Spence Bright

 Spence Bright was born a slave on July 14, 1858 and died on his 99th birthday, July 14, 1957. His parents were Abram Jarvis and Bridget Forbes. On Jan. 3, 1881, Spence Bright married Cathenna Woodhouse, daughter of Sam and Phobee Woodhouse. Spence Bright's second wife was named Bettie. During Reconstruction, "Uncle Spence" worked in the Jarvis Store, later called the David R. Scott Store, at Jarvisburg, NC. For a time, he was the unofficial postmaster of Jarvisburg. This photo of Spence Bright was taken about 1938 at Charlie Wilson's Landing, Jarvisburg.
