Captain [Abraham] Scott’s Company, 1805

Kathy Gunter Sullivan, Transcriber, 2010

Robert C. Carpenter:

Capt Abraham Scott's Company is a very small tax district located in the eastern part of present Gaston County near Mt. Holly. Its eastern boundary was the Catawba River. Its southern boundary was John McClure's District. This small tax company was located around Dutchmans Creek and north of that creek toward the Lincoln County line. I do not believe that it actually went to the present Lincoln County line but probably south of that line. The western boundary may have been the South Fork River. The district included Thomas Rhyne, whose home still exists west of Stanley on Stanley Creek.

Most persons on this list were English speaking. I have identified the following surnames as Germans: Rhyne, Bess, Lynberry (probably Lineberger). It is unclear whether Hindricks is German or whether some of the Smiths were German. Of the 39 persons listed as taxables I counted only 4 Germans. This was a very wealthy company with a few people owning significant acreage. The number of black polls was almost double the number of white polls, which is another indication of wealth and slave ownership.

Kathy Gunter Sullivan:

Scott was the district captain through 1808. He was succeeded in 1809 by Edward Boyd, who was captain through at least 1812.

Justice Robert Alexander was appointed in 1805 and again in 1806 to receive the taxable information. In October 1806, patrols appointed in Captain Scott’s Company were Robert Johnston, James McCall, James Rankin, and Barnabas West Jr. Patrols appointed in Scott’s Company in July 1808 were Logan Henderson, Andrew Johnson, William Lumly, John Moore, James Scott, and Barnard (probably same as Barnabas) West.

On the erratic pages sequence of the 1810 Lincoln County census, Captain Boyd’s Company is identified in reverse alphabetical order on pages 482, 491, 490, and 481.
