HILLSBOROUGH, Orange County, NC – Matt Compton McDade of 5460 Patillo Rd., Burlington, Alamance County, North Carolina died June 12, 2002. Mr. McDade was the son of Carl Compton McDade and Lessie Haley McDade of Cedar Grove, NC. He attended Aycock High School, Louisburg College and he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a major in Journalism. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and served on the Stars and Stripes newspaper in Cairo, Egypt during World War II. After the war he worked on the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Washington Post. He moved to London England and held a position with the US State Department in 1947. When he returned to the States he returned to the staff of the Washington Post and then later began working at the National Geographic Society. He held the position of Assistant News Editor at National Geographic and was fortunate to serve as chief news officer in Katmandu, Nepal with the 1964 Mt. Everest Expedition of Barry Bishop. In 1968 he moved to Los Angeles and worked for Litton Industries where he was the editor of the in house bimonthly publication and the Annual Report. At the age of 50 he went to work for the Bank of America in San Francisco as a public relations officer. He was promoted to Vice President of Public Relations east of the Mississippi and moved to New York City in 1979. While in New York City he was an active member of the Businessmen and Arts Council. He focused his efforts on the fund raising projects for the renovation of Carnegie Hall and was involved in the planning and production of a concert that brought Isaac Stern, Mistislau Rostropovich and the National Symphony together in Carnegie Hall. He also worked with many other artists in New York through the council including Marianne McPartland and Jacque Dambroise. He served on the Board of Directors of Defenders of Wildlife 1980-1983. He retired from Bank of America in 1987 and moved to Venice, Florida and then later to Fort Lauderdale. In 1993 he returned to North Carolina and took up residency in Burlington, NC. He passed away as a result of complications associated with pancreatic cancer.
His sister and her husband, Mary Lee and Harold Keating and his sister in laws, Jean Liner McDade of Cedar Grove and Ella McDade of Baltimore Maryland survive him.
Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough, NC at 3:00 pm. The family will receive visitors at Walker’s immediately prior to the service. Arrangements by Walker’s Funeral Home of Hillsborough.
