Amasa Jones Quidley, Jr.
BUXTON - Amasa Jones Quidley, Jr., 77, died Saturday, February 23 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Buxton, he was the son of the late Amasa Jones and Evelena Stowe Quidley and was the husband of Beth Gray Quidley of the residence. He was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God where he formerly served as a board member and was a veteran of WW II having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Other than his wife, Mr. Quidley is survived by three sons: Mace Quidley of Camden, Jeffrey Quidley and David Quidley, both of Buxton; two sisters: Evelyn Cullipher and Vannie Knable, both of Buxton; one brother, Edward Quidley of Buxton; four grandchildren: Amy Dail, Natasha Quidley, Macey Quidley and Allie Quidley; and three great-grandsons: Wyatt Dail, Dustin Dail, and Jacob Dail. He was preceded in death by one son, Allen Quidley, one grandson, Mace "Aaron" Quidley, two sisters: Sara Williams and Angis Mercer, and three brothers: Snowden Quidley, Mahonie Quidley and Taylor Quidley. A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, feb. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Lighthouse Assembly of God with the Rev. David Waterfield and the Rev. Jeff Ozanne officiating. Burial will follow in the Quidley family cemetery. Mr. Quidley was a dedicated Christian, a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a true friend. Amasa Jones Quidley, [Sr.]
BUXTON - Amasa Jones Quidley, 86, died Wednesday morning [July 18, 1962]. He was a native of Frisco but had lived in Buxton most of his life. He was a retired lighthouse keeper and the husband of Mrs. Lena Barnett Quidley. He was a member of the Buxton Assembly of God Church. Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons: Snowden, Edward, Mahonia and Amasa Quidley, Jr., all of Buxton, and Taylor Quidley of Brockton, Mass; four daughters: Mrs. Ann Quidley of New Castle, Del., Sarah Williams of Buxton, Mrs. Evelyn Cullipher of Portsmouth, Va. and Mrs. Elvanie Hardeson of Morehead City; one brother, Johnny Quidley of Buxton; and 27 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. EST at the Assembly of God Church by the Rev. David Raynor, pastor. Burial will be in the Quidley Cemetery. Beth Gray Quidley
BUXTON - Beth Gray Quidley, 84, of Buxton died on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 in a Nags Head nursing home. Mrs. Quidley was the daughter of the late William Andrew and Cora Quidley Gray and was the widow of the late Amasa Jones Quidley, Jr. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Buxton. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Allen Quidley and a grandson, Mace “Aaron” Quidley. Mrs. Quidley is survived by three sons, Mace Quidley of Camden, Jeffrey Quidley and David Quidley, both of Buxton; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lighthouse Assembly of God on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Bryan Gray and Pastor Roger Barnett officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. Burial will be in the Quidley Cemetery. BUXTON - Carol McSwain Quidley, 45, died Monday, January 17 at her residence. Mrs. Quidley was born in Greensboro and was co-owner of Pop's Raw Bar in Buxton. She was the daughter of Geraldine McSwain of Vienna, Va. and the late William McSwain. Besides her mother, Mrs. Quidley is survived by her husband, Jack E. Quidley, Sr. of Buxton; two daughters: Cara Davis of Buxton and Crystal Davis of Vienna; two step-daughters: Ranae Gaskins and Melissa Quidley of Buxton; one step-son, Jack Edward Quidley, Jr. of Buxton; two sisters: Elizabeth Arnold of Vienna and Anne Hoerter of Eden; and four step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Buxton on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Waterfield officiating. Charles Lloyd Quidley, Sr.
Charles Lloyd Quidley, Sr., 72, of Manteo and most recently a resident of Engelhard, died Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at his residence. Born in Dare County, January 15, 1944, he was the son of the late Rowan Hooper, Sr. and Grace Midgett Quidley. He was married for fifty three years to the former Gwen Reber who survives. Charles was a long distance truck driver for the state of North Carolina and later retired from the North Carolina Ferry System. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds at the old swimming hole. He was known for his music passion, drawing ability and his willingness to give a honest opinion. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2016 at the Old Swimming Hole located at 410 Airport Road, Manteo. In addition to his wife of fifty-three years surviving are three sons, John Earl Quidley of Engelhard, Charles Quidley and David Wayne Quidley both of Manteo; a daughter, Lisa Foreman of Plymouth; two brothers, Odell Quidley, Sr. of Powells Point and Ralph Sears of Currituck; a sister, Jean Godfrey of Manteo; four grandchildren, Danny Wayne Quidley, Steven Quidley, Dillon Quidley, DJ Quidley and Dixie Rose Quidley; one great grandchild, Savannah Quidley and several nieces and nephews. BUXTON - Cherri O’Neal Quidley, 53, of Buxton, died Sunday, October 19. She was the daughter of Loretta O’Neal of Buxton and the late George Oliver O’Neal, Jr. Ms. Quidley was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Gray. She is survived by a daughter, Jessica Gray of Avon; two brothers and three sisters. A Celebration of Life will be held at Twiford Island Chapel, Hatteras on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 2:00 pm. MANTEO - Earl Randolph Quidley, 82, of Manteo, NC passed away on Thursday, June 4, in Britthaven of the Outer Banks, Nags Head. Mr. Quidley was a native of Manteo and was co-owner and operator of the Virginia Dare Transportation Company. He was the son of the late Rowan and Grace Midgett Quidley and the widower of Floy Mozelle Quidley. Mr. Quidley is survived by a daughter, Gail Shelton of Manteo; two brothers, Charles Quidley of Manteo and Odell Quidley of Grandy; a half-brother, Ralph Sears of Grandy; two half-sisters, Jean Godfrey and Lois Twyne, both of Manteo; three grandchildren, Daisie Alexander of Nags Head, Riley Shelton of Manns Harbor, and Kate Shelton of Manteo; and three great-grandchildren, Bella and Easton Alexander, and DeMarcus Henderson, Jr. Funeral services will be held at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at 3:00 pm with Rev. NORFOLK - Mrs. Emma Steger McCoy Quidley, 84, of 2807 Keller Ave., died Thursday [__ June 1973] in a hospital. A native of Elizabeth City, N.C., she was a daughter of John F. and Mrs. Armesia Steger and the widow of Walter B. Quidley. She was the senior member of Elizabeth Chapter of Order of Eastern Star and a Baptist. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A.E. Brusso of Portsmouth; two sons, F. Eugenia Scarborough Quidley
Mrs. Eugenia Scarborough Quidley, 85, did at the family residence at Hatteras Sunday night [Nov. 4, 1951] at 11 o'clock after an illness of one month. She was a native of Ocracoke but had been living in Hatteras for the past 60 years. She was the wife of the late W. Scott Quidley. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Vera Robinson of Hatteras; two sons: Walter Quidley of Washington, DC and Winslow Quidley of Chelsea, Mass; one sister, Mrs. Jonie Williams of Ocracoke; two brothers: Thaddeaus and Charlie Scarborough, both of Ocracoke; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body was removed to the Twiford Funeral Home in Hatteras. Funeral services were conducted Thursday morning at 11 o'clock at the Hattteras Methodist Church by Rev. W.B. Eula Mae Rhodes Quidley, 86, of Buxton died Tuesday, October 19, 2010 in Elizabeth City. Born in Onslow County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Walter James Rhodes and the late Lula Pearl Hudson Rhodes and was the widow of Mahonie A. Quidley. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God. Mrs. Quidley is survived by a daughter, Brenda Joyce Good of Buxton; three sons, Michael Dale Quidley and Jack Edward Quidley both of Buxton and Donald Dwain Quidley of Wilson; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Lighthouse Assembly of God by the Rev. Roger Barnett and the Rev. T.J. Rausch. Burial will be in Quidley Cemetery. BUXTON - Mrs. Evelena Barnett Stowe Quidley, 79, of Buxton, died Wednesday night [Nov. 2, 1966] at 11:30 in Albemarle Hospital after an illness of seven years. She was a native of Hatteras and lived in Buxton for the past 63 years. She was the daughter of the late Cornelious and Margaret Gaskins Stowe, widow of Amasa Jones Quidley, and a member of the Assembly of God Church. She is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Frank Mercer of Old trap, Mrs. William E. Cullipher of Portsmouth and Mrs. Durwood Haridson of Beaufort; five sons: Snowden, Edward, Mohonie, Taylor and Amasa Quidley, all of Buxton; two brothers: Arthur Stowe of Frisco and Curtis Stowe of Hatteras; one half-brother, Robert L. Austin of Wanchese; 24 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Assembly of God Church. Gail Barclay Quidley
Gail Barclay Quidley, 81, of Frisco, NC passed away on January 6, 2017. She was the daughter of the late Orlando J. and Emma K. Barclay. Gail was a member of Little Grove United Methodist Church. She was retired from the Southeastern Virginia Training Center. Her love of gardening touched many. Along with her parents, Gail was preceded in death by an infant son, John Russell; her husband, John Russell Quidley; and sister, Alice Bontrager. Gail is survived by two daughters, Kathy Q. Kiddy and husband Russ of Buxton, NC, and Jo Ann Q. Baum and husband Wayne of Frisco, NC; two brothers, David Barclay and wife Christine and James Barclay and wife Barbara of Somerset, PA; five grandchildren, Christy Kiddy Oberbeck and husband Doug, Rusty Kiddy, Nick Baum and wife Amy, Stella and Sara Baum; and six great-grandchildren, Alissa, Brooke, and Rylee Gail Oberbeck, Finn Kiddy, and Claire and Jack Baum. Guy Chestwood Quidley, 80, of Buxton, died Monday evening in the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Va. following a long illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Buxton. He was a retired commercial fisherman, a retired US Coast Guardsman, and a member of the Buxton United Methodist Church. Mr. Quidley was the son of the late David and Mrs. Rovenia Rollinson Quidley and the husband of Mrs. Agatha Howard Quidley. Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Mrs. Frances Jackson of Goldsboro, Mrs. Allene Gaskins and Mrs. Ersie Wilmouth, both of Richmond, Va.; one brotherm Tom Quidley of Oriental; 4 granddaughters and 5 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon in the Buxton United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jesse Staton, pastor. Burial will follow in the Quidley Cemetery in Buxton. Gwendolyn Reber Quidley
Gwendolyn Reber Quidley, a 79-year-old native of Wanchese, North Carolina departed her earthly residence February 25, 2024 with her family be her side. “Gwen” as she was called by family was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Loyd Quidley, Sr. and an infant son, Lyle Wayne Quidley. She was the daughter of the late Johnny H. Reber and Catherine Payne Reber of Wanchese, NC. Gwen is survived by her three sons, Charles Loyd "CL" Quidley, Jr. of Manteo, NC; John Earl Quidley of Engelhard, NC, and David Wayne “Quid” Quidley Sr. of Manteo, NC; one granddaughter, Dixie Rose Quidley also of Manteo; four grandsons, Danny Wayne Quidley of Wanchese, Steven Charles Quidley of Manteo, Thomas Dillon Quidley of Engelhard, NC, and David Wayne “D.J.” Quidley, Jr. (Taylor Nichole) of Charlotte, NC; and three great-grandchildren Lillyana Marie Freeman, Savannah Skylee Quidley, and Alexander Charles Quidley. Gwen was a loving homemaker caring for her family with unwavering devotion. She was a pillar of strength and support for those she held dear. In lieu of flowers, Gwen’s wish is for everyone to go visit someone -- even if its only for a minute. The family will hold a celebration of life at a later date. WANCHESE - Harriett Anna Tillett Quidley, 64, died Saturday, November 27 in an Elizabeth City hospital. Born in Nags Head, her parents were the late Marshall Fields Tillett, Sr. and Viola Estelle Tillett Tillett. She was a homemaker and a member of Wanchese Asssembly of God. Surviving are her husband, Phillip Hale Quidley, Sr. of Wanchese; three daughters: Cunthia Ann Arendts and Terry Marie Reynolds, both of Wanchese, and Darlene Craddock of Manns Harbor; three sons, George Marshall Quidley of Wanchese, Phillip Hale Quidley, Jr. of Manteo and John Mark Quidley of Wanchese; one sister, Betty Goldstein of Manns Harbor; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Wanchese Assembly of God today, Thursday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. with the Revs. David Dalton and Ton Denham officiating. Burial will follow in the Samuel Baum Family Cemetery in Wanchese. The body was placed at the residence to lie in state until today and will be place in the church an hour prior to the service. Jeffrey Dean Quidley
Jeffrey Dean Quidley, 55, of Buxton, NC passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018, at his home. A native of Hatteras Island, he was the son of the late Beth Gray Quidley and Amasa J. Quidley. Jeffrey loved being out on the water, and he spent much of his time participating in billfish tournaments and taking friends, family and visitors alike on fishing charters. Jeffrey was an avid fisherman captaining his own charter boat, along with many other boats; Jeffrey started out in commercial fishing at a young age and transitioned over to offshore fishing. Once the boat was docked, Jeffrey worked as a carpenter and had a successful construction company, the number of house’s that Jeffrey was a part of, is too long to list. He started out with Sound Construction and was able to branch off on his own. The quality of Jeffrey’s work has always been second to none. Jeffrey is survived by two beautiful daughters, Macy and Eliza Quidley; one energetic son, Charlie Quidley; two brothers, Mace Quidley (Denise) and David Quidley (Dayana); nieces and nephew, Amy Quidley, Tasha Quidley, Allie Quidley, Felicity Quidley, and Amasa E. Quidley; many cousins and his former wife, Andrea Quidley. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Allen Quidley; and a nephew, Aaron Quidley, along with some very dear friends. A memorial service was held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Our Lady of the Seas Catholic Church. A BIG celebration of Jeffrey’s life is planned for this fall or early winter and information for this event will be released soon, this will be a Team Jeffrey event! John David Quidley [Sr.]
John David Quidley, a young highly regarded businessman of Cape Hatteras was buried Wednesday afternoon in the family cemetery. He had been ill for some time. The funeral was conducted at 2 o'clock at the home. He died in a Norfolk hospital Monday [June 16, 1952]. He was 32 years old and a native and lifelong resident of Cape Hatteras, the son of David Evans and Lilla Andrews Quidley and husband of Mrs. Retta Williams Quidley and veteran of World War II, having served with the Coast Guard 3 1/2 years. Surviving besides his wife are one daughter, Karen Ann Quidley, and two sons: John David Quidley, Jr. and Maurice Lee Quidley, all of Buxton; five sisters: Mrs. Marjorie Swain, Mrs. Vena Wilmouth and Mrs. Wennie Brannon, all of Norfolk, Mrs. Inez Garrington of Old Trap and Mrs. Cathleen Meekins of Virginia Beach; and three brothers: Vernon E. and Lenwood M. John David Quidley, Jr.
John David Quidley Jr., 69, of Avon, son of the late John D. Quidley, Sr. and Mrs. Retta W. Quidley of Avon, passed away Tuesday, June 5 at the Veteran’s Medical Center in Durham NC. John suffered from lung cancer and died very peacefully. John was born on November 29, 1942 in Norfolk VA. He graduated from Cape Hatteras High School and very active in sports especially basketball. He attended Chowan College at Murfreesboro. NC and later joined the Coast Guard in 1962. He was stationed at Freeport Lifeboat Station, Freeport Texas and later transferred to Pacific Coast Guard Command home based on the supply ship KUKUI out of Honolulu, Hawaii. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother Maurice L. Quidley Sr. and wife Sandra L. of Avon. He is preceded in death by his nephew, Maurice L. Quidley, Jr. Maurice Jr.’s children are Alexander Evans and Ashlyne Marie Quidley. John is also survived by his nephew, Benjamin B. Quidley and son, Benjamin B Quidley II, nephews, Nathanael J. Quidley of Melbourne, Florida, Jeremey J. Quidley of Kill Devil Hills and niece Veronica D. Dent and her husband Donald Dent of VA. Their children are Abigail M. and Samuel D. Dent. Also surviving is his sister Karen and husband Phillip R. Vernesoni. Their children are Phillip R. Vernesoni, Jonathan D. Vernesoni and wife Leonora and their children, Jonathan D. II and Grace C. Vernesoni. John is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins which are numerous he truly loved and cherished through his life. The Funeral will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Avon, NC with Rev. Roger Dill and Rev. Bryan Gray officiating. Visitation will be Saturday evening, from 6 – 8:00, also at the Church. Burial will immediately follow the Church service at the Family Cemetery on the Buxton Back Road at M. John Mark Quidley, Sr.
John Mark Quidley, Sr., 54, of Baumtown Road, Wanchese, NC passed away Sunday, May 13, 2018, after a courageous fight with cancer. Born July 2, 1963, he was the son of the late Harriet Anna Tillett Quidley and Philip Hale Quidley, Sr. John Mark spent the last 19 years of his life as a C5-C6 quadriplegic due to a roofing accident. However, that didn’t stop him from accomplishing anything he set his mind to. He was a true inspiration to anyone he met. He fought a long, hard fight but is now resting peacefully. John Mark is survived by his five children, Anna Quidley and fiancé Beth Wanko, Dawn Sinanaj and husband Ermal, Jessica Quidley, Johnna Quidley, and John Mark Quidley, Jr.; three step-sons, Christopher Carawan, Josh Blotzer, and Nelson Keith Waterfield; and his ten grandchildren whom he cherished deeply; Adriana and Brittanee Ramirez, Kiara and Luca Sinanaj, Nysaria, Khali Jo and Michael Stewart, Star, Dade, and Jasmine Carawan and baby John Patrick who will arrive soon. His memories will live on through us forever. Also, surviving is a brother, George Quidley; three sisters, Cynthia Arendts and husband John, Terry Quidley, and Darlene Craddock and husband Gerald; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. FRISCO - J. [John] Russell Quidley, 69, died Thursday, August 9 in Virginia Beach, Va. He was born in Buxton to the late John Anderson and Etta Ruth Jennette Quidley. Mr. Quidley was a retired relief supervisor from the Ford Assembly Plant in Norfolk and a commercial fisherman. He was a former resident of Virginia Beach and a member of Oakettle Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Gail Barclay Quidley of the home; two daughters: Jo Ann Quidley Baum of Frisco and Kathy Quidley Kiddy of Buxton; one brother, Leighton Anderson Quidley of Augusta, Ga; 5 grandchildren: Sara Ann Baum, Stella Ann Baum, Nicholas Wayne Baum, Christy Oberbeck and Russell Dale Kiddy, Jr.; and two great-grandchildren: Alissa and Brooke Oberbeck. Mr. Jonathan Walter Charles Quidley died unexpectedly in Phoenix, AZ December 16, 2017. He was 36 and the son of the late William and Patsy Quidley. Jonathan was born in Elizabeth City and raised in Hatteras. His survivors include his daughter and two sisters and many other family members and friends. He lived in Phoenix the past several years. Plans are pending for a memorial service on Friday December 29, 2017 at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church in Buxton. The time is not yet final but will be announced soon. BUXTON - Leighton A. Quidley, born in Buxton, NC to the late John A. Quidley and Ruth Quidley died on Thursday March 11, 2010 at the VA Hospital in downtown Augusta, GA. Mr. Quidley retired from the United States Army after serving over 20 years and having served in the Vietnam war. He was the recipient of many military awards including: the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and Technical Medal 2nd Class (Vietnam). Mr. Quidley was a Freemason as well as a member of the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He retired from the Department of Veterans Administration after 20 years of service. A member of the Buxton United Methodist Church of Buxton, NC, Mr. Quidley is survived by his loving wife, Grace L. Quidley of Augusta, GA; daughter, Deborah (Quidley) Bates of Alexandria, VA; son, Michael L. Quidley of Woodbridge, VA; his predeceased son, Leighton A. Quidley Jr.; his granddaughter, Kimberly A. He was born September 27, 1926 in Buxton, NC to the late David Quidley and Lila Andrews Quidley and was the widower of Martha Louise Quidley. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII and retired as a Lt. Commander from the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of Accomack Masonic Lodge in Chincoteague, VA having received a fifty-year pin. He is survived by a son, Richard Quidley (Brenda); a sister, Kathleen Grizzard of Suffolk, VA; two grandchildren, Samantha Vaughn, and Brian Quidley (Natalee); and four great grandchildren, Fallon Quidley, Lisandra Leon, Allison Vaughn, and Jason Joseph Rudd, Jr. He was pre-deceased by two sons, Lenwood Quidley, Jr. and Tommy Quidley; and ten siblings. He was born in Dare County, the son of the late Rowan H. and Gracie Midgett Quidley and was the husband of Mildred Forbes Twiford Quidley of the residence. He was co-owner of Virginia Dare Transportation Co. and a Methodist. Besides his wife, Mr. Quidley is survived by two daughters: Betty Quidley Beasley and Karen Quidley Pierce Quidley, both of Coinjock; three sisters: Lela Jones of Portsmouth, Va., Irene Payne of Manteo, and Grace O'Neal of Wanchese; three brothers: Earl Quidley and Charles Quidley, both of Manteo, and Odell Quidley of Powells Point; two step-sisters: Lois Twine and Gene Godfrey, both of Manteo; and a step-brother, Ralph Sears of Grandy. Martha Louise West Quidley, 88, of Elizabeth City, NC died Saturday, September 9, 2017 at Kindred Care Nursing Home. A native of Dare County, NC, she was born August 4, 1929 to the late John West and Ida Willis West O’Neal. Mrs. Quidley was a homemaker and a member of Buxton Assembly of God. She is survived by her husband Lenwood Morris Quidley of sixty-nine years; two sons Lenwood Quidley Jr. and Richard Quidley, (Brenda); two grandchildren, Brian Quidley, (Natalee), Samantha Allred, (Joey); and four great grandchildren, Lia, Allison, Joey, Falon. Mary Elizabeth Quidley
Mary Elizabeth Quidley, 64, of Kitty Hawk, NC, unexpectedly passed away on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at The Outer Banks Hospital. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, on June 4, 1957, to Mary Karolyn Whitfield Quidley and the late William (Bill) Johnston Quidley. Mary was the beloved granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Ashley (Elizabeth Smith) Whitfield. Along with her mother, she is survived by four siblings, two nieces and two nephews: Gracie Quidley (Barco, NC), Susan Quidley and daughter Ashley Quidley (Kitty Hawk, NC) Willie Quidley and son Lane Quidley (Currituck, NC), Karol Quidley and children Beaman Hines, Jr. and Annaleigh Hines (Kitty Hawk, NC.) Mary’s always happy, kind, caring, generous spirit resulted in anyone lucky enough to meet her to instantly like her and those fortunate enough to know her well to love her. She leaves behind many dearly loved friends she considered family including Debbie and Victor Diaz (Kill Devil Hills, NC), Carl and Jennifer Berry (Kitty Hawk, NC), Lynn Hines and Barb Bradac (Sparta, GA), Wendi Willoughby (Kill Devil Hills, NC), Shawn Murphy (Kill Devil Hills, NC), Mike Harris (Currituck, NC), Missy and Ray Bateman (Bassett, VA) and many more. She was an animal lover and leaves in the loving care of her family her beloved Andy Dandy, Rosemary, Dorothy Vader, and others. Mary graduated from Manteo High School in 1975, attended College of the Albemarle and graduated from Western Carolina University. Upon graduating, she returned home to Kitty Hawk and shortly thereafter begin her life-long career in municipal government. She served as the first full-time employee for the Town of Kitty Hawk when it incorporated in 1981. In 1984 she joined the Town of Kill Devil Hills as Tax Collector and was later sworn in as Town Clerk. She happily and loyally served in this position for 37 years until the time of her death. She earned the esteemed designation of Certified Municipal Clerk, served on numerous boards for the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks and had received acceptance into the Master Municipal Clerk program through the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. She was instrumental in envisioning and developing numerous community programs and events. Most gratifying to her was The Paws Park which opened in June 2019. Mary was a proud third-generation Kitty Hawker. Later in life, she bought a little house in the mountains and made Fairystone, Virginia her part-time home as often as possible. She was a life-long collector of beach glass, an avid reader and lover of books, a historian and, self-educated expert of World War II/Holocaust history and Civil War history. All who knew her are certain she could have become a Jeopardy champion. She was a talented stained-glass artist and had the honor of presenting President George H.W. Bush with one of her pieces during the 100th Anniversary of Flight celebration at Wright Brothers National Memorial. She inherited a love of flowers and gardening from her grandmother, enjoyed cooking and baking great food and most especially sharing it with friends and loved ones. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Wallace H. Mary Karolyn Whitfield Quidley
Mary Karolyn Whitfield Quidley, 81, passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2023, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on November 6, 1941, to the late George Ashley and Elizabeth Smith Whitfield. Karolyn was raised in Kitty Hawk Village, only leaving to accompany her husband while stationed during his service in the U.S. Army. The rest of her life was spent in Kitty Hawk raising her children and eventually helping to raise her grandchildren. She retired after thirty years with Dare County Schools, working in the library at Kitty Hawk Elementary School, and happily and proudly driving the Colington route school bus. She always called the students who rode her bus “her kids.” For many years, one of her most rewarding activities was leading the students in creating the school yearbook. She enjoyed many happy moments, made many happy memories, and developed life-long friendships during her time at KHES. She was an animal lover at heart, caring for many dogs and cats during her lifetime, and saving many turtles throughout her years. The true loves of her life were her grandchildren, and she devoted herself to them at every chance given. She encouraged them (and all children) to develop a love for reading and learning. Those fortunate enough to know her were most certainly blessed by her helpfulness, generosity, honesty, caring, kindness, and beautiful smile. Along with her parents, Karolyn is preceded in death by her two daughters Susan Quidley and Mary Quidley; her sister, Kaye Whitfield; and her husband, William “Bill” Quidley. AVON - Maurice “Reese” Lee Quidley, Jr. U.S. Navy, 36, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician First Class died in a motorcycle accident in Sigonella, Sicily on September 27. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC, on May 7, 1973 and is a Hatteras Island native. Reese joined the Navy in October 1993 with his most recent service as an EOD Technician serving two combat tours in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and one tour in support of Special Operations Command Europe. Reese was stationed in Sigonella, Sicily with Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Eight. He is survived by his wife, Jasmin D. Quidley, his son, Alexander E. Quidley, and his daughter, Ashlyne M. Quidley. He also leaves his parents, Sandra and Maurice L. Quidley Sr. of Avon, NC; his brothers and sister, Benjamin, Nathanael, Jeremey, and Veronica D. Dent, and brother-in-law, Donnie D. Dent; his paternal grandparents, John D. Quidley (deceased), Retta Quidley and maternal grandparents, Wallace and Ann L. Mrs. Missouri James Quidley, 61, a native of Dare County, died Monday night [Nov. 9, 1953] at 10 o'clock at the residence in Avon after an illness of 6 months. She was the daughter of the late Mary Austin and Joseph M. Gray and was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Avon. She is survived by her husband, Ernest B. Quidley; one daughter, Mrs. Walter Williams of Colington; two brothers; Saunders P. and Mitchell J. Gray, both of Avon; two sisters: Mrs. Pritchard Gray and Mrs. Sudie Scarborough of Avon; and 4 grandchildren. He was the son of the late Amasa Jones and Evelyn Stowe Quidley. HATTERAS SEAMAN DROWNS IN NORFOLK - A verdict of accidental drowning was rendered by a Portsmouth, Va. coroner in the death of Norris Sherwood Quidley, 39, of Hatteras, whose body was recovered from the Elizabeth River near Pinners Point. Quidley, who was employed as fireman aboard the barge Harry Rush, was last seen on Jan. 13 according to the boat captain, R.F. Melvin. A Southern Railway watchmen, Richard Dew, told officials that he saw Quidley around 3 a.m. on Jan 14 and that he was heading toward the barge which was tied up in a pier at Pinners Point. Quidley was the son of the late Levin A. and Mrs. Laura Odin Quidley. He is survived by two brothers, Norman W. Quidley of Hatteras and Reuben N. Quidley of St. Petersburg, Fla. Philip Hale Quidley, Jr.
BAUMTOWN - Philip Hale Quidley, Jr., 44, of Baumtown (near Wanchese), died Wednesday, April 18 at his residence. Mr. Quidley was born in Edenton and was a carpenter. He was a veteran, having served in the US Army and was a Protestant. He was the son of Philip Hale Quidley, Sr. of Baumtown and the late Harriett Tillett Quidley. Besides his father, Mr. Quidley is survived by his companion, Teresa Willoughby Quidley of Manteo; three sons: Philip Hale Quidley Foreman of Baumtown, Charles Ivan Aycock Quidley Foreman and Joseph Ian Quidley, both of Manteo; three sisters: Cynthia Q. Arendts and Terry Q. Reynolds of Baumtown and Darlene Q. Craddock of Manns Harbor; two brothers: John Mark Quidley and George Marshall Quidley, both of Baumtown. Graveside services were at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, in the Sam Baum Family Cemetery in Baumtown. Dwight Wheless officiated. Twiford's Colony Chapel in Manteo handled arrangements. Philip Hale Quidley, Sr.
Philip Hale Quidley, Sr., 78, of Wanchese, died Thursday, October 11, 2012 in Hampton, VA. Born in Wanchese, he was the son of the late George Hale Quidley and Gertrude Baum Quidley Daniels and was the widower of Harriett Anna Tillett Quidley. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Delores Jean Quidley and a son, Philip Hale Quidley, Jr. Mr. Quidley is survived by three daughters, Cynthia Ann Quidley Arendts and husband, John of Wanchese, Terry Marie Quidley of Wanchese, and Darlene Quidley Craddock and husband, Jerald of Manns Harbor; two sons, George Marshall Quidley and John Mark Quidley both of Wanchese; a sister, Phyllis Sanderlin of Columbia; eighteen grandchildren and twenty nine great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 4:00 PM at Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo with Pastor Rick Daniels officiating. Burial will be in the Samuel Baum Family Cemetery. Retta Williams Quidley
Retta Williams Quidley, 94, passed away at her daughter’s home in Buxton on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at 6:15pm with her family by her side. A native of Avon, she was born on June 21, 1921 to the late Charles Thomas Williams II and Iantha O’Neal Williams. From 1946 to 1966, Retta resided at her home in Buxton raising her children. After being widowed in 1952 she remained in Buxton attending Buxton United Methodist Church and teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. She was faithful to her Lord and the church. In 1966, she sold her home in Buxton and built a new home in Avon. There she returned to her family and church and began working as a clerk for the United States Postal Service, retiring after 22 years. She was a Sunday school teacher and the Sunday school superintendent at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Avon. She will be missed greatly, Gods blessings are hers. Retta is survived by a daughter, Karen Vernesoni and husband, Phil; a son, Maurice L. Quidley, Sr. and wife, Sandra; grandchildren, Phillip Vernesoni, Jonathan Vernesoni, Benjamin Quidley, Veronica Dent, Nathaniel Quidley and Jeremy Quidley; great-grandchildren, Gracie and Jonathan II Vernesoni, Alex and Ashlyne Quidley, Abigail and Samuel Dent, Brock and Brantley Quidley and Ella and Sienna Quidley; and great-great-grandson, Evan Quidley. She is also survived by two sisters, Vera W. Meekins and Gloria W. O’Neal. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John David Quidley; son, John D. Quidley, Jr.; grandson, Maurice L. Quidley, Jr; and five siblings, Cameran Williams, Velma W. Barnette, Charles Williams III, Beatrice W. Hooper and Gerald D. Williams. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 11:00am at St. Johns United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Wolf officiating. BUXTON, N.C.--Mrs. Rovena Robertson [sic] Quidley, age 91, a native of Hyde Co. and a resident of Dare County for the last 75 years, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 1955 at the residence after an illness of 8 weeks. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Ursa Wise of Kinston; 3 sons: Tom Quidley of Pamlico, David Quidley of Old Trap and Guy Quidley of Buxton; a step-son, William E. Quidley of Buxton; 26 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at the Buxton Methodist Church of which she was a member, Monday, Sept. 5, 1955 by the Rev. Don Meadows, pastor. Burial will be in the Quidley Cemetery at Buxton. ROWAN H. QUIDLEY, JR. DIES SATURDAY NIGHT - Funeral services for Rowan H. Quidley, Jr., 9 years of age, were conducted Monday afternoon at two o'clock at the Manteo Methodist Church with Rev. M.W. Manness officiating. The little boy died at his home Saturday night [Dec. 4, 1943] after many months of suffering from a heart ailment. He would have been in the fourth grade at school this year and his passing is mourned by his many little friends. Music for the services was rendered by a choir made up of members of the fourth grade of the Manteo school and several other grammar grade students. Jack Cahoon sang, "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam", and the choir sang "Jesus Loves Me" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer". Pallbearers were Billy Cox, Jule Burrus, Billy Walker, Dan Cannady, Jr., H.A. Creef, Jr. and Harry Hostvedt, all high school boys. School was dismissed at noon in order that the students might attend the funeral. Rowan is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Quidley; eight brothers and sisters: Mrs. Joe Jones, Jane Quildey, Irene Quidley, Earl Quidley, Leonard Quidley, Colleen, Billy and Odell Quidley, all of Manteo; and a large number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Ruben "Rube" Quidley, 63, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Norfolk, Va., died Tuesday [Aug. 22, 1967] in a hospital after a long illness. He was a native of Cape Hatteras. He was the husband of Mrs. Dana Midgett Quidley. Besides his widow, surviving are two sons, two daughters, a brother and several grandchildren. BUXTON - Ruth Jennette Quidley, 93, of Buxton, died September 15, [1992] in Ft. Gordon, Ga. Mrs. Quidley was a native of Buxton and a homemaker. She was the daughter of the late Nasa Farrow and Mrs Alice Gray Jennette and the widow of John Anderson Quidley. She was a member of the Buxton United Methodist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Molsie Q. Meekins of Buxton; two sons: John R. Quidley of Frisco and Leighton A. Quidley of Augusta, Ga.; six sisters: Lorena Hornbacker of Norfolk, Va., Edith Bradley and Dolores Gillikin, both of Buxton, Rachel Austin of Avon, Elena Gillikin of Otway, and Elizabeth Hooper of Southern Shores; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Buxton United Methodist Church by the Rev. James C. Huskins with burial following in the Quidley Cemetery. Mrs. Sadie Payne Quidley, 74, died Thursday of last week in her home. A native of Rodanthe, she was a daughter of John T. and Mrs. Mary Gray Payne and the wife of Guy Quidley. She was a member of Buxton United Methodist Church. Besides her husband she was survived by three daughters: Mrs. Francis Jackson of Buxton, and Mrs. Ersie Q. Wilmouth and Mrs. Aline Gaskins of Richmond; two half-brothers: Jethro Payne of Wanchese and Farrowy Payne of Salvo; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Susan Kaye Quidley, 60, of Kitty Hawk, NC, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2022, in the Cancer Care unit of Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. She was born in Elizabeth City, NC, on January 29, 1962, to Mary Karolyn Whitfield Quidley and the late William (Bill) Johnston Quidley and was the cherished granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Ashley (Elizabeth Smith) Whitfield. She is survived by her loving and beloved daughter Ashley Elizabeth Quidley, her mother, Karolyn Quidley, sister, Gracie Quidley (Barco, NC), brother, Willie Quidley (Currituck, NC), and his son and granddaughter, Lane and Linlee May Quidley, sister and her two children, Karol Quidley (Kitty Hawk), Beaman Hines Jr., and Annaleigh Hines. She is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Quidley. She is also survived by her extended family: Godson, Samuel Jackson (Sam) Smith (Kitty Hawk), Samuel (Sammy) and Jackie Smith (Kitty Hawk), and their children and families, The Ambroses, The Brittons, The Coders, The Martins, and The Smiths. She attended Manteo High School, Rock Christian Academy, and College of the Albemarle. Susan was a loving and devoted mother and aunt. The greatest happiness of her life was the birth of her daughter. Spending time with her daughter, her niece, nephews, and extended families was always her greatest joy. She loved her family, extended family, and friends immeasurably and everyone fortunate enough to be loved by her knew it well. She knew how to enjoy the little things in life like family game nights, watching the sunsets from the Avalon Pier parking lot, having lunch with her nephew Beaman and anyone else who stopped by the office, and most of all, making it a daily point to remind her daughter to “Look at the moon, Ashley!” She proudly lived her entire life as a third-generation Kitty Hawker, worked in the Outer Banks business community her entire adult life and made many life-long friends throughout the years. The family will receive visitors at Twiford Colony Chapel on Wednesday, April 13, 2022, from 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM. BUXTON - Taylor Quidley, 71, died December 28 in Elizabeth City. He was retired from the Coast Guard and attended Lighthouse Assembly of God in Buxton. A native of Buxton, he was the son of the late Amasa and Evelyna Stowe Quidley and the husband go Mrs. Carol Fortier Quidley of the home. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, Peter Quidley of Chatham, Mass; two sisters: Evelyn Cullipher and Alvania Knable, both of Buxton; three brothers: Edward Quidley, Mahoney Quidley and Amasa Quidley, Jr., all of Buxton; and 1 grandchild. Funeral services were set for Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Waterfield to officiate. Burial will following in the Quidley family cemetery in Buxton. Walter Bruce Quidley
Walter Bruce Quidley, 67, husband of Mrs. Emma Steger Quidley, died at a Norfolk hospital Wednesday, April 1. Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Betty J. Wollner of France; a son, James F. Quidley of Hyattsville, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Vera Robinson of Hatteras; 6 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Mr. Quidley was a native of Hatteras, going away several years ago, and for a time was a resident of Washington, DC and had been a resident of Norfolk for the last four years, residing at 4306 Colonial Ave. He was a member of Naval Lodge #4 AF&AM of Washington, DC and Universal Craftsmen Council of Engineers, Columbia #22. BUXTON - William Snowden "Sonny" Quidley, Sr., 48, of Buxton, died Tuesday, August 12, in an Elizabeth City hospital. Mr. Quidley, a native of Buxton, was owner and operator of Sonny's Waterfront Restaurant in Hatteras for 22 Years and also served in the U.S. Navy. He was the son of Mary Ella Stowe Quidley and the late William Snowden Quidley, Sr. of Buxton. He was the husband of Patsy Hun Quidley of the home. Besides his wife and mother, Mr. Quidley is survived by four children: Babette Q. Ebert, Lee Ann Quidley, William Snowden "Sonny Boy" Quidley, III, and Jonathan Walter Charles Quidley, all of Buxton; three sisters: Gilda Waterfield of Buxton, Evelena Daniels of Wanchese, and Kay Hoggard of Windsor; one grandchild, Cutler Ebert; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held at the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Buxton on Aug. 15, with the Rev. Shawn Mizelle officiating. Burial will be in the Quidley Cemetery.
