Transcribed by Joseph Cook
Bobby “Lefty” Gardner, age 66 of Marion passed away on Saturday October 25, 2008 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. A native of McDowell County, he was born on January 1, 1942 to the late George W. Gardner and Bertha Birchfield Gardner. Lefty was retired from the Brewer Construction Co. as a mason. His true calling, however, was making music and he will be remembered for his many years as the dobro player with the Clear Creek Bluegrass and Gospel Band with whom he played at many churches and at other events in western North Carolina. A true family man, he loved his family and friends and enjoyed a very special relationship with his grandchildren who considered him as much a parent to them as their own parents. He will be missed.
Surviving are his wife of almost 50 years, Clara Webb Gardner; his daughter Vickie G. Milam and her husband Jerry, with whom he and Clara resided; a brother Dean Gardner and his wife Rita of Marion; and his two loving grandchildren, Hannah Hudson and her husband Chad of Bostic and Luke Milam of Marion.
A funeral service was held on Monday October 27, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Brian Gentry and Dr. George Ellis officiating. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. A private burial followed at McDowell Memorial Park.
