SUBJECT MATTER FOOTNOTES:
THIS INFORMATION obtained from: [1] family members especially EDITH IRMA
[BELL] PROCTOR [1905 – 1977] Cokey Road, Rocky Mount, Edgecombe County, NC and CHARLES LINDSEY BELL [1920 – 1993]; [2] United States Census Records, 1850 to 1930; [3] State of North Carolina Birth and Death Records; and [4] Wilson and Nash County, NC Cemetery Records.
*JOHN LINDSEY BELL, SR., his second wife: LULA ROSE BELL and their son:
JAMES THOMAS BELL were first buried in a family graveyard, between two
barns, on John Lindsey Bell Sr.’s last farm, off Highway #43, between
Dortches and Benvenue, Edgecombe County, NC until 1996, when the efforts
of his grandson RAYMOND BELL negotiated with the land owners to have
their remains reinterned to The Ricks-Bell Graveyard, about a mile east
of the intersection of Old Carriage Road and Oak Level Road in Oak Level
Township, Nash County, NC, on the south side of Oak Level Road.
t. JAMES HENRY BELL, SR. was born in Nahunta Township, Wayne County, NC
in 1828, in a part of the township that became Black Creek Township,
Wilson County, NC when the latter was created in 1855. In the United
States Census of 1860, he is identified as living in Black Creek Township,
Wilson County, North Carolina. On the afternoon, of May 3, 1864, in the
Battle of the Wilderness, he was wounded in the right arm, transported
to Lynchburg, Virginia for medical treatment, as were most of the
Confederate men injuried in the battle, and died from complications on
May 24, 1864. He is buried in Confederate Burial Ground in the Old
Cemetery, next to where the hospital stood in Lynchburg, Virginia.
For our family, hallowed ground indeed!
o. LUCINDA EVANS was born in Edgecombe County, NC in 1827, in a section
that became Black Creek Township in Wilson County, NC when that county
was created in 1855 from parts of Wayne, Nash, Johnston and Edgecombe
Counties, NC.
z. Born 24 February 1852, DELLA JOSEPHINE AYCOCK was never listed, in
the United States Census Records from 1860 to 1880, as living with her
father, JESSE AYCOCK and his second wife MARY PIKE AYCOCK. In fact,
after her mother EDITH AYCOCK dies in 1854, she appears, as an eight
year old girl, in the 1860 Census living in Nahunta Township, Wayne
County, NC and her father JESSE AYCOCK has moved to Black Creek Township
in Wilson County, NC with his second wife. Thus, even at seven years
old in 1860 she lives with J. L. Barnes in Wayne County, NC; appears in
the 1870 census, when she was seventeen, living with Turner Joyner in
1880, when she is twenty-seven. For whatever reason, DELLA JOSEPHINE AYCOCK never lived in the same house with her father and step-mother.
x. JESSE AYCOCK was born 24 June 1825 in Nahunta Township, Wayne
County, NC. In the 1850s, he moves to Black Creek Township, Wilson,
NC with his second wife MARY PIKE. In fact, in the 1860, 1870 and 1880
censuses, he is listed as living in Black Creek Township, Wilson County,
North Carolina.
y. EDITH AYCOCK, the first wife of JESSE AYCOCK. b. 8 November 1830.
m. November, 1850. d. 24 June 1854. She was born and lived her life
in Nahunta Township, Wayne County, NC
