Donald McDade Dies:Orange Commissioner Hillsboro- Donald McDade, member of the Orange County Board of Commissioners and chairman of the Orange County Public Welfare Board, died in Durham Wednesday at the age of 49.
He was a farmer and church and civic leader in the Cedar Grove community of northern Orange County. He was a member of the Schley American Legion post and of Eagle Legion Lodge 19, AF&AM of Hillsboro. McDade was a graduate of Aycock High School, a member of the board of stewards of the Cedar Grove Methodist Church and a past president of the Cedar Grove Ruritan Club. Gov Terry Sanford appointed McDade to the Better Schools Committee in 1961. The appointment was in recognition of McDade’s long interest in schools and their welfare.
McDade entered Veterans Hospital in Durham early this month following a heart attack on the eve of his re-election as an Orange County Commissioner. He would have been sworn into his second elected term on the first Monday in December. He was appointed to the commissioner post in 1956 to fill the vacancy of the late Claude Pope of Cedar Grove. He was elected to his first four-year tern in 1958 and re-elected in the past general election. The Orange County courthouse was ordered closed from 10AM to 1PM Friday in tribute to McDade and so that courthouse employees might attend his funeral.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11: AM Friday from the Cedar Grove Methodist Church by Rev Clyde Tucker and Rev Richard Peterson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, the former Jean Liner; two daughters Karen and Betty McDade; one son Donald McDade, Jr; four brothers, Jack of Chapel Hill, Carl C of Baltimore, Md; Matt C of Washington and Larry B McDade of Waynesboro, Va; and three sisters, Mrs. S A Underhill of Durham, Mrs. Harold Keating of Raleigh and Mrs. John H Pope of Durham.
Pallbearers will be Frank McDade, Charles Langston, Gordon Liner, Bobby Hughes, Hughes Oakley and Glenn Caruthers.
