John Smith Map of 1624

In 1624 Captain John Smith published The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles of his exploits in Virginia, which was illustrated by this series of engravings. Included among these was a map of "Virginia" by Robert Vaughan. This map showed about twenty Algonkian towns which were located in the area of present day North Carolina. Over the next one humdred years, the populations of these Algonkian tribes was greatly reduced by disease and other causes and after 1660, by the appropriation of their lands by White settlers. By 1733, only five towns remained.
