G, 16th TN Inf. Regt., CSA Death Date: Oct. 8, 1862 Death Place: Battle of Perryville, KY Place Of Burial: unknown grave, Perryville, KY NOTES: In the Civil War, he enlisted on May 20, 1861. He was promoted first to 5th Sergeant and then to 1st Sargeant in Co. G, 16th TN Inf. Regt., CSA (commanded by Col. John H. Savage). He was killed in action at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky on Oct. 8, 1862. In the same battle, two of his step-brothers, James Helton and Lawson Helton, were taken prisoners. James died in a Yankee prison canp but Lawson was able to escape. Ozias' friend and cousin Darias Clark, also a Sargeant, was also killed, but kept a diary until the day he was killed. On Aug. 8, 1863, Ozias' mother Nancy (Morris/McGowen) Helton, accompanied by David Clark, a Justice of the Peace of White Co., petitioned the Confederate States for "whatever may have bin due my Des'd son at the time of his death for pay, Bounty, clothing or other allowances as a soldir in said company and regiment..." It is unknown whether she received anything. Additional Information: Seeking information on the continuation of the McGowen migration across the country. Between 1840-1870, McGowens moved to Amabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and Kentucky.
