Jesse Evans

Jesse Evans was born to Jesse & Polly Evans on Sept. 19, 1842 and died Aug. 31, 1903.  He married Polly Woodhouse (1852-1928), d/o Tilman & Martha Woodhouse, on July 31, 1873 at Narrow Shore.  Jesse & Polly are both buried in the Evans Cemetery in Poplar Branch, N.C. just a short distance from Poplar Branch Baptist Church.  In 1886, Rev. Phillip Davis of Coinjock came to preach to the people of the Poplar Branch community.  It was the first sermon of record by a Baptist minister in this part of the county.  The first service was held in the schoolhouse on the Caffee property and later services were held at the home of the above Jesse EvansJesse & Polly Evans gave the land for this church to be built of which construction started in 1887.
