HUSBAND: Samuel McGOWEN Birth Date: c. 1808 Birth Place: Hyde Co., NC Marriage Date: c. 1828 Marriage Place: White Co., TN Other Marriages: unknown Military Service: unknown Death Date: c. 1849 Death Place: Marion Co., AL Place Of Burial: Marion Co., AL (?) Father's Name: Joseph McGowen, Jr. Mother's Maiden Name: Unknown NOTES: When he was a boy of about ten years old, Samuel McGOWEN moved with his father's family from Hyde Co., NC to White Co., TN in 1819. There he lived on the farm of his older brother James McGowen on the waters of the Caney Fork until he was of age to marry and have his own farm. They left White County after 1842 and may have first settled in Oktibbeha Co., MS. Samuel McGowan bought and sold property there in 1842 and Sarah McGowan sold property there in 1844. Also, Samuel McGowan was listed as the pastor of the Salem Baptist Church in Oktibbeha County in 1848. In 1850 they were listed in Marion County, Alabama census, living not far from his brother Walker and several Markhams. The 1850 Marion Co., AL Mortality Schedule lists the following: Samuel McGouner - 42 years old - Born NC - Died October - Cause of Death: Unknown - Days Sick: 21. Therefore, Samuel died sometime in Oct. 1849. Nonetheless, he was still listed with the family in 1850, however not as the head of household.
