INTERESTING INSCRIPTIONS ON MONUMENTS IN MCEACHIN AND PURCELL GRAVEYARD

(The Robesonian is indebted to Governor A.W. McLean for following inscriptions, which are interesting not only to the families 
immediately concerned but to the general public, showing the type of inscriptions formerly used.-Editor)

The following are inscriptions taken from monuments in the McEachin and Purcell grave yard on the lands of D.P. McEachin, near his 
late residence in Hoke county, North Carolina.

Alexander Mclean, Born August 4, 1815. Died February 8, 1892

In Memory of my great great grandfather, John McBryde, Born Kantyre, Scotland. Died 1785.

In Memory of my great great grandmother, Mary Gilchrist, wife of John McBryde, Born in Kantyre, Scotland. Died 1792.

To the memory of John Gilchrist this marble is inscribed. He died in May 1802, age 62 years. He had a vigorous mind, much improved 
by education and travel. He was a patron of learning, often a legislator; A Presbyterian in faith; in morals circumspect, and fond 
of piety. His wife Effie died A.D. 1794, age 46 years. A native of Cantire, Scotland. Emigrated 1770.

This marble is erected as a memento of the mortal remains of Effie, wife of John Gilchrist, who departed this life A.D. 1794, aged 46 years.
	The deceased sustained a spotless reputation; possessed a sound energetic and discriminating mind and for twenty years a communicant 
member of the Presbyterian Church, Native of Cantire Scotland. Emigrated in 1770.

Here lies the body of Gilbert McMillan, deceased on 7th day of May, A.D. 1772, aged 50 years.
	(Ibid)-Christian, his wife deceased on 15th day June, A.D. 1811, aged 84 years.

Here lies the body of Peter Smith, deceased 15th December, 1803, aged 54 years.
	And in him met endearing names, brother, husband, father, friend.

In memory of Angus Currie, born in Island of Collonsay, Scotland September 17, 1770.
	Came to America 1791 and died June 10, 1845. He was long a ruling elder in the Presbyterian church. "Well done thou good and faithful 
servant, etc."

Flora, consort of Angus Currie, Born island Cantyre, Scotland, May 20, 1774. Came to America 1775 and died September 19, 1834.

In memory of Archibald McLean, who died Dec. 7, 1843, in the 43rd year of his age.

Sacred to the memory of Neill McLean, who departed this life Sept. 4, 1817, aged 17 years 6 mos. 26 days.
"Go home, my friends, and cease your tears, 
I must lie here till Christ appears. 
Repent in time while time you have,
There's no repentance in the grave."

Margaret McLean, a native of Scotland, who departed this life Aug. 1, 1850, in the 95th year of her age. She was the wife of John McLean.

John McLean, a native of Scotland, who departed this life December 29, 1832, aged 83 years.
"Attention, stranger, let my moulding clay,
Waken reflection while 'tis called today.
I am gone, thou are going ... head
Will soon recline among the sacred dead:
Art thou prepared, where will thy spirit be,
When time is lost in vast Eternity?"

In memory of Catherine McLean, who died Sept. 15, 1858, aged 80 years.

In memory of John Purcell, Sen'r this marble is inscribed, who died Aug. 7, 1850, aged 77 years. He possessed a strong mind, was a friend 
to education -a Presbyterian in faith, in morals circumspect and fond of piety.

The marble is erected as a memento of Mrs. Mary Gilchrist Purcell, wife of John Purcell, Sr., who departed this life Nov. 20, 1843, 
age 72 years.
	The deceased sustained a spotless reputation and possessed a sound energetic and discriminating mind. She was for fifty years 
a communicant member of the Presbyterian Church.
