date is provided, and I am guessing at the time period. The record is in Henry Cansler’s handwriting, and he was Clerk of County Court
September 1837 to June 1844. Cansler’s undated compilation groups the companies of
Kincaid, Lenhardt, and Randleman which implies that
all three date the same tax year.
Some of these taxpayers were in Hamton’s
1836 tax district.
Kincaid’s Company is referenced in county court
minutes of 1835, 1836, 1837, and 1838. This is not a reliable benchmark,
however, because every extant tax district was not mentioned every year.
If
a researcher is able to more closely date the list through knowledge of when a
citizen reached taxable age (21 years), moved away, or died, please let me know
so that the list can be more accurately dated for other researchers.
