Hyde Co., North Carolina 1840 Census

In 1840 June 1^st was still the census day but 10 months were allowed for taking the census. It included names and ages of "Pensioners" for Revolutionary or Military Services," the only persons other than heads of families to be named in any of the first six censuses.

I did not include every column in this census since there were far too many to fit onto one page. I lumped all the slaves into one column and all the free colored into one column. I totally left out the columns denoting whites and slaves who were deaf and dumb, the blind columns, the aliens column and the foreigners not naturalized column. however, I will include this information under the head of household if there were such persons in the home. This census had two "total" columns, one vertically and one horizontally. I included the vertical totals but left out the horizontal total column.

The original 1840 census had given names written first, then the surname. I took the liberty of putting the surname first and highlighting it in red for easier searching. No attempt was made by me to correct mistakes in the spelling of the names thus you should look for all conceivable variations of the surnames. This 1840 Hyde County census was enumerated by David C. Cox and no townships were given. This census was abstracted from Family Quest Archives digital images by Heritage Quest (CD #M704-362).
