William & Elizabeth Copeland to Sallie Ann Hughes

 

William Copeland, b. 1822, married his 2nd wife, Elizabeth McCullers, b. 1830, on Nov. 15, 1855 Wake Co., Free Persons of Color.  They lived in Wake, Granville and Franklin Counties by 1870; Sallie Ann Hughes was Elizabeth's daughter, who was married to Henry Hughes of Wake County.

This Deed made this the 6th day of February A.D.  1894 by WILLIAM COPELAND and wife ELIZABETH COPELAND of the County of Franklin , and State of North Carolina of the first part and SALLIE ANN HUGHES of the County of Wake of the second part.  Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part in consideration of the sum of Ten Dollars to them in hand paid by MRS. SALLIE ANN HUGHES, party of the second part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged have given, granted, bargained and sold and by their presents, do give, grant, bargain, sell and convey to MRS. SALLIE ANN HUGHES, and her heirs, all the right, title, claim, interest and demand, that we, the parties of the first part, have or may have in and to a certain lot or parcel of land in the County of Wake, City of Raleigh, N.C. situated in the South Eastern portion of said City bounded as follows, To wit: Beginning at a point on Cabarrus Street the South East corner of MISS SAMANTHA SAUNDERS lot running thence East with Cabarrus Street (52 1/2) Fifty two and one half feet, thence North to KATE DOHERTY's line, thence west with west said line to MISS SAMANTHA SAUNDERS Eastern boundary line (52 1/2)  Fifty two and one half feet, thence with said line, south to the beginning containing one fourth of an acre more or less (being the lot or parcel of land conveyed to SALLIE ANN JONES, wife of JOHN A. JONES in the 15th day of December 1875 by N .V. DENTON and  other).   To have and to hold the aforesaid lot or parcel of of land and all possesses and appurtenances thereto belonging to the said MRS. SALLIE ANN HUGHES and her heirs in fee simple forever.   In witness whereof, the said WILLIAM COPELAND and ELIZABETH COPELAND have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year above written.

I, WM. H. MITCHELL, Justice of the Peace, do hereby certify that WILLIAM COPELAND and ELIZABETH COPELAND his wife personally appeared before me this day and acknowledged the due execution of the within deed of conveyance; and the said ELIZABETH COPELAND being by me privately examined separate and apart from her said husband touching her voluntary execution of the same, doth state that she signed the same fully and voluntarily without fear or compulsion of her said husband, or any other person and that she doth still voluntarily assent thereunto.
