Captain James Wilkinson’s District, 1806

Robert C. Carpenter:
Capt. Wilkinson's Company is in extreme eastern Catawba County near Sherrill's Ford area. Its eastern and possibly northern boundary was the Catawba River. I am not sure of its other boundaries, and it may appear that some tax lists have been lost on its other boundaries.
This company had few Germans in it. I counted a total of 79 names on the tax list. Of that number I was only able to count 5 German names: Turbeyfill, Lineberger, and Holdsclaw. This was an affluent district. The number of black polls almost equaled the number of white polls. In addition two stud horses and two cotton gins were taxed. The location of this district in the Catawba Valley,in an earlier settled area, and the preponderance of English-speaking peoples may account for the affluence. Clearly the Sherrill, McCorkle, Abernathy, and Knox families account for a significant number (22) of the surnames.
Capt. Wilkinson's Company includes some of the 1st Company of the 1790 Lincoln County census. A few persons in the 10th Company of the 1790 Lincoln County census would also be included within Capt. Wilkinson's district: Sherrills, Turbefills, Harwells, Knoxes, Crunkleton, and Abernathy family members. It may be more accurate to say that the Wilkinson Company was a combination of both of these 1790 Companies.
Kathy Gunter Sullivan:
In 1804, this district was captained by Gardner Harwell. The 1806 captain was James Wilkinson as in that year the county court appointed the following men as patrols in Captain James Wilkinson’s district: Jonathan Long, Thomas Long, John Turbyfill Jr., Thomas Harwell, and Robert Abernathy.
Wilkinson continued as company captain until at least 1810, and on the 1810 census, his district is identified on the following pages in an erratic, reverse-order sequence:
p. 482. Robert Abernathy-Robert Childers
p. 461. Absolom Duncan-James Haines
p. 460. Francis Harwell-James Lee Jr.
p. 459. Michael Lineberry-Begin Perkins
p. 458. Begin Perkins Jr.-Jeptha Sherrill
p. 457. Elisha Sherrill-Wiley Weston
