chesapeake, Va.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will take place on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Poplar Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Junior Dale RATLIFF

Junior Dale RATLIFF, 16 of 188 James Way, Jarvisburg, NC died Monday, June 27, 2016. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC on August 10, 1999. A student at Currituck High School, he was very mechanically inclined, loved taking things apart and putting them back together. Junior loved playing the game, Magic with family and friends.  In addition to his father, Scott RATLIFF, he is survived by his step-mother, Amanda RATLIFF; five sisters, Holly, Tiffani, Samantha, Krista, and Natalie; a brother, Scott, Jr; grandparents, John and Aleta RATLIFF; and a host of extended family. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a grandmother, Virginia HEWITT.  A memorial service will be held Friday, July 8, 2016. at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with Rev. F. Marie Barrett RAY

Marie Barrett RAY, a native of Moyock, died Jan. 26, 1991, in her home.  Mrs. RAY retired as a nurse from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 20 years and was formerly employed with Norfolk Community Hospital. She was the widow of Lawrence RAY.  Survivors include two daughters, Jean WORD of Capitol Heights and Ester FULTON of Fort Washington; a son, Maurice RAY of Suitland; a step-son, Tommy BAKER of Fort Washington; two sisters, Lillian BENNETT and Hattie WILLIAMS, both of Norfolk; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at noon Saturday in Evergreen Baptist Church. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery in Landover. Henry Washington & Son Funeral Home, Washington, D.C., is handling arrangements. Andrew Eugene REDMOND

Andrew Eugene REDMOND, 89 of 106 Canadian Goose Drive, Currituck, NC died Friday, November 28, 2014 at his residence. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late James W. REDMOND and Agnes Cecelia Westerfield REDMOND. He was a retired salesman for Campbell Auto Parts, a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, and Baptist and enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Williams REDMOND of the residence; and a brother, Ernest H. REDMOND of Scotland, MD.  A funeral service will be Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Rehoboth Baptist Church with the Rev. Frank THIGPEN, the Rev. F. Joe GRIFFITH, and the Rev. Deborah POOLE with military honors. Burial will be in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the residence. Dorothy Williams REDMOND

Dorothy Williams REDMOND, age 97, died Saturday, January 2, 2021 at Currituck Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Jarratt, VA on February 1, 1923 to the late William Alonzo WILLIAMS and Lucy Ella Jones WILLIAMS, she was the widow of Andrew E. REDMOND. Mrs. REDMOND was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church where she was a Bible teacher and involved with Christian activities until her health impeded her. She was a retired bookkeeper for Drug Fair, Inc.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings.  Here are some very special memories to her that she wrote down to share:
When she received Christ as her savior at 8 years old;
When she and her husband, Andy were married February 19, 1949;
When it was her privilege to lead her Dad to the Lord in January 1952 when he was age 68;
The day her Dad went to be with the Lord on April 11, 1961 his last words were “ It’s wonderful, it’s wonderful, it’s wonderful!”

She also wrote in her memories: “It is so wonderful to reflect on the Lord Jesus Christ and how good He has been to me all these years. He has remained faithful and I know His word is true.”  A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Moyock Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Wilhelmina REGAN

KNOTTS ISLAND - Wilhelmina "Wilma" REGAN, 80, passed away Jan. 19, 2011 in her home. She was born in Philadelphia and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry REGAN. She was a retired telephone operator. She was a member of Charity United Methodist Church and Order of Sons of Italy, Roma Lodge No. 254 She is survived by four daughters, Patti MONTES and Holly, Laura BELTZ and husband Jim, Rose ADAMS, Susan THOMAS and Richard; nine grandchildren, Crystal, Wayne, Katy, Misty, Dan, Tricia, Carey, Christopher and Amber; five great-grandchildren, Clayton, Tori, Cayla, Abigail and Madison; seven brothers and sisters; and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, with the Rev. Robert ROBERTSON officiating. Blanche Grimstead Young REICHA

Blanche G. Young Reicha, age 96, passed away on January 31, 2018. She was born and raised on Knotts Island, NC.  She was the daughter of Charles and Ella Grimstead.  She is preceded in death by grandchildren, Lisa and Michael.  Blanche is survived by a daughter Eloise Tucker, and a grandson Wil Styron.  There will be a graveside service in Forest Lawn Cemetery; Norfolk on February 5, 2018 at 1 p.m. Altmeyer Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements.  (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Lemuel REID

KNOTTS ISLAND - Lemuel REID, 96, of the 100 block of W. Gibbs Road, died March 13, 2006. Born in Gibbs, N.C., he was the widow of Mary C. REID. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 39 years of service and was a member of New Oak Grove Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl BINGHAM of Norfolk; three sisters, Leliah HOLLOMAN, Esther HINES and Ruth FOREMAN, all of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, DeSean BINGHAM and Bria BINGHAM; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by four brothers, two sisters, three sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law. A funeral will be held Friday at noon in New Oak Grove Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Tyrone JOHNSON and the Rev. Samuel K. SHAW, eulogist. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Pearl Lindsey REID

Pearl Lindsey REID, 65, of Fisher Landing Road, died July 29, 1992, in her home.  Mrs. REID was born in Jarvisburg. She was a member of Macedonia Disciples Church of Christ, Poplar Branch, and Order of Eastern Star 150. She was president of Loving Charity Lodge.  Survivors include two nieces and a nephew.  The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in Macedonia Disciples Church of Christ by Bishop O.T. NIXON. Willie Alphonso REID

CHESAPEAKE, VA. Willie Alphonso REID, died Tuesday, January 15, 1991 in his home. A native of Currituck County, North Carolina and retired from Texaco, he was a member of New Oak Grove Baptist Church in Virginia Beach. Survivors include his wife, Henrietta REID; a son, John T. REID of Chesapeake; four sisters: Esther HINES, Lillian HOLLOMAN, Ruth FOREMAN and Miriah GREGORY, all of Virginia Beach; two brothers: Elijah REID and Lemuel REID, both of Norfolk; 10 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 20, 1991 in New Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. O.L. CROMWELL, II. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Iris Barco RESNICK

Iris Barco RESNICK of Chespeake, VA died on September 25, 2024 following a long illness. She was born November 17, 1944 in Elizabeth City, NC to the late Ralph and Norma BARCO.  Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 45 years, Dr. Robert RESNICK, two children, David BALLANCE of San Jose, CA, Deborah KIPP (Richard) of Lynchburg, VA, two step-children, Tracy HAYES (Gordon) of Burlington, VT, Scott RESNICK (Lori) of Spring Lake, NC, and five grandchildren, Kiteara, Brenden, Alexis, Miranda and Josh. She is also survived by her sister Barbara HART and her brother, Randy BARCO as well as niece Pam HART and nephews Michael HART and Benjamin BARCO. In addition, coming from very large families on both sides, she leaves many loving cousins and their children. They were a great source of joy and comfort during her lifetime.  Professionally, Iris graduated from Broome Community College where she was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, Randolph Macon Women’s College (summa cum laude) with a BA degree in art history and Lynchburg College with a Masters degree in family counseling and was a member of the Chi Sigma Iota international counseling honors society.  Besides her interest in art and counseling, Iris pursued many interests. She held a GIA certificate in gemology, a real estate license, an Opticianry license and an Associates degree in Business Administration from SUNY Albany.  Even more than these professional interests, she loved her family and friends, playing bridge, reading and traveling.  Funeral arrangements are being made by Altmeyer Funeral Home. There will be a gathering of friends and family at the Virginia Beach Altmeyer, 5033 Rouse Dr., Virginia Beach from 1-4 on October 7, 2024. A memorial service will be held at a later date when she is interred at Arlington National Cemetery.  (Altmeyer Funeral Home)

Michael Lee RETHFORD

Michael Lee “Mike” Rethford, 76, of 1395 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, NC, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023 in Windsor Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.  Mr. Rethford was born in Mercer County, WV on February 9, 1947, and was the son of the late George Lee Rethford and Katie Louise Phelps Rethford Sutton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, George Gary Rethford, and by his step-father, Sammie Bertram Sutton.  A retired Network Technician from Sprint, many remember him as the owner and operator of Mike’s Produce which he ran from his home on Harvey Point Road. A former member of the Currituck Ruritan Club where he had served as its Vice President and was a Past President, he was honored to have also served as the Zone Governor of the Albemarle District of Ruritans. Other membership enjoyed included being a past member of the Bethel Masonic Lodge #589 in Bethel, NC. He was an Army veteran.  Surviving is his wife of 11 years, Carlette Williams Rethford; a daughter, Stephanie Collie (Carl); two step-sons, Nicholas Maher (Christina) and Scott Maher (Kendra); six grandchildren, Thane Collie, and Malakai, Mykah, Nicole, Skylar, and Luna Marie Maher; and two half-sisters, Theresa Dozier and Lisa Lance.   A gathering and time of visitation will be held Thursday, September 14, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Chapel, 1125 Harvey Point Road, Hertford, and other times at the residence. In recognition of his military service, Army honors will be accorded at the end of the gathering at 7:30 p.m.  The family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Windsor Rehabilitation and Healthcare for the love and excellent care provided during their time of need.  (Miller & Van Essendelft Funeral Home)

Shirley Ann Lewis RETHFORD

IN MAPLE - Mrs. Shirley Ann Lewis RETHFORD, age 45, died Saturday night [Sept. 17, 1983] at 8:00 p.m. in Norfolk General Hospital after a two year illness.  She was a native of Princess Ann County, Va. and had lived in Currituck County for 16 years.  She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church.  Funeral services were Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel by Rev. Douglas ALLEN.  Burial followed in the Snowden Cemetery in Maple.  She was the daughter of Mrs. Bernice Nash DILLION of Chesapeake, Va. and Delbert H. LEWIS of Accomack County, Va., and the wife of George L. RETHFORD of the home.  Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by two daughters: Theresa and Lisa RETHFORD of the home; one son, Albert WARD of Chesapeake, Va.; one step-son, Michael RETHFORD of Maple.  (The Southern Post - September 21, 1983; pg. 11)

Marcia Aydlett REYNOLDS

Marcia A. Reynolds, 68, of Coinjock, NC peacefully completed her climb on the stairway to Heaven, February 23, 2023 surrounded by her loving family. Marcia was born on July 28, 1954 to the late Ralph and Leanora Aydlett.  In her teenage years, Marcia helped run the family business, Aydlett’s Grocery, worked at Sentara Nursing Center for a number of years and later was self-employed in the residential cleaning business.  Marcia had an infectious smile that would light up a room, and loved to help others when she was able. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas time, and she couldn’t wait to put up and decorate her tree with ornaments she collected through the years. She enjoyed many shopping trips with her family, however no trip was complete without a visit to Chic-Fil-A. Overall, her favorite place to be was at home, watching Hallmark movies, searching the internet, and loved to do word search puzzles.  Marcia is survived by her two children, Kevin and Amy Shinn; siblings, Linda Rowe, Lisa Conner, Ralph Aydlett, Ill (Shirley), Karen McMurray (Steve), and Leslie Aydlett (Steven), along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.  Marcia’s wishes were to be cremated, and a private family gathering will be held to celebrate her life at a later date. Obie Daniel REYNOLDS, Jr.

Obie Daniel REYNOLDS, JR., 88, of 663 Sandy Hook Road, Shawboro, NC died after a long illness Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at the Albemarle Hospital.  Mr. REYNOLDS, a native of Roanoke, VA was the son of the late Obie Daniel REYNOLDS, SR. and Ivor Bray REYNOLDS. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Evelyn Smithson REYNOLDS of the residence.  He was a retired truck driver from Texaco Oil Company. He was a US Coast Guard Veteran of WW II and saw action in the North and South Pacific.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and Hall Masonic Lodge # 53.  Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Ivor Christine Reynolds GABLER and husband Ron of Grandpas Ridge, TN; two sons, Obie D. REYNOLDS and wife Darlene of Warner Robins, GA and Gary W. REYNOLDS and wife Elaine of Brunswick, GA; five grandchildren, Rod DENNY, Khristen Reynolds CAPPELLI, Daniel REYNOLDS, Danielle REYNOLDS, and David REYNOLDS; and two great-granddaughters, Reagan DENNY and Hailey DENNY.  He was predeceased by a sister, Jean STOCKWELL and a brother, Bruce REYNOLDS.  A graveside funeral service will be Friday, March 4, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bray Family Cemetery with the Rev. James Earl RHINE

MOYOCK - James Earl "PopPop" RHINE, 77, of the 100 block of Camellia Drive, died Oct. 20, 2007, in his residence. A native of Blair, Pa., he was the son of the late Benjamin Franklin RHINE and Margaret Sarah Hoffman RHINE and the widower of Olive Grace Zielinger RHINE. He was a diesel mechanic with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, with his wife the proud owners of "Nannie and PopPop’s Attic" for 27 years and retired from the U.S. Navy having served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the Chesapeake Hunt Club, the Moyock Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion Post 288 and Moyock United Methodist Church. Mr. RHINE is survived by a daughter, Connie Rhine HOLDER of Moyock; two sons, Donald James "Butch" RHINE and Richard Lee RHINE, both of Moyock; two sisters, Ellen Elizabeth REIGH of Altoona, Pa., and Margie Louise SPENCER of Rochester, N.Y.; three brothers, Joseph Leroy RHINE of North Carolina, George Robert RHINE of Moyock and Benjamin Paul RHINE of Altoona; five grandchildren, Ralph Henry HOLDER, III, Jeanette Louise HOLDER, Cindy Ann SAWYER, Julie Ann RHINE and Donald James RHINE, II; and six great-grandchildren. IN MOYOCK - Robert Allen RHINE, 34, of Moyock, died January 14 in Virginia Beach, Va. of a heart attack.  he was the husband of Mrs. Lou Stephens RHINE and lived in Moyock for several years.  RHINE was a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania.  A funeral was held at 3 p.m. on January 17 in Twiford Colonial Chapel in Chesapeake, Va. by the Rev. Steve EASON.  Burial followed in Moyock Memorial Cemetery.  A crane operator, RHINE was a member of Local Union 147 and Moyock United Methodist Church where he served on the board of trustees.  He was also a member of the United Methodist Men's Organization.  RHINE served in the U.S. Navy.  Other survivors include James E. and Oliver Zerlinger RHINE of Moyock; three daughters: Miss Julie RHINE of Moyock [rest of obit cut off]  (The Southern Post - January 20, 1982)

Stanley John RICE

IN VIRGINIA BEACH - CPO Stanley John RICE, USN ret., 61, died Saturday in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital following a long illness.  He was a native of Colorado and had lived in Virginia Beach for the past 22 years.  Funeral services were conducted in the Twiford's Colonial Chapel in Chesapeake, Va.  Burial was in the Hampton Cemetery in Waterlily, N.C.  Mr. RICE was the son of Mrs. Bessie Root RICE of Orville, California and the late Dan RICE.  He was the widower of Lillie Erleen Waterfield, RICE.  Mr. RICE retired in 1961 as a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service.  He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, a member of the N.A.S., Oceana C.P.O. Initiation Committee for the past 5 years.  Besides his mother, Mr. RICE is survived by two step-sons: Jack Lee ADAY and Jerry Edward ADAY, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters: Mrs. Portia WALTERS of Olathe, Colorado and Mrs. Delphna CHEATUM of Buck Eye, Arizona; 5 grandchildren.  (The Southern Post - September 1, 1982; pg. 8)

BARCO Bertha Seylaz RICH, 96, of Barco, died Friday, July 8 in an Elizabeth City hospital. She was a native of Newark, N.J. and was a homemaker. Ethel Raley RICHARDS, 69, of Land O'Lakes, died Friday (Nov. 29, 1991) at Brian Center Nursing Care. She was born in Tell City, Ind., and came here in 1990 from Moyock, N.C. She was a punch press operator for Anderson Bolling and General Electric. She was a member of the Christian Church of Goshen (Ind.), the National Campers and Hikers Association and the Lunch Bunch in Land O'Lakes. Survivors include two sons, Owen E., Land O'Lakes, and James C., Goshen; two brothers, Albert RALEY, Pontiac, Mich., and Robert RALEY, Cannelton, Ind.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Alice Faye RIDDICK

Alice Faye Riddick, age 83, of Barco, NC went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 7, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Loftin “Preacher” Riddick and Myrtle Miller Riddick.  A life-long resident of Narrow Shore, Faye enjoyed the rural coastal life and all its natural and cultural resources. She was a 1957 graduate of Griggs High School. She also graduated from Rex Hospital School of Medicine in 1962 as a Registered Radiological Technologist.  Faye retired from Wake Radiology of Raleigh, NC and moved to Barco where she lived with her surviving sisters: Janet R. Sawyer and Rosemary R. McArtan. Faye was predeceased by her brother, Danny L. Julia Rae Hamilton RIDDICK, 88, of 405 N. Light Street, Columbia, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.  Born in Moyock, N. C., December 26, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Joseph W. and Ada Davenport HAMILTON.  She was married to Rowland G. RIDDICK, SR. who preceded her in death and spent many of her working years with the former Texaco Oil Company in  Columbia. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.  Pastor James KOO and Rev. Frank ALEXANDER will officiate.  Interment will be in Azalea Memorial Gardens.  Surviving are a daughter, Alice Ann R. JARVISBURG- Mills J. RIDDICK, 81 of Jarvisburg, NC died at his residence surrounded by his family on July 17, 2017.  Mills was born July 21, 1935 in Suffolk, VA to the late Benny Lee RIDDICK, SR. and Ophelia Booth Riddick BROWN.  Mills loved the Lord and his family.  He was affectionately known as the "Candy Man" as his pockets were always full of candy, which he shared with everyone.  Mills was a member of Powell's Point Christian Church, having served faithfully as a church Elder for many years.  He was a former member of Jarvisburg Church of Christ, having served in various capacities including Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, and Elder.  Mills also served his country honorably in the United States Army.  In addition to his parents, Mills was preceded in death by his brother, B.L. RIDDICK, JR. and sisters; Patsy R. JUMP, Evelyn R. LUTER, Dorothy R. CARTER, and Marie R. PEARCE.  Mills is survived by his wife, Virginia M. RIDDICK; his son, Mills J. RIDDICK, JR. and wife Pam of Aydlett, NC; one granddaughter, Tracy L. MOORER and husband Jonathan and one great-grandson, Lucas of Angier, NC; his brother-in-law, Wayne McFATTER and wife, Ginger of Franklin, VA; and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family members.   The funeral service  will be held Thursday July 20, 2017 at 10 AM at Powells Point Christian Church in Harbinger, NC. MAPLE - Kenneth Armistead ROACH, SR., 86, of Maple, died Oct. 4, 2011. He was born in Victoria, Va. on April 5, 1925, son of the late William Blackstone ROACH and Lottie Armistead ROACH; brother of the late William Jr., Raymond and Warren ROACH. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1943, worked at Camp Pickett drafted into the Army on July 5, 1943. Served in Gened, Manila during WWII, discharged s/sgt July 21, 1946, joined National guard in Jan. 1950, retired CW04 in April 1974 and then ran K&M Market in Currituck for a number of years. Mr. ROACH was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church in Maple, where he was honored to serve as Church Clerk and administrator and was a member of the American Legion and Sons of the Confederacy. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Billmyer ROACH; his daughter, Joanne ROACH of Virginia Beach; and his son, Kenneth A. ROACH, JR. Thomas “Tommy” Allen ROACH, 88, of 658 N. Sandy Hook Road, Shawboro, died Sunday, March 17, 2019 at Heritage Care Elizabeth City. A native of Baltimore, MD, he was born June 8, 1930 to the late John William Roach and Viola Benton Roach and was the husband of Flora Forbes Roach of the residence. Mr. Roach served his country honorably in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict and afterward worked as a skilled sheet metal worker with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and loved gardening.  In addition to Flora, his wife of fifty-seven years, he is survived by two very special friends, JoAnne West and Wayne Walston. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2019 at Twiford Memorial Chapel officiated by the Rev. Dr. John Luton. GRANDY - Nancy Lou O’Neil ROARK, age 64, of Grandy, NC, died Friday, February 28, 2003 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. ROARK, a native of Logan County, WV, was the wife of Carson Jack ROARK of the residence and the daughter of the late Harry O’NEIL and Bradie Bailey O’Neil ROARK. Herbert Alan ROBBINS

COROLLA - Herbert Alan ROBBINS, 74, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte, Fla. Herb was born Oct. 20, 1936 in Brooklyn, N.Y. and spent most of his childhood in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin. He served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant before completing his law degree from Northwestern University. Herb spent his career in service to state and federal government, retiring from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 2002. Since then he and his wife, Bren lived in Corolla, where he took an active role in his community through volunteer service to many organizations such as the Currituck County Library, Corolla Fire & Rescue and other civic organizations. He was committed to furthering the ideals of the Democratic Party on the national, state and local levels. He loved to read, write, golf, play Scrabble and spend time with his family and friends. He was a generous and kind husband, father, grandfather, and friend who made a positive impact on the many lives he touched. He will be forever loved and admired by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife, Bren ROBBINS; his sons, Guy COPELAND, his wife Debbie and children Robbie, Sarah and Lauren; Ian COPELAND, his wife Kathy and their children, Dakota and Kassidy; his daughters, Gambol BOSMANS, her husband Kyle and their children Madeline and Alaina; and Anne COUNOUPAS, her husband Jim and their children Christopher, Alex and Daniel; his brother, Ted ROBBINS and his wife Phyllis and their family of Santa Rosa, Calif. NORFOLK - Pearl Melson ROBBINS, 98, of Norfolk and Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully March 8, 2009. GRANDY - William "Bill" Tyson ROBBINS, 65, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006. Mr. ROBBINS was born in Washington, D.C. to the late Floyd and Rosalind Tyson ROBBINS. He was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army, a Shriner and a Mason. Mr. ROBBINS enjoyed hunting, fishing and piloting. He was an active member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Mr.. ROBBINS was predeceased by two daughters, Leighann and Malisa ROBBINS. Fannie Lee Muse ROBERSON, 70, a homemaker, died July 31, 1993, in Portsmouth.  Mrs. ROBERSON was born in Currituck County, N.C. She was the widow of Alton L. ROBERSON, SR.  Survivors include two daughters, Joan D. STOKESBURY of Pamlico Beach, N.C., and Judy R. HEWITT of Chesapeake; two sons, Alton L. ROBERSON, JR. of Snug Harbor, N.C., and John I. Alvin Norman ROBERTS

SHAWBORO - Norman Roberts, 74, of 169 South Indiantown Road passed away peacefully on August 4, 2019 in Chesapeake Regional Hospital. He was the son of Charlie and Mary Ellen Stevenson Roberts.  He is survived by his wife, Gloria Bateman Roberts; his two children, Laura Roberts and Norman (Sandi) Roberts; two grandchildren, Curtis (Ashley) Roberts and Megan Roberts; two great grandchildren, Hunter and Walker Roberts, all of Shawboro, NC. He is also survived by three brothers, Charles, Ben (Inez), Joe (Sylvia); one sister, Linda (Lowell) Wood; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by both parents, an infant brother and his sister, Nora Roberts. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a General Foreman and was an accomplished toolmaker. He was an active member and Past Master of Hall Lodge #53. SHAWBORO, NC - Charlie Sanderlin ROBERTS, age 91, of Shawboro, NC, died at his residence Thursday, January 9, 2003. He was born in Currituck County son of the late Thomas Marcellus and Lenora Sanderlin ROBERTS and was the husband of Mary Ellen Stevenson ROBERTS of the home. Mr. ROBERTS was a retired Farmer and attended Camden Baptist Church. He was a 60 year member of Hall Masonic Lodge #53 AF&AM.  Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Nora Florence ROBERTS, and Linda Roberts WOOD both of Shawboro, NC; four sons: Charles Fred ROBERTS of Elizabeth City, NC, Benjamin G. ROBERTS, SR. of Hertford, NC, Joe A. and A. Norman ROBERTS, SR. both of Shawboro, NC; one sister, Annie R. FLETCHER of Richmond, KY; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Giffard Kenneth ROBERTS, 75, of 1396 Nixonton Road, Elizabeth City, NC, died Saturday, July 7, 2007 at Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Coinjock, NC, son of the late Oscar F. and Eva Gregory ROBERTS and was the widower of Aileen Burgess ROBERTS. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, where he retired as a Search & Rescue Senior Chief, a retired Master Captain of the Merchant Marines, and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. In previous years, Mr. ROBERTS was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, C.P.O.A., and the Moose Lodge in Elizabeth City, NC.  Mr. ROBERTS is survived by a daughter, Janelle Roberts CARTER and husband Steve; a son, Wilson Jeffrey ROBERTS and wife Joyce; three sisters, Audrey FORBES and husband Tran, Jean HEATH and husband Bobby, and Stella McHORNEY; a brother, Oscar Wilson ROBERTS and wife Jimmie; and five grandchildren, Skyler, Alli, Matthew, Meaghan, and Henry. James Ralph ROBERTS

James Ralph “Jimmy” Roberts, 75, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, in Elizabeth City, NC.  Jimmy was born in the family farmhouse in Shawboro on May, 20, 1946, and was the son of the late James Monroe Roberts, Jr. and Helen Pritchard Roberts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Lewis Blanchard, Jr.  A graduate of Joseph P. Knapp High School and College of The Albemarle, he was retired civil service, working as a mechanic at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 2 years, and at the US Coast Guard Air Station, Elizabeth City, for 28 years. Other areas of service included serving in the North Carolina National Guard for nearly 31 years, retiring with the rank of Staff Sergeant.  An avid reader who enjoyed collecting antiques, he loved tinkering on various kinds of vehicles. Many will remember Jimmy for his ability to entertain friends and family with his intriguing stories.  Surviving are his siblings, Rosa Blanchard, Shirley Sample (husband, Eugene), Elaine Barco (husband, Gregg), and Wilson Roberts (wife, Darlene); many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.   A graveside service will be conducted on Sunday, December 12, at 2:00 p.m. in the Roberts Family Cemetery, 463 North Indiantown Road, Shawboro, and will be conducted by the Rev. Jimmie Prescott ROBERTS, 78 of 118 Bunch Road, Aydlett, NC, died Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at Georgian Manor in Chesapeake, VA.  A native of Elberton, GA, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur PRESCOTT, SR., and Clara Belle Jones PRESCOTT and the widow of Oscar Wilson ROBERTS.  She was the former owner and operator of Colony Beach Florist in Virginia Beach, VA, Past President of Teleflora Corporation for the Tidewater Area Unit 804, and a member of Coinjock Baptist Church and Great Bridge Baptist Church.  Survivors include a daughter Teresa LEWIS and husband William Meade LEWIS of Wytheville, VA; two sons Wilson Glenn ROBERTS and wife Tempie of Chesapeake, VA, and Mark ROBERTS and wife Lauri of Elizabeth City, NC; a daughter-in-law Rose Ann ROBERTS of Virginia Beach, VA; two sisters, Dorothy Lorraine NETTLES of Jacksonville, FL and Barbara Jean WHITE of Virginia Beach, VA; ten grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.  She was pre-deceased by a son Kenneth H. Laura Anne ROBERTS

Laura Anne Roberts, 56 passed away peacefully Monday March 13, 2023 in Norfolk, VA. She was preceded in death by her father, Alvin Norman Roberts, Sr.  Laura completed her primary and secondary education in the Currituck County public school system. She went on to earn her BA degree from the College of the Albemarle.  Over the past several years, Laura was a valued employee of Fresh Market in Nags Head.  Popular and dependable, Laura loved her job.  She also loved her co-workers and regular customers- treating them like her family.  Above all, Laura loved God. She served Him faithfully as a long-time and active member of her Powells Point Christian Church family. Laura cheerfully volunteered in many church projects and programs over the years.  Surviving Laura Roberts is her loving mother, Gloria Bateman Roberts; her brother,  Alvin  N. Roberts, Jr. (Sandi); her nephew, Curtis N. Roberts (Ashley); her niece, Megan E. Roberts; her great-niece, Hunter E. Roberts; her great-nephew, Walker W. Roberts (all of Shawboro, NC); and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.  The family is honoring Laura’s preference for the simplicity of cremation. Laura’s final wish to bless others has been fulfilled through tissue donation. The memorial service will be held at Powells Point Christian Church Wednesday March 15, 2023 at 11 am. Mrs. ROBERTS was born in Pasquotank County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Isaiah and Ida Holmes STEVENSON.  A homemaker, she was a member of Camden Baptist Church and Indian Ridge Chapter #319 of the Order of the Eastern Star.  She and her husband, the late Charlie ROBERTS, were former residents of Low Gap, N.C. and while there were members of Mountain View Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Charlie ROBERTS, JR.; sisters: Mildred S. POWELL and Edna S. BURGESS, and brothers: Elwood Thomas STEVENSON, Marshall Holmes STEVENSON and Ralph Louis STEVENSON.  Surviving are two daughters: Nora Florense ROBERTS and Linda R. Nellie Gregory ROBERTS went to be with the Lord on January 22, 2015 at the age of 100. Mrs. ROBERTS was one of seven children born to the late Phillip McHorney and Nellie Ballance GREGORY. A homemaker and farmers wife she was a member of Providence Baptist Church where she faithfully served the Lord. She was predeceased by her husband of 73 years William Edward ROBERTS, five brothers, and a grandson-in-law, Kenny SOHN. Surviving are her son, Glenn E. Nora Florence ROBERTS, 66, of the 200 block of S. Indiantown Rd., Shawboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at Pungo District Hospital, Belhaven, N.C. Ms. ROBERTS was born in Currituck County and was the daughter of the late Charlie and Mary Ellen Stevenson ROBERTS. A former resident of Low Gap, N.C., and former member of Mountain View Baptist Church, she was a longtime page with the Eastern Star, a graduate of TOPS weight-loss program and a member of Camden Baptist Church. Surviving are a sister, Linda R. WOOD and her husband, Lowell, of Shawboro; and brothers, Charles F. ROBERTS and wife, Lottie, of Elizabeth City, Benjamin G. Oscar Wilson ROBERTS, 78, of 118 Bunch Road, Aydlett, N.C., died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007 at Chesapeake General Hospital. Mr. ROBERTS was born in Currituck County, N.C., and was the son of the late Oscar F. ROBERTS and Eva Gregory ROBERTS. Mr. ROBERTS was retired from the Atlantic Yacht Basin as a special project manager. He began his career with Pat O'NEAL at Pat's Boat Shop in Coinjock. Throughout the years he developed skills to build and create boats and decoys which reflected his love for the water and wildlife of Currituck County. Many of his creations can be seen at the Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Corolla. Survivors include his wife Jimmie Prescott ROBERTS; his daughter, Teresa LEWIS and husband, William Mead LEWIS, of Wytheville, Va.; his sons, Wilson Glenn ROBERTS and wife, Tempie, of Chesapeake, Va., and Mark ROBERTS and wife, Lauri, of Elizabeth City, N.C.; his daughter-in-law, Roseanne ROBERTS of Virginia Beach, Va.; his sisters, Audrey FORBES of Kitty Hawk, N.C, Jean HEATH and Stella McHORNEY, both of Chesapeake, Va.; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rebecca Hamlin ROBERTS, 81, went to be with the Lord on January 26, 2018. She was born in Henderson, NC May 22, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Raymond Lee and Florence Faulkner Hamlin. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Raymond Alton Hamlin and Ronald Lee Hamlin.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, G. Frank Roberts, Jr.; her dear son, G. Frank “Frankie” Roberts, III; nephews, Gary Hamlin (Susan), Steve A. Hamlin, Ray Hamlin; nieces, Frances J. Reynolds; a special niece, Anne Burgess Jennings (Kevin); and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Becky was a member of Kempsville Baptist Church. She retired as a government secretary to the Commanding Officer of the 5th Coast Guard district.  Becky was a 50-year member, of the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Grand Organist of Virginia. She served as the organist of Berkley Chapter #52, as well as serving 3 times as Worthy Matron. She also held dual memberships with the Kempsville Chapter #173; a member of the Alkena #124 Temple Daughters of the Nile; Supreme Musician and Grand Organist of Zulekia Court Ladies of the Oriental Shrine of North America.  The family will receive friends on Monday, January 29, 2018 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. Sarah Williams ROBERTS

Sarah Williams ROBERTS, 98, of North Indiantown Road, Shawboro, NC died February 27, 2018 at Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh, NC. She was born in Belcross, NC to the late Gaston Thomas Williams, Sr. and Cloah Forehand Williams and was the widow of Walter Fulton Roberts, Sr. Mrs. Roberts was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and she extended the hand of friendship in her community and beyond. She was a caregiver for many years for her husband and, upon his death, reached out to her community, visiting, offering to drive to medical appointments, sharing her excellent cooking and by those actions was a godsend to many families and individuals. She was a lifelong member of Providence Baptist Church serving in many roles including Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School and the Women’s Missionary Society. She was a volunteer plane spotter for the Civil Air Defense during World War II.  She is survived by a daughter, Carol Creekmore (Ted) of Cary, NC; a son, Walter Roberts, Jr. (Diane) of Plymouth, NC; four grandchildren, Amy Bohannon (Doug), Fulton Roberts III, Anissa Potter (Lee), and Andrew Creekmore III (Eleanor Moseman); and five great grandchildren, Grayson Potter, Jack Potter, Abigail Bohannon, Hazel Creekmore and Perry Creekmore. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy Sawyer, Marguerite Rice, and Vivian Gregory and a brother, G. T. Williams, Jr.  A funeral service will be held at Providence Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018 with the Reverend Charles Stevens officiating. Walter Fulton Roberts III age 50, of Plymouth, NC died Friday January 7, 2022 at his residence. He was born in Greenville, NC on February 12, 1971 to Walter Fulton Roberts, Jr. and Diane Strickland Roberts. Fulton was a an IT (information technology) specialist with East Carolina Supply Company. He loved live music, coffeehouses and trying new foods. New Orleans was his favorite vacation spot. He was a talented musician and enjoyed playing and collecting guitars. He was a devoted son, brother, grandson and a doting uncle.  In addition to his parents, Walter and Diane, Fulton is survived by his sister, Anissa Roberts Potter and husband Lee; nephews, Grayson Potter and Jack Potter; aunts, Carol R. Creekmore (Ted) and Cynthia Strickland Sykes; numerous cousins and his East Carolina Supply family. Fulton will be missed by his beloved cat, Rebecca. SHAWBORO - William Edward ROBERTS, 97, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 16, 2012. He was one of 12 children born to the late J.M. and Ida P. ROBERTS. A retired farmer, he was a former Currituck County Commissioner and a member of Providence Baptist Church where he faithfully served his Lord. Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Nellie G. ROBERTS; a son, Glenn E. ROBERTS and wife, Sandra; a granddaughter, Bonita SOHN and husband, Kenny; four great-grandchildren, Christopher, Savannah, Kenita, and Toby; and a sister, Doris SKIBA, all of Shawboro. Ida Ophelia Roberts ROBERTSON, age 90 of 456 Indian Town Road, Shawboro, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2008, at her residence. Margaret Barnard ROBERTSON, 70, of 118 Robertson Lane, Maple, NC Went to be with the Lord Friday, January 12, 2018 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was born May 6, 1947 in Barco, NC to the late Numa W. Barnard and Bertie Jones Barnard and was the wife of Joseph L. Robertson, Sr. of the residence. She retired in 2007 after thirty years as a U. S. Postmaster at Barco, NC. She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church and attended Fellowship Baptist Church. She loved flowers, traveling, reading, and had a special love for all the people she met while as a postmaster.  In addition to her husband she is survived by a daughter, Angela R. Hughes (Craig) of Shawboro, NC; a son, Joseph L. Robertson, Jr. of Maple, NC; a sister, Rosa B. Lewark (Wayne) of Knotts Island, NC; a brother Numa William Barnard (Gail) of Elizabeth City, NC; five grandchildren, Hunter, Zach, Jeff, Jaimie, and Faith; and three great grandchildren, Autumn, Easton, and Connor. Belle West ROBINS

NORFOLK - Belle West ROBINS, 85, passed away Oct. 21, 2011 in Harbor Pointe Medical and Rehabilitation Center. Belle was born to the late Fitzhugh and Inez WEST in Moyock, N.C., May 25, 1926. Belle was a valedictorian of her high school graduating class at Moyock High School in 1943. Later Belle relocated to Norfolk and was employed by the old Morris plan bank in Norfolk as a bookkeeper. Belle was an active member of Larchmont Baptist Church for more than 50 years. She was past president of the Mary Martha Ladies Bible Class. Belle had been a type 1 diabetic from 13 years of age. During her life, she participated in several diabetic support groups. Belle is survived by her husband, Emmett; her son, John Timothy ROBINS; sister, Birchen "Bert" ROUSH; and four nephews, Walter GROOMS and wife Kim of Moyock, N.C., Steven GROOMS and wife Laura of Chesapeake, James GROOMS and wife Dot of Kannapolis, N.C., Mike GROOMS and wife Shannon of Tampa, Fla.; and special relative and friend, Carmen GROOMS of Virginia Beach. Brandon Wayne ROBINSON, 29, of 118 Sedgefield Road, Moyock, NC passed away Thursday, December 5, 2013.  Born in Virginia Beach, VA, he was the son of Joseph David and Stephanie Marie Cheracles ROBINSON of Moyock, NC.  Brandon was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps who served two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and was a proud member of the color guard. He was a student at Elizabeth City State University where he was nearing his degree in Industrial Engineering with a minor in Mechanical Engineering.  He graduated from Kinston Aviation School and had obtained his private pilot’s license.  In addition to his parents, Brandon is survived by his fiancé, Heather PERLIN of Moyock, NC; a daughter, Bella Marie ROBINSON; a sister, Paige Marie ROBINSON and fiancée Taylor SARGENT of Moyock, NC; grandfather, Manuel CHERACLES of Virginia Beach, VA; aunts and uncles, Joy Sylene CHERACLES of Chesapeake, VA, Andrea CURRY and husband Tracy of Moyock, NC, Tony CHERACLES and wife Theresa of Virginia Beach, VA, Ray ROBINSON and wife Karen of Cookeville, TN. His beautiful spirit will live and remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Brandon, we will be lost without you. We will miss you every minute of every day. Herbert Carl ROBINSON, JR.

On October 23, 2019, Herbert “Carl” Robinson Jr., longtime resident of Currituck County, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a retired Chief in the US Navy, and later retired as an electronics technician from Central Radio Company in Norfolk, VA. He was a volunteer Firefighter and EMT with the Moyock Fire Department for 15 years, and spent time with his local Crawford Fire Department, as well.  He enjoyed vacationing with his family in Disney World, working with model trains, and more recently making his own wine.  Carl is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda, three children; David and his wife Sara, Shannon and her husband Steve, and Sharon and her husband Bill, two brothers, three sisters, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.  The family plans for a Memorial Service in January to celebrate his life.  Gallop Funeral Services was entrusted with arrangements.  (Gallop Funeral Home)

HARBINGER - John Edward ROBY, 66, died Jan. 24, 2005, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. Mr. ROBY was born in St. Mary's, Ohio, the son of Ralph and Eleanor ROBY. After more than 30 years of service with the Defense Logistics Agency, he retired to the Outer Banks of North Carolina with his wife, Nancy in 1995. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and enjoyed all the outdoor activities the area had to offer. He enjoyed boating and fishing, was an avid golfer and a computer enthusiast. He was a member of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, where he was Knight of the Year in 1969. Doris Mae ROGERS died Dec. 6, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.  Mrs. ROGERS was born in Moyock, N.C., and was the widow of Frank E. ROGERS, SR. Orville Wright ROGERS, 96, passed away on March 19, 2013. He was born in Waterlily, NC, the son of the late William “Ned” ROGERS and Caroline Scarborough ROGERS. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 33 years of service and was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. and also worked with the C.C. camps. Mr. ROGERS was also employed with the Dare County Airport, Buildings and Grounds, and Animal Control. SHAWBORO - Terry Lee ROLLER, 53, of the 100 block of N. Gregory Road, died Jan. 15, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Mr. ROLLER was born in East Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Jenetta Midgett WILLIAMS and the late Valton WILLIAMS. He was a member of Perkins United Methodist Church. Besides his mother, Mr. ROLLER is survived by a sister, Cheryl BLANK and husband, David J. BLANK, of Elizabeth City; three brothers, Larry WILLIAMS and wife, Celeste WILLIAMS, of Grandy, N.C., Tom WILLIAMS and wife, Julie WILLIAMS, of South Mills, N.C., and Gage WILLIAMS of Shawboro. Norma Roberts ROMM

Norma Roberts ROMM, 91, of 141 Moyock Landing Road, Moyock, NC died Friday, August 9, 2013 at Sentara Barco Nursing Home.  She was born January 9, 1922 in Key West, FL, and was the daughter of the late Ernest ROBERTS and Dora M. Deyo ROBERTS and the widow of Dr. William ROMM.  She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Romm HOUCHENS and husband Butch of Charlottesville, VA; two sons, James E. ROMM, II, and companion Jo Anne HALE, William H. ROMM, JR. and wife Kathy, all of Moyock, NC; a daughter-in-law, Mary R. ROMM of Currituck, NC; nine grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by a son, Robert Haner ROMM.  A special thanks to Geraldine MERCER, a longtime member of the family.  She graduated in 1943 from the University of Virginia School of Nursing.  She was past president of the Moyock Woman’s Club, past chairman of the Currituck County School Board, past chairman of the Currituck County Library Board, past chairman of the Currituck County Senior Center Board, past member of the Currituck County Library Foundation Board, member of the Betsy Dowdy Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, lifetime member of the Huguenot Society of New Paltz, NY, appointed by Governor Luther HODGES to membership on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Citizens for Better Schools in 1961, presented the Governor’s Award by Governor James B. HUNT for Outstanding Service to the Currituck County Library in 1997, recipient of the Grace Austin Award by the Currituck County Library in 2003, and a member of Pilmoor Untied Methodist Church.  Funeral services will be Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 10:30 at Moyock Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Haner ROMM

Robert Haner Romm, 46, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998.  A native of Currituck, N.C., he was the son of Dr. and Mrs. William H. Romm of Currituck, and the husband of Mary Rose Romm, of the residence. Besides his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Mary Willoughby Romm and a son, Robert Romm Jr., both of the residence; a sister, Nancy Romm Stone of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, James Edward Romm II and William H. Romm Jr., both of Moyock, N.C.  Mr. Romm was a graduate of Christ Church Episcopal School and Virginia Military Institute Class of 1973.  He received a Master's Degree from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He received a Doctorate of Law from the University of South Texas School of Law. He was a partner of the law firm of Roy, Laine, Larsen, Romm, and Lascara. Mr. Romm was very active in the community. He was a member or Pilmoor United Methodist Church where he was chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was vice chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Museum of the Albemarle, a member of the Chesapeake Bar Association, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant, Field Artillery.  A funeral will be at 3 p.m. today in Pilmoor United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Allen. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. William Henry ROMM

Dr. William H. ROMM, 78, died March 18, 2000, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late James Edward and Henrietta Dunstan ROMM and husband of Norma Roberts ROMM.  Dr. ROMM was a retired medical doctor having practiced medicine in Moyock for over 35 years.  He was a graduate of VMI and the University of Virginia Medical School.  Dr. ROMM was past president of the Seaboard Medical Association, past president of the First District Medical Society and past vice president of the N.C. Medical Society.  He was a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church and was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.  Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy R. STONE of Charlottesville, Va.; two sons, James E. ROMM, II and William H. ROMM, JR., both of Moyock, N.C.; two sisters, Jean R. ROBINSON of Miami, Fla., and Nellie C. KINGSLAND of St. Louis, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Robert H. ROMM.  A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Moyock Baptist Church by the Rev. Scott WILSON-PARSONS. Burial will follow in Moyock Memorial Cemetery. William Henry ROMM, JR.

MOYOCK - William "Billy" Henry ROMM, JR. 69 of 157 Billy Romm Lane, Moyock, NC died Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at his residence. He was born August 23, 1948 in Albemarle County, VA to the late Dr. William Henry ROMM and Norma Rose Roberts ROMM and was the husband of Kathlyn Springle ROMM of the residence. He was an attorney having retired from his practice in 2009, a member of Moyock Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War.  In addition to his wife he is survived by his son, William Henry ROMM, II of Glen Allen, VA; five daughters, Mae FLORA (Stephen VIZER, IV) and Kate FLORA (Andrew CARR) all of Moyock, NC; Jamie ROMM, Pamela ROMM, and Joanie ROMM; his twin brother, James Edward ROMM, II (Jo Ann) of Moyock, VA; twelve grandchildren, Vivienne FLORA-CARR, Gabriel FLORA-CARR, Hallie ROMM, Emma ROMM, Skye FARLEY Austin FARLEY, Tristan ROMM, Felicia, JORDAN, Alex, Caleb, and Johnny. BARCO - Hennie Younger RORER, 96, of Caratoke Hwy., died Nov. 3, 2005, at Sentara Barco Nursing Home. Mrs. RORER, a native of Halifax County, Virginia, was the daughter of the late Willie Fletcher YOUNGER and Rosa Shaphard YOUNGER and the widow of Adrien Bell RORER. She was a chief clerk for C&P Telephone for 45 years, a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church and a life member and past president of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Mrs. RORER is survived by a son, John D. RORER and wife Deborah Cundiff Rorer of Moyock; a brother, William Lester YOUNGER of Richmond, Va.; and two grandchildren, Adrienne Kate Rorer WATSON and John Alexander RORER. Georgia M. ROSA, of the 600 block of E. Princess Anne Road, died April 2, 2003. She was born in Currituck, N.C.  The widow of Phillip ROSA, she was a member of the United House of Prayer for All People No. 1, Church Street. She was the housekeeper for three bishops.  Survivors include four sisters, Ann WASHINGTON, Katie WYNN and Rosa SPELLMAN, all of Norfolk, and Elmira DARENSBOURG of New York; three brothers, Enoch WILLIAMS and Andrew WILLIAMS, both of Norfolk, and Henry WILLIAMS of Washington, D.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  A funeral will be held at noon Saturday at United House of Prayer For All People No. 1, Norfolk, by Apostle W.R. Ennis Edward ``Buddy Man'' ROSE, JR., 71, of Moyock, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 1995, at Chesapeake General Hospital.  He was a native of Currituck County, a member of Moyock Baptist Church and was a retired farmer and logger. Mr. ROSE was the son of the late Ennis Edward ROSE, SR. and the late Eunice Sawyer ROSE and was the husband of Mrs. Nora Baker ROSE of the home.  Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Mary Rose ROMM of Currituck; three sons, William "Billy" ROSE of Currituck, Ronnie ROSE and Paul Cecil ROSE, both of Moyock, N.C.; one son-in-law, Robert H. ROMM; three daughters-in-law, Debra Y. ROSE, Lisa P. ROSE and Janet W. ROSE. He is also survived by five sisters, Marion COTTER of Shawboro, Vivian HODGES of Chesapeake, Clara PHELPS of Gainesville, Ga., Alma ROUNDTREE of South Mills, and Juanita HARRIS of Hertford; two brothers, Louis ``Little Bud'' ROSE and Thomas L. ROSE, both of Moyock; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Moyock Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Vic RAMSEY. CURRITUCK Kristina "Kristi" Eve ROSE, 17, died April 22 in UNC Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill. Kristi was born in Elizabeth City to Bill and Debbie Young ROSE. She was a junior at Currituck High School and a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Casey ROSE; and a brother, James ROSE, all of Currituck; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis YOUNG and maternal great-grandmother, Virginia WINDLEY, all of Gates County; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. ROSE, JR. of Currituck; and paternal great-grandmother, Minnie BAKER of Bertie County. Funeral services were held Friday in Pilmoor United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jerry JACKSON. MOYOCK - Nora Ellen Baker ROSE, 75, of Tulls Creek Road, died Tuesday, March 12 at Chesapeake General Hospital.  She was born in Bertie County on June 26, 1926 to the late William Grady and Minnie Kirl BAKER and was the widow of Ennie E. ROSE, JR.  She is survived by a daughter, Mary Rose ROMM of Currituck; three sons: William E. ROSE and wife Debi, Ronnie E. ROSE and wife Lisa and Paul C. ROSE and wife Janet, all of Currituck; a sister, Lois B. HASSELL of Roper; a brother, Elvin BAKER of Gloucester, Va.; and nine grandchildren: Jamie, Casey, Molly, Grady, Emily, Tyler and Abigail ROSE and Robert and Mary Willoughby ROMM.  She was predeceased by two brothers: Arvin BAKER and Delton BAKER and three grandchildren: David, Kristi and Zachary ROSE.  Funeral services were held Thursday in Moyock Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul Cecil ROSE

Paul Cecil ROSE, 52, of 212 Poyners Road, Moyock, NC, died Wednesday, September 24, 2014 at his home. He was born in Moyock on December 15, 1961 to the late Ennis Edward ROSE, JR., and Nora Baker ROSE.  Mr. ROSE was a commercial fisherman, owner of Paul Rose Seafood, and Chairman of the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission.  Mr. ROSE is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Janet Williams ROSE. He was the proud father of a son, Matthew Tyler ROSE and a daughter, Abigail Lee ROSE.   He is also survived by two brothers, William “Billy” ROSE (Debi) of Currituck and Ronnie “Ron” ROSE (Lisa) of Currituck; a sister, Mary ROMM of Currituck and eleven nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a son, Zachary Paul ROSE and a niece, Kristi ROSE.  Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Moyock Baptist Church with the Rev. She was born in Pasquotank County, NC on January 21, 1938 to the late Clarence and Susie Roberts Raper and was the widow of the late Shirley Louis “Bud” Rose. Mrs. Rose was a member of the Moyock Baptist Church.  She is survived by two daughters, Sheila Tyler and husband, Dean, of Moyock, NC and Janet Ross and husband, Carl of Poplar Branch, NC; one son, Eddie Rose and wife, Deborah, of St. Augustine, FL. Also, she is survived by a sister, Peggy Buchanan and husband, Donnie, of Sanford, NC and four grandchildren, Jeffrey Doxey, Chad Ferrell, Allison Ferrell, and Kevin Rose.  Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Friday, March 24, 2017, in the Moyock Baptist Church by Rev. Willie Bartlett ROSE, JR.

Willie Bartlett “Billy” ROSE, JR. age 75 loving and devoted husband and father passed peacefully on Sunday, January, 24, 2016 at his residence, 212 Guinea Road, Moyock, NC. Born in Moyock, he was the son of the late Willie Bartlett, Sr. and Jessie Overton ROSE. Billy was a retired meat cutter and an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a dedicated fan to UNC basketball, the Washington Redskins, and the New York Yankees. Tireless to the end, Billy was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and he spent his last years volunteering at Moyock Elementary School.  Left to cherish his memory is his wife Beverly ROSE; daughters Cindy SCHERTZ (Donald), Shannon SIMONS, Kendall CARMINES (Christopher), Amber HARRIS (Adam) and Mackenzie ROSE; sons, Daryl UPTON (Lori) and John AUGUSTYNIAK (Erin); a sister, Peggie BELCH; ten grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Funeral services will be Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at Moyock Baptist Church with the Rev. He is also survived by maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hope WILLIAMS of Knotts Island; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Alma Hayman ROSS

VIRGINIA BEACH - Alma Hayman ROSS passed away on the morning of May 25, 2015 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was 88 years old. Alma was born on Valentine's Day in 1927 in Coinjock, North Carolina to Joseph HAYMAN and Mildred Caroon HAYMAN. In 1947 she married Carol Grady ROSS of Waterlily, North Carolina. A few years after the birth of their first child Arthur W. ROSS, they moved to Virginia where they had their second child, Jo-Ann ROSS.  Her husband, Carol, who was tragically lost at sea in 1970, precedes her in death. She would never remarry. Mrs. ROSS was also preceded in death by her parents, her father in 1974 and mother in 2000. She is survived by her son Art ROSS, her daughter Jo-Ann Ross CRANE, her son-in-law Otis M. CRANE and her five grandsons that she adored, Brent CRANE, Michael CRANE, Colin ROSS, Samuel ROSS and Travis CRANE, all of Virginia Beach. Her beloved only sister Madge TODD of Barco, North Carolina, also survives her, along with four nieces, one nephew and many great-nieces and nephews.  Our beloved mother and grandmother, "Nanny Ross" was a strong and fiercely independent woman. She lived her life raising her family and expressing her incredible talents through unique and beautiful dress designs, repurposing furniture through creative upholstery and making detailed dolls and crafts. In 1994 she was featured in The Virginian-Pilot for the amazing Halloween costumes she made. Her hands were always busy practicing her craft. Her heart was open to everyone she met, and those who knew Alma admired and respected her spirit and skill. Audrey White ROSS, 87, of Poplar Branch, NC died Monday, November 10, 2008, at Spring Arbor Assistant Living, Kill Devil Hills, NC. She was born on October 13, 1921 in Poplar Branch, NC to the late Carl and Letitia (Rudie) Beacham WHITE. Mrs. ROSS was the widow of the late Joseph Alexander ROSS, SR. She was a former English/French teacher and a homemaker, who was a keen observer of science, nature, flowers, animals, and enjoyed walking the beach at Caffey’s Inlet.  She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Ross CHANCE, and husband, Joel, of Macon, GA; two sons, Carl Alexander ROSS and wife, Janet, of Poplar Branch, NC and J. Alex ROSS, JR. and wife, Kim, of Duck, NC; one sister, Catherine W. SPEIGHT of Duck, NC. Jerrald Lewis ROSS

Jerrald Lewis ROSS, 70, of Poplar Branch, NC died Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.  Born in Rawlins, WY, he was the son of the late Charles Lewis and Eleanor Walbye ROSS and was the husband of Katherine Wiley ROSS.  Mr. ROSS was, according to his family and friends, the happiest man on Earth and was one who had never met a stranger.  He was a retired pastor and former Christian school educator and principal who had a love for music.  Mr. ROSS had performed many times in churches, nursing homes, and throughout Currituck and beyond with his band, The Sonshine Gang.  He was an assistant soccer coach and had been an avid fisherman.  In addition to his wife, Mr. ROSS is survived by a son, J. Scott ROSS and wife Cathy of Casper, WY; two daughters, Diane FERGUSON of Edinburgh, Scotland and Christy ROSS of Springfield, VA; three sisters, Beverly TAYLOR of Reno, NV, and Irma ALLEN and Ellen BRADLEY and husband Mike, all of Kingman, AZ; a brother, Charles ROSS and wife Dianne of Tyler, MN; four grandchildren, Taylor Scott ROSS and wife Sarah of Asheville, NC, Tanner ROSS and Sydney ROSS of Casper, WY and Isis SAUNDERS of Currituck, NC; and one great-grandson, Kell Wiley ROSS.  Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George ROSS and a sister, Marie DICKEY.  A celebration of his life will take place Sunday, November 4, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Sharon United Methodist Church with the Rev. CURRITUCK - Joan Darwent ROSS, 80, of the 260 block of Bells Island Road, went to be with the Lord Thursday, April 21, 2011 at home with her family surrounding her. She was born in Schenectady, N.Y., and was the daughter of the late Leonard and Ruth BEST. She married Jonathan A. ROSS Jan. 29, 1955 and they celebrated their 57th anniversary this past January. Mrs. ROSS was an active member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church in Currituck and she loved the Lord Jesus, leaving a legacy of faith to her children and grandchildren. She was involved in the P.E.O. Club and the Red Hat Society. In addition to her husband, Mrs. ROSS is survived by her daughters, Suzanne, Kristine and Pamela; her son, Jonathan Jr.; and 11 grandchildren. Joseph Alexander ROSS, SR., age 92, of 3907 Caratoke Highway, Barco, NC, died Friday, September 7, 2007 at the Albemarle Hospital. Mr. ROSS, a native of Burke County, NC, was the son of the late Emma Hester ROSS and the husband of Audrey White ROSS. He grew up in the Baptist Children’s Home in Thomasville, NC, attended Gardner Webb College in Boiling Springs and graduated from Wake Forest University in 1937. He was a retired sales manager for a masonary manufacturing company and a former school teacher and principal at Poplar Branch High School. He was a Lt. Commander of the US Navy, a Veteran of WW II, a member of Hillendale Baptist Church and the church choir, the Beltsville, MD Lion’s Club, Elk’s Club, Moose Club, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Scottish Rites and York Rite Bodies. He was an avid hunter and sportsman.  Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Ross CHANCE and husband Joel of Macon, GA; two sons, Carl Alexander ROSS and wife Janet of Poplar Branch, NC, and J. Alex ROSS, JR., and wife Kim of Duck, NC; a sister, Catherine ALFORD of Asheville, NC; five grandchildren, Michael ROSS, Pam Ross LOAKSO, Andrea ROSS, Chad FERRELL, and Allison FERRELL; and one great-grandchild, Haley Ann LOAKSO.  A graveside funeral service will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 11, 2007 with the Rev. Charles STEVENS and the Rev. Charles WELLONS officiating at the White Family Cemetery in Aydlett, NC. Full military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060. James Clifton “JC” ROUNTREE, SR., 81, of 127 Cartwright Road, South Mills, NC, died Monday, March 21, 2011 at Albemarle Hospital.  He was born in Gates County, NC, the son of the late Edith Rountree CARTWRIGHT, and the husband of Alma Rose ROUNTREE of the home for fifty five years.  Mr. ROUNTREE was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday School teacher and Deacon. He was a farmer and served on various associations, the NC Soybean Board and the US Soybean Board.  “JC” was community spirited; he served as a Camden County commissioner for twenty four years receiving the Long Leaf Pine Award, served on the Dismal Swamp Park Commission and 4H foundation, worked on the Joy Creek Drainage District, served on the Albemarle Resource Conservation and Development Board.  He had formerly served on the College of the Albemarle Board of Trustees, the Albemarle Commission, the South Mills Fire Department and Emergency Management System.  Mr. ROUNTREE was a member of the New Lebanon Masonic Lodge # 314 AF & AM, the Sudan Shriners, the South Mills Ruitans and served in Korea with the US Army.  Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Cliff ROUNTREE of South Mills, NC; a step-grandson, Chris WHITE and wife Julie of Elizabeth City NC; a step-great-grandson, Hunter WHITE; and extended family Kenny and Lisa WALSH, Brett and Megan WALSH all of South Mills, NC.  Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, March 24, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel with Rev. Hugh MIZELLE and Rev. Frank THIGPEN officiating. GRANDY - John E. ROUNTREE, 48, passed away Aug. 1, 2003 in his home.  He was a native of Portsmouth and the son of the late Nurney L. ROUNTREE, SR. and the late Edna W. ROUNTREE. He was the husband of Cleo R. ROUNTREE of the residence. He was a member of the Seafarer's International Union and served his country as a merchant seaman for more than 15 years.  Besides his wife, Mr. ROUNTREE is survived by two daughters, Alicia F. ROUNTREE of Norfolk and Maegan R. ROUNTREE of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, John E. ROUNTREE, JR. of Grandy; two sisters, Linda A. ROUNTREE of Portsmouth and Rita R. Thelma Jean Cox ROUNTREE, 61, died Feb. 7, 1991, in an Elizabeth City hospital.  Mrs. ROUNTREE, a native of Currituck County, was a member of Coinjock Baptist Church.  Survivors include her husband, Barrok Windell "B.K." ROUNTREE; a daughter, Linda HOLLOWELL of Coinjock; two step-daughters, Katherine L. WILLIAMS of Suffolk and Janet E. ROUNTREE of Chesapeake; two sisters, Leola WALKER of Barco and Maggie SWAIN of Coinjock; a brother, Irvin COX of Barco; and four grandchildren.  The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Coinjock Baptist Church by the Rev. James "Jimmy'' Warren ROWE, JR., 35, died Nov. 21, 1996, in Currituck County.  Mr. ROWE, a native of Memphis, Tenn., was a diesel mechanic. He was a deputy chief with the Kitty Hawk Volunteer Fire Dept. and a member of the Outer Banks Baptist Church. Mr. Rowe was the son of Mrs. Ann Cox ROWE of Virginia Beach and the late James Warren ROWE, SR.  Besides his mother, Mr. ROWE is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Snead ROWE of the home; a daughter, Alison Whitley ROWE, and a son, James "Jamey" Charles ROWE, both of the home; and a sister, Jan BAILEY of Virginia Beach.  A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. in Outer Banks Baptist Church by the Rev. Richard Braxton ROWE, 69, of Grandy, N.C.- husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at the family home on February 6, 2021. A native of Wilson, N.C., Ricky was the son of the late Henry B. ROWE, and Mildred M. ROWE, of New Canton, V.A.   He was also predeceased by two sons, Michael ROWE and Richard ROWE.  Ricky (as he was best known) was a veteran who served honorably in the United States Air Force.  Besides his mother, Mildred M. HOLM, Ricky is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda L. ROWE of the Grandy residence; his step-mother Jackie ROWE of Chesapeake, VA; one daughter, Tina ROWE also of Grandy, N.C.; two sisters, Kathy HUDSON and Janet CARR; two step-sisters, Christina and Kem; as well as four grandchildren, Anthony, Kash, Michael, and Nicole. Mary Smith RUCKLE, age 94, of Poquoson, VA, died Friday, December 20, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Shawboro, NC on November 27, 1925 to the late Harry H. SMITH and Sallie Garrington SMITH and was the widow of Philip Stephen RUCKLE, SR.  She was an active member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Chesapeake, New Hope United Methodist Church in Hertford and Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Poquoson.  She was a Great Bridge High School Band Parent, a volunteer at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, a docent at the Newbold White House in Hertford and a volunteer at food pantries in both North Carolina and Virginia.  She was a lifelong volunteer giving to and supporting many community initiatives in her lifetime. And, above all, she was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and sister who will be deeply missed.  Mrs. RUCKLE is survived by a daughter, Phyllis R. EARLEY of Poquoson, VA; three sons, Philip S. RUCKLE, JR. (Pat) of Manteo, NC, Michael W. RUCKLE of Virginia Beach, VA and Jeffrey L. Daniel Niel RUDISILL, JR., 45, of the 400 block of Goodspeed Road, a system technician and an Army Reserve major, died April 1, 1993, in Currituck County, N.C.  Mr. RUDISILL, a native of Newberry, S.C., was employed with C & P Telephone Co. for 26 years and served in the Army Reserve for 17 years. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. He was active in several hunting clubs in the area and was past president of the Virginia Beach Bee Keepers Association. He was a scuba instructor and a boat captain in the Hampton Roads area.  Survivors include his wife, Lora W. RUDISILL; two daughters, Molly Jean and Rebecca Lynn RUDISILL; one son, Daniel Niel RUDISILL, III; his mother, Peggy RUDISILL; his father, Daniel Niel RUDISILL, SR.; two sisters, Patricia Jean and Debra Rudisill MALLON; one brother, James W. Mrs. RUSSELL, born in Jarvisburg, NC, was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Viola Rogers BAUM and was the widow of Irving Elwood ROGERS and Horace Carlisle RUSSELL. BARCO James David RUSSELL, 73, died Wednesday, March 10 in his residence. He was born in Moore County but resided in Currituck County most of his life. He was the son of the late Alex James and Emma Stuts RUSSELL and the husband of Gertrude Coggins Holden RUSSELL of the home. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a tank tester. He was a member of the Providence Baptist Church, Commander of the DAV #64, Past District Commander of the DAV, having held ever office, a member of the Coinjock American Legion Post #338. He helped start the VFW in Moyock. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II where he received two Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, the Iron Cross and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. RUSSELL was a charter member of the Westlawn Memorial Park and the N.C. Sheriff's Association. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Charles HOLDEN of Greenville, S.C., Lloyd HOLDEN of Shawboro and Edwain HOLDEN of Barco; a sister, Ruth SHEFFIELD of Pinehurst; and 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel in Elizabeth City by the Rev. C.H. WELLONS. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Mrs. Helen Barnard RYCKWALD, 70, died Saturday at 6:20 p.m. in Merritt Nursing Home after a five month illness. A native of Camden County, she had lived in Coinjock for the past 14 years. She was a daughter of Enoch and Mrs. Flora Dowdy BARNARD and widow of John G. RYCKWALD. She was a Baptist. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Floyd NEEDHAM of South Mills; a son, Arthur GARRINGTON of Old Trap; three sisters: Mrs. C.P. DOWE and Mrs. Kirby SMITH of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. Frank BURGESS of Snowden; three brothers: Louis BARNARD of Norfolk, Marshal BARNARD and Alonzo BARNARD of Shiloh; 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Twiford Funeral Home. Burial was in Forbes Cemetery at Riddle. Mrs. RYCKWALD had many relatives in Dare County. Mrs. Martha Walker RYCKWALD, age 72, died Wednesday morning at 11:30 o'clock, December 10, 1947 at the family residence following a long illness.  She was the daughter of the late Nathan & Margaret Ball WALKER.  She is survived by her husband, John G. RYCKWALD of Coinjock; one son. December 13, 1947 - Funeral service for Mrs. Martha Walker RYCKWALD, who died Wednesday morning at the family residence in Coinjock, were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence in Coinjock with Rev. W.R. STEPHESN, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating.  The casker was covered with a pall of lavender gladioli, yellow pompoms, white astors and fern.  Pallbearers were Major STEPHENSON, James DOXEY, Columbus DOXEY, Lenard OSWICK, Kinsey SMITH and David DICKERSON.  Burial followed in the family plot in Coinjock.  (same source as above)

Robert Gray RYDER, JR.

Robert Gray "Bobby" RYDER, JR. died Monday, February 26 at his home on Rhodes Road in Columbia.  Mr. RYDER was born on October 8, 1954 in Jarvisburg.  He received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam Era.  He had lived in Dare County prior to his move to Tyrrell County.  Funeral arrangements are pending.  (The Coastland Times - Sunday, March 4, 2007; pg. 12A)
