His name was actually “Hadaway” and appears as that in the 1790 census and other documents. His descendants today use “Hadaway”

The entire document is in one hand, including signatures of all parties.

 

In the Name of God amen I William Hattaway of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina being of sound & disposing mind and memory, do without any Frivolous Formalities in manner and form following to wit, Imprimis [sic]. My will and desire is that all my Just debts & funeral expenus [sic] be first paid and satisfied. Item I lend unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Hataway all my land and plantation whereon I now live for & during the Term of her natural life or widowhood also all the Rest of my Estate be it of whatsoever nature or kind, both within and without doors, except the Legacys herein after mentioned. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Elizabeth Hattaway, one feather Bed & furniture to her her heirs & assigns for ever. Item I give & bequeath to my daughter Sally Hattaway one feather Bed and furniture to her her heirs and assigns for ever. Item I give devise and Bequeath to my Sons Thomas Hattaway, David Hattaway & Jesse Hattaway an Equal share of my land & plantation whereon I now live after the death or marriage of their mother Elizabeth Hattaway to them their heirs & assigns for ever. Item I give & bequeath after my wifes [sic] death to my Six children, to wit, Mary Morriss, Thomas Hattaway, Elizabeth Hattaway, David Hattaway, Jesse Hattaway and Salley Hattaway all the rest of my Estate not heretofore bequeathed to be equally divided amongst them, Share & Share alike to them their heirs and assigns forever. Item and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my wife Elizabeth Hattaway Thomas Hattaway, David Hattaway and Jesse Hattaway My whole and sole executors of this my last Will & Testament utterly revoking & disannulling all other will or wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal this nineteenth day March A.D. 1787

February Sessions 1795 then this will was Executed in open court & duly proved by the oath of Francis Wootten one of the Subscribing witnesses thereto and on Motion ordered to be Recorded, whereupon Thomas Hattaway one of the Executors in the said will named came in & was duly Qualified thereto
