Samuel Green Spencer
October 25, 1851 - February 10, 1931
Samuel Green Spencer was born on October 25, 1851, in Sladesville, Hyde Co., NC. He was the third child of William Watson Spencer and Susan Prucia Leath. His siblings were William Edward Spencer [also included on the Hyde County photo page], Sophia E. Spencer Berry, Alice Melissa B. Spencer Fisher, Mathias Jones Spencer, Alexander Griffin Spencer, James Henry Spencer, David Milton Spencer, George Anson Spencer, Susan Julietta Spencer Wells, Morgan L. Spencer, Charles Milton Spencer, and Mary Florence Spencer Wells. Samuel died on February 10, 1931, in Norfolk, VA.
Samuel lived in various places in Hyde Co., Beaufort Co., and Craven Co. in NC, but spent most of his adult life in New Bern and Washington. He had careers as a carpenter, boatwright and fisherman. However, he also tried his hand at other business ventures, including running a butcher shop.
Samuel first married Winifred on March 4, 1874. Winifred's background is unknown - different branches of the family have her maiden name as Winifred F. Shallington and Winifred Charlington Pender. They had 4 children: John Gray Spencer, Sophia Elizabeth Spencer, Lena Julittle Spencer, and Eva Mae Spencer Alligood.
Samuel's second wife was Alice Adeline Whitley, daughter of Jesse Bond Whitley and Elizabeth Wilkinson. They married on January 31, 1889. Their only child was Herman Olsen Spencer. Samuel and Alice spent their final years living with Herman and his family in Norfolk, VA.
The date on the photograph is not known.
