UNITED STATES CENSUS OF 1860, NASH COUNTY, NC:
THE AFRICAN AMERICAN AND MIXED RACE POPULATION
FOR WHOM THEIR FULL NAMES ARE LISTED BY CENSUS TAKERS.
Researched, Formatted and Posted by: Earl P. Bell, Jr.
Posted: 3 June 2010
In United States Census of 1860 for Nash County, North Carolina, the mixed race people living in the county are identified as “mulatto.” In the list below, if the race of a person is not provided, with their name, this confirms that they were recorded in the 1860 census as a “mulatto.” Also, all the people listed below were born in North Carolina. Further, when males and females have obvious first names indicating gender, specification of such is not provided. Listed names that might not clearly convey a person’s gender will be followed by the gender specification recorded by the census taker.
All African Americans are identified as “Black” in the census. In this file, surnames are in caps and bolded. In the frequent cases where an individual or two appear in a household without their extended family, they are usually working for someone, most often a white farmer. Please note, the decision to classify an individual as black or mulatto in the 1860 census rests exclusively on the judgment of the census takers in the various townships of Nash County. Thus, the process is no better or worse than their judgment. Wise family researchers will compare data for several censuses to ascertain the accuracy of such classifications.
In the 1860 Slave Schedules for Nash County, 4684 people are identified as a slave. Of this number, the male population, in the county, was 2272 and the female population was 2412. Also, 306 mixed race people are listed as slaves. Thus, 4378 people are identified as “black.” Since all slaves under the law were property, they were bought and sold as such. In fact, beyond the sales among individuals, there was a substantial number of them who were bought and sold at public auctions in slave markets. The largest slave market in the South was in New Orleans.
In the Slave Schedules in the United States Census of 1860 for Nash County, the appearance of mixed race people in the various townships is decidedly uneven. For example, the number is relatively high in proportion to the larger population in Arringtons, Collins and Mannings Townships while low in Coopers, Dortches, and Winsteads.
The United States Census of 1860 for Nash County, not the Slave Schedules records the full names of five hundred twenty-five mixed race people and ninety African Americans. They are listed below by their full names and geographic area in which they lived. It was not until after the Civil War in the United States Census of 1870 that all people of mixed race and African American ancestry are recorded with a first name and a surname. Again, in 1860, only 525 people of mixed race ancestry and 90 of African American ancestry are listed with their full names.
