Captain Swan’s Company, circa 1805/1809

Robert C. Carpenter:
Swan’s Company was in current eastern Cleveland County. The eastern boundary of the company was the Carpenter Company and Capt Davis tax list. The northern boundary is difficult to determine but might be Capt Yoder's tax list company. The Swan tax list company included present eastern Cleveland County including Waco and Fallston, present extreme western Lincoln County and probably extreme western Catawba County. It included the Buffalo Creek watershed which flowed to the south.
This tax district had a mixture of German and English speaking peoples. I counted a total of 90 names on the tax list of which I counted 21 German names. Prominent among these names was pioneer John T. Beam, members of the Carpenter, Anthony, Warlick and Whisenant families. Many of these people were second generation Germans, their parents being immigrants or born outside of America. Most of these Germans had begun assimilation into American society.
This tax list was also not very affluent. One cotton gin existed, owned by John T. Beam. Only 4 black polls were taxed which is one of the smallest number seen during this period. A perusal of the list shows that only a few taxables owned considerable lands. Most owned 100 to 300 acres.
Swan’s Company covers most of the twelfth company of the 1790 Lincoln County census, but not all of it. A few of the residents are found on the fourth Company of the 1790 Lincoln County census like Nathanial Harris, and members of the Whitley, Wilson, and Queen families. A few families may have come from the sixth company of the 1790 Lincoln County census like John Horse and members of the Anthony family.
Kathy Gunter Sullivan:
Presumably the Captain is Moses Swan as he is the only Swan on the tax return. The date of this record appears to fall within 1805-1809 as county court minutes in that period reference Capt. Swan’s Company and identify the district’s Justices of the Peace as John Tucker, Samuel Wilson, and David Warlick. Swan’s successor may be Gladden, but there are anomalies between the two companies’ records.
