Mrs. Nannie Jane Crabtree, age 70, of the Grove Park community off the Hillsboro Road, died Sunday morning at 12:25 o’clock at the Duke Hospital where she had been a patient since last August. She was carried to the hospital the second day after she was thought to have been bitten by a copper head snake. Relatives said that she was bitten on the arm by the snake during her sleep, being awakened, she knocked it upon the floor and it disappeared. Test made at Duke Hospital revealed that it was a snake bite, her arm never had healed from the infection. Other complications attending old age developed and she had been very ill since she was admitted to the hospital.
Mrs. Crabtree was born in Chatham County, the daughter of the late Judson and Ella Hinsley McDade. She had lived in Durham since she was nine years of age. She was married to Jessie Crabtree in 1898. He died in 1922. Mrs. Crabtree was a member of the Christian Disciples Church of Holloway Street.
Surviving are one son, Cecil Victor Crabtree, of Durham; one daughter, Mrs. Nellie Robinson, of Baltimore, Md; three sisters: Mrs. Ella Foreman, Mrs. Bella Eason and Mrs. Addie George of Durham; one brother, J Lee McDade of New York and one grandson, Winston Crabtree of Durham.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock this afternoon at the Fuller Memorial Presbyterian Church on the corner of East Main and Alston Avenue. The remains will be removed from the residence of her sister, at 1716 Newton Road, to the church two hours prior to the funeral service. The Rev. Otis Brown, pastor of the church, and the Rev Nixon Taylor assisting, will officiate at the funeral service. Interment will be in the old section of Maplewood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Frederick Hill, Henry D Hill, William Troy Eason, Wallace George, Thomas Georges, and Julian George.Floral bearers will be Mrs. Kay Loye, Miss Nita Dare George, Mrs. Roy Olive, Mrs. Vivina Allen, Mrs. C L Livingston, Mrs. Thomas George, Mrs. Julian George.
