AREA HISTORY AND LOCATION [written by Linda Moore]: The location of Battle Park is 1308 Falls Road, Rocky Mount, Nash County, NC. Battle Park’s boundaries are Falls Road, Battle Park Lane and the Tar River. Nestled beneath the trees along Battle Park Lane, you will find a relatively small cemetery which may be referred to as the “Battle Park Cemetery” or the “Rocky Mount Mill Cemetery.” The historic Rocky Mount Cotton Mill opened approximately 1816 and was owned by the Battle Family. Throughout the earlier years of operation employees of the mill rented houses in close proximity of the mill, collectively forming a very tight-knit community of family, friends and co-workers. This area, originally consisting of approximately 145 homes, a grocery store, a school and a church, became known as The Mill Village, and was later incorporated into the City of Rocky Mount in the 1920′s. When death occurred in the community, in many instances employees or members of their family, were buried in the mill cemetery. The cotton mill remained in operation until 1996 when it became necessary to close the business due to general decline in the textile industry.
Linda’s Note of Battle Park Cemetery: “Time has taken its toll on the cemetery. Through the years many of the headstones or grave markers have deteriorated; some are difficult to read. I prepared a survey of this cemetery in September 1997. Also, I located a cemetery survey in a Nash County tombstone transcription book located in the research room of Braswell Memorial Library in Rocky Mount, NC. It was my hope that the older survey would have names and dates from markers and monuments that were no longer in the cemetery, or no longer legible. The following is a combination of my transcription in 1997 and a transcription which was done in the late 1960′s, early 1970′s. Also, I have made miscellaneous notes that have been shared with us by various family members. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about a name or date that has been referenced.
