Obituary of Harry Marvin Gilliam ~ 2009

Harry Marvin Gilliam of Old Fort, 89, passed away Monday January 19, 2009 at his residence. Mr. Gilliam was born in McDowell County to the late Clarence Gilliam and Rhada Murphy Gilliam. He was a member of Cherry Spring Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Adell Davis Gilliam; two brothers, Ralph & Paul Gilliam, and 1 sister Jewel Vess.
He is survived by two daughters, Margaret Lavender and husband Donald, Lois Barlowe and husband Earnest; a son Jerry Gilliam and wife Diane; a brother Bruce Gilliam and wife Shirley, all of Old Fort; one sister Ivaleigh Walker of Asheville; seven grandchildren, Calvin Lavender, Lisa Kuykendall, Maro Nazworth, Wendy Chiappini, Franklin Barlowe, Donna Davis and Becky Gilliam; 17 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday January 23, 2009 at Cherry Springs Baptist Church in Old Fort. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday January 22, 2009 at Kirksey Funeral Chapel in Old Fort. Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort is assisting the Gilliam family.
