Opening of Robert Bruce Memorial Hospital (1906)

The following information appears in the Charlotte Medical Journal (v. 29 – July 1906)

The formal opening of this recently erected institution in Kinston, N. C, with the laying of the corner stone of the Elizabeth Parrot Memorial Wards by the Grand Lodge of Masons of North Carolina, in the presence of the Governor of the State and many other distinguished citizens, may well be noted as marking an important epoch in the progress of medicine in Eastern Carolina.

The hospital, which in its various departments will be one of the most complete in the State, is located on a beautiful and extensive park, generously donated for the purpose by Mr. and Mrs.  J.A. McDaniel, of Kinston, in memory of their son Robert Bruce.  The Charity Annex, or the Elizabeth Parrot Memorial Wards, is physically connected with the private hospital recently opened for general medical and surgical work by Drs. J.M. and W.T. Parrott, of Kinston, N.C., and is their munificent memorial to their deceased mother, the late Mrs. Elizabeth Parrott.

While there has not been the lavish wasteful expenditure of moneys so often seen in the exterior construction of modern hospital buildings, no expense has been spared to render the institution complete in its every important detail for the comfort, convenience, and proper medical and surgical care of suffering humanity.

Being fully conversant with the high order of professional ability of the Drs. Parrott we can but feel that our congratulations are due the people and the profession of that section of the State naturally tributary to Kinston, in having located in their midst an institution of high grade character and officered and managed by such accomplished gentleman of the profession.  Again, are we reminded of the manifestly growing disposition on the part of our Southern doctors to provide near the homes of our people hospital facilities where skill and service are the equal of the best, and as good as any to be had on the face of the earth, can be provided at an equivalent or even lessened expense, and without the discomforts and dangers incident to the transporting of invalids by long railway journeys to the great cities of the East.

Deed: WHITFIELD, George to LASSITER, Jesse (1845)

Contributed by Doug Rader
15 Dec 2010

Doug acquired this “burned deed period” legal document related to the Lassiter, WHitfield and Waters families of Lenoir County, NC.  It is dated 4 March 1845, and is an agreement by George Whitfield to sell to Jesse Lassiter (“Lasitter”; both of Lenoir County) half of his lands on the Meadow and Brushy Arm Pocosin, adjacent to Jesse Waters, Haywood Waters, Josh (?) Waters, Charles Fuller and Richard Sutton. The rate was to be $3.75 per acre, paid in three equal installments; the acreage and payment schedule are not given. Witnesses are William Fields and N.W. (?) Blount.

This copy does not reflect the registration of that agreement, but probably pertains to the deed registered in burned Lenoir County Deed Book 31, page 248 (as listed in the extant cross-index to those deeds) from George Whitfield to Jesse Lassiter. (That burned deed book is reported to have covered deed registered between 1 July 1846 and December 1849, and so is consistent with the date of the agreement.)  Doug notes that there are others deeds reported among these parties in the grantor and grantee indices, including from Whitfield to Needham Waters (Book 30:11), and from Jesse Warters to Haywood Warters (Book 31:314).

Wedding of G.C. Smith & Pauline Pace

It pays to volunteer information online :-)

For several years I’ve been indexing the Kinston Free Press and making excerpts available online in a database.  I am currently in the process of moving that data to a new database, but this week I was contacted by two family members of one of the individuals included.  The notice I’d included online was the first confirmation the family had of the marriage.

This marriage notice appeared in the October 2, 1905 issue of the Kinston Free Press noting the wedding of G.C. Smith & Pauline Pace . The text is faint, but reads “Mr. G.C. SMITH, of Lynchburg, Va., holding a position with Einstein Bros. in this city, and Miss Pauline PACE, of Lagrange, were married in Roxboro August 24 by Rev. E.D. HOLMES.  the marriage was kept a secret until recently and friends are congratulating the couple.  The bride has been living in her home in LaGrange until Sunday afternoon, when Mr. and Mrs. SMITH came to this city and are at present boarding at Mrs. COX’s, on Queen street.

Recently, G.C. & Pauline’s granddaughter contacted me to ask for more info for all I’d had in the index was a summary.  It turns out though that she AND a cousin of hers  were both interested for they are both granddaughters of Mr. Smith.   His name was Grover Cleveland Smith (later changed to Gilbert Smythe) and Ethel Pauline Pace was his first wife.  He later remarried Ms. Helen Fry and had a second family. The second cousin is he and wife Helen’s great-granddaughter.

G.C. & wife Helen

I wonder what else the cousins may find as they seek more details. I am just pleased that my contribution was able to be of help  – this is what the USGenWeb project is all about!
