Thomas E. Tillett & wife, Sophia Daniels Tillett

Thomas E. Tillett was born to Lemuel & Jemima Etheridge Tillett on April 30, 1831 in Nags Head Woods, Currituck (now Dare) Co., NC. He died in Wanchese on Feb. 12, 1897. He married Sophia Frances Daniels about 1851.

 Sophia Frances Daniels was the d/o Woodsey & Eliza Daniels Daniels.  She was born May 3, 1832 and died July 19, 1882.


Sarah Frances Tillett was the first child born to Thomas E. & Sophia Daniels Tillett.   She was born Feb. 17, 1852 and died Oct. 2, 1919.  She married 1st Charles Henry Midgett, Sr.; 2nd John Wilson Ward, Sr.; and 3rd Jesse Benjamin Etheridge.  She had 7 children by her 1st marriage.


Sabra Ann Etheridge, d/o Alonzo M. Etheridge and his 2nd wife, Sarah Elizabeth Daniels, was born May 20, 1866 in Wanchese, Currituck Co. and died Oct. 18, 1922.  She married Christopher Columbus Johnson on August 8, 1882 and from this union 7 children were born: Cecil E., Chrystal D., Ennis V., Cecil Elizabeth, Naomi W., Whitehurst, and Zelma Lee Johnson.
This is Willett Mott Tillett, the 8th child born to Thomas E. & Sophia Daniels Tillett.  He was born in Wanchese, NC on May 22, 1868 and died in Nags Head, NC on October 3, 1929.  He married Colinda Alice "Bom" Gallop in Manteo on June 9, 1888 and to them were born 5 children.  Colinda Alice Gallop was the daughter of Peter Gregory Gallop and Caroline Daniels [see their photo here].  The children in this picture (l to r) are: Alton LaSalle "Peter" Tillett (1899-1967), Dallas Langston Tillett (1895-1960) and Charles Sigsbee Tillett (1897-1960).

This is Woodsey D. Tillett, 7th child born to Thomas E. & Sophia Daniels Tillett.  He was born Apr. 11, 1866 and died May 22, 1931.  He married Celia Arletta Daniels, d/o  George Charles Daniels & Nancy Jane Cudworth.  Woodsey & Celia had 13 children. Woodsey D. Tillett with three of his 13 children.  The oldest girl is Lorena Tillett who was born April 13, 1896.  The little girls in the middle are Veta Shawnee "Shon" Tillett born Sept. 11, 1920, and Iva Inez Tillett who was born Jan. 2, 1915.

[Tintype photo]  This is Alonzo M. Etheridge and his 2nd wife Sarah Elizabeth Daniels.  Alonzo was the s/o Spencer Etheridge and Matilda Overman.  Alonzo was 1st married to Mary "Polly" Daniels on Aug. 28, 1856 in Currituck Co. and they had 2 children: Sarah Frances Etheridge (1857-1943) and Anna J. Etheridge (1860-??).  Alonzo married for the second time to Sarah Elizabeth Daniels (1844-1928), d/o Charles Skinner Daniels & Elizabeth "Betsy" Basnight.  Alonzo and Sarah Elizabeth had 2 daughters: Matilda Elizabeth Etheridge who married Joseph Gideon Tillett, and Sabra Ann Etheridge (1866-1922) who married Christopher Columbus Johnson.  Alonzo M. Etheridge was age 13 in 1850, 23 in 1860, 35 in 1870, 43 in 1880 and was listed in 1900 as being born in April 1839, however, his tombstone marker in the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese, NC indicates dates as "April 1, 1841 - Mar. 10, 1914".

[Tintype photo]  This is Joseph Gideon Tillett, 4th child of Thomas E. and Sophia Daniels Tillett.  He was born May 28, 1859 and died Oct. 19, 1891.  His wife was Matilda Elizabeth Etheridge (d/o Alonzo & Sarah E. Daniels Etheridge) who was born Sept. 14, 1864 and died Oct. 20, 1943.  Joseph and Matilda married on Roanoke Island on May 18, 1881 and they had one child, Ralph Everton Tillett [seen above] who was born Sept. 20, 1883 and died Sept. 8, 1960.

This is Eliza Matilda Tillett, 5th child of Thomas E. and Sophia Daniels Tillett.  Eliza was born Mar. 8, 1861 & died Dec. 5, 1931.  She married William Lawrence Meekins in Dare Co, NC on August 20, 1879 and to them were born 8 children. This is William Lawrence Meekins, husband of Eliza Matilda Tillett.  William was the s/o Daniel W. Meekins & Sarah E. Etheridge.  He was born on Roanoke Island on Sept. 10, 1856 and died on Oct. 16, 1934.

Children of Thomas E. & Sophia Daniels Tillett:
1) Sarah Frances Tillett - born Feb. 17, 1852 and died Oct. 2, 1919.  She married 1st Charles Henry Midgett, Sr.; 2nd John Wilson Ward, Sr.; and 3rd Jesse Benjamin Etheridge
2) Leonidas Rosser Tillett - born 1853 and died 1889.  He married Charlotte "Lottie" Midyett in Nags Head on Jan. 5, 1874.
3) Thomas Crowder Tillett - born 1856 and died in 1863.  [This note from Tammy--"...This child died during the Civil War and Thomas had taken the family to live in Edenton. Sophia was pregnant and when the new baby was born (a boy) she named him the same name."]
4) Joseph G. Tillett - born May 28, 1859 and died October 19, 1891.  He married Matilda Elizabeth Etheridge on Roanoke Island on May 18, 1881.
5) Eliza Matilda Tillett - born March 8, 1861 and died Dec. 5, 1931.  She married Wm. Lawrence Meekins in Dare Co. on Aug. 20, 1879.
6) Thomas Crowder Tillett - born July 9, 1863 and died Nov. 8, 1931.  He married Evilena M. Lane about 1887.
7) Woodsey D. Tillett - born April 11, 1866 and died May 22, 1931.  He married Celia Arletta Daniels in Wanchese on Feb. 4, 1892.
8) Willett Mott Tillett - born May 22, 1868 and died Oct. 3, 1929.  He married Colinda Alice Gallop in Manteo, Dare Co., NC on June 9, 1888.
9) Martha Jane "Mattie" Tillett - born Dec. 29, 1870 and died March 28, 1952.  She married Peleg Dameron Midgett, Sr. on Roanoke Island on July 28, 1886.
10) Charles Ketchem "Tink" Tillett - born Aug. 19, 1873 and died April 6, 1941.  He married Eliza Gertrude Gallop in Wanchese on Jan. 8, 1896.
11) William Brinkley "Bink" Tillett - born Oct. 30, 1875 and died Jan. 24, 1947.  He married Mary Jane Winn in Manteo on Jan. 14, 1894.
