I SOLOMON SLATTER of the County of Halifax & State of North Carolina do make and declare this to be my last will and testament as follows
I lend to MARTHA W. NICHOLS wife of THOS. B. NICHOLS twenty nine Negroes and their increase namely LIDDY, LUCY, PENELOPE, CLARISSA, CLOE, VENUS, CHARITY, MARINA, LOUISA, ADELINE, MARY DORCAS, NANCY, ABRAHAM, EMILY, DAVID, DEMPSY, DOLYTHENE, BENJAMIN, TOM, CAMBRIDGE, EDMOND, NELSON, JOHN, PETER, REUBEN, HENRY, VIRGIL, HARRY & STERLING during her natural life and at her death I give the aforesaid Negroes & their increase to SALLY R. & MARY W. NICHOLS children of said MARTHA W. NICHOLS and should either of the said girls die before arriving at the age of twenty one years it is my will that the survivor shall inherit the aforesaid Negroes & increase from the deceased.
I led to MARTHA W. NICHOLS my house and plantation during her life and at her death I give the said house and plantation to MARY W. NICHOLS in fee simple forever reserving the grave yard in the garden thirty first north & south and twenty feet east & west in the care of my Executor to be enclosed with part and plank & covers to be kept on the graves to be kept in repair & defended from intruders as long as he shall live. I give to MARTHA W. NICHOLS one gold breastpin to be kept in her own possessions as a lasting memorial. I also give to her one china press, one bureau, one loom, one walnut table, five cotton wheels, one linnen wheel, one family bible, slays & cards.
I lend to LUCY ANTHONY wife of JOHN H. ANTHONY four Negroes namely LUKE, KIAH, HOMER, HESTER & at her death I give her the right to dispose of said Negroes to each one of her children as she may think proper. I give to MARY JANE WHITAKER daughter of JAMES and NANCY WHITAKER one hundred dollars. I give to ESTHER WHITAKER fifty dollars to be paid to her in such sums and at such times as my Executor may think most conducive to her comfort I give to my Negro girls CLARISSA, CHLOE, PENELOPE & LUCY each one feather bed, one bedstead, one bolster, one pillow, one blanket, one counterpane & two sheets for their own proper use. I give to CLARISSA one bed quilt in addition. The balance of my bed clothing I wish to be equally divided between VENUS, CHARITY, MARINA, LIDDY & LOUISA. I give to my girl CLARISSA all of my sister NANCY's trunks, band boxes, looking glasses with all her wearing apparel to be distributed as she may think proper. The balance of my estate I wish to be sold, and the proceeds with my notes & accounts and about four hundred dollars which my Executor will find in my trunk appropriated to the payment of my debts and legacies and the expenses of settling my Estate my Executor retaining in his hand what he shall think necessary to keep the grave yard in repair as before named. The balance I wish to be distributed by my Executor amongst the whole of my Negroes equally say twenty five dollars to each one more or less according to the amount, sum that may remain in his hands. I nominate and appoint WM. R. SMITH my sole executor to this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 18th day of October A.D. 1848. "the word dollars interlined before signing".

Whereas I SOLOMON SLATTER did on the 18th day fo October 1848 make the foregoing will, I do now declare this codicil to be a part of said will and wish it to be construed in the same way as if it was written in the body of this will.
I hereby alter that clause of my will which gives "to MARTHA W. NICHOLS my house and land during her life and after her death to her daughter MARY WHITMELL" and wish it to read thus- I give the said house and land to t THOS. B. NICHOLS husband of said MARTHA during his natural life & after his death I give it to MARY WHITMELL his daughter. In witness whereof I the said SOLOMON SLATTER have set my hand & seal to this codicil to my will this the 16th day of August 1849.

The within division of Negroes belonging to the Estate of ELIZABETH N.
