This document is undated, but the
date was determined by comparing district names and
statistics with returns known to be for the 1805 tax
year.
At the time the transcription of
Captain Swan’s undated return was prepared, it was
estimated as circa 1805-1809. The following document
verifies that Swan’s return is for the 1805 year.
Although Captain Wilkinson’s and
Captain Williamson’s returns carry an 1806 date, that
date is when their lists were submitted. The lists,
however, apply to the 1805 tax year according to the
following document.
This document also identifies three
companies for which returns have not been located:
Beal’s, Rosdell’s, and
Black’s.
Individuals listed near the end of
the document were late in giving in their taxable
property, with the exception of Abraham Davenport and
Jesse Featherston Sr. whose
returns were misplaced by the recording Justice of the
Peace Robert Alexander.
On the reverse of this paper is a
record of 1805 Delinquent Taxpayers, which I have
transcribed separately.
