Obituary of Evelyn F. Atkins ~ 2008

Evelyn F. Atkins, born July 28, 1928 of Marion, NC, age 80, lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease September 3, 2008 in Overland Park, Kansas. Born in McDowell County to Thomas John and Annie Helen Conway McDaniel Fleming, she was the third of eight children. Evelyn was a 1945 graduate of Marion High School, a graduate of Blanton Business College and later Mars Hill College. She was married November 16, 1946 to Kennith C. Atkins (born November 17, 1919 and died May 16, 1990, son of Coran C. and Florence Buckner Atkins).
They had two children, James Wade, born July 3, 1947 and Rebecca Atkins (Adams) born March 4, 1961.
Evelyn and husband Kennith along with son James moved to Columbus, Ohio in 1955 where daughter Rebecca was born in 1961. Evelyn returned with her family to North Carolina in 1969, living in Marion until deteriorating health necessitated a move closer to her daughter in Leawood, Kansas. Evelyn worked as a secretary for Marion Manufacturing Company and later for Baxter Health Care. In 1984, at the age of 55, she fulfilled a life-long dream, graduating from Mars Hill College with a bachelor’s degree in business. She retired from Baxter in 1991. She and husband Ken, co-owned Evelyn’s Breads and Cakes. They enjoyed their retirement visiting with customers and traveling.
Evelyn was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, McDowell Hospital Auxiliary,
Christian Women’s Club and various bridge clubs. She loved her family, friends and community, and used her time and talents enriching the lives of those around her. She will be dearly missed.
Evelyn is survived by son James Wade Atkins and daughter-in-law Diane Bergman Atkins of Charlotte, NC; daughter Rebecca Ann Atkins Adams and son-in-law Paul Bradley Adams of Leawood, Kansas; sister Judy Roper of Raleigh, NC; brothers Paul Fleming of Peculiar, MO and Robert Fleming; five grandchildren: James Coran Atkins and grand daughter-in-law Sarah Newsom Atkins of Hilton Head, SC, Richard Kenneth Atkins and grand daughter-in-law Bozanka Kiprovska Atkins of Woodside, NY, Jonathan Bradley Adams, Jefferson Scott Adams and Caroline Elizabeth Adams all of Leawood, Kansas and great grandchildren, Benjamin James and Audrey Elizabeth Atkins, children of James and Sarah Atkins of Hilton Head, SC.
A funeral service was held Monday September 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Marion with Rev. Michael Swofford officiating. The family received friends Sunday September 7, 2008 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. at Westmoreland Funeral Home. Interment was in McDowell Memorial Park.
