Joseph McGowan was the progenitor of most Hyde County McGowans. He was the son of William McGowan, Sr. (c.1708-c.1782) and Frances Hendricks of Perquimans and Tyrrell Counties. He moved from the Gum Neck area of Tyrrell County to the South West area of Mattamuskeet Lake about the time his father died in 1782. At that time he leased a plantation from the estate of Samuel Weston on Heron Bay. Joseph McGowan was born ca. 1745 and died ca. 1801. He was married to Martha (maiden name unknown) McGowan. They were parents of:
1. William McGowan (c.1765-by1820)
2. Daughter (?) McGowan (c.1767- ? )
3. Joseph McGowan, Jr. (c.1769-by1860) [to TN]
4. James McGowan (c.1774-1854)
5. John McGowan (c.1775-by1830)
6. Isaiah McGowan (c.1780-by1850)
7. Daughter (?) McGowan (c.1783- ? )
8. Jezara McGowan (c.1785- ? )Joseph McGowen, Jr. moved to White Co., TN in 1819 with his wife (unknown) and five sons. James McGowan married Elizabeth "Betsy" Hodges and they were parents of ten or eleven children. William McGowan and John McGowan also remained in Hyde County but their children are unknown.
