Transcribed by Joseph Cook
Peggy Ann Lonon Johnson died Thursday August 7, 2008, surrounded by her loving husband, family and friends, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Born February 6, 1938 in Marion, NC, to Zula Gouge Lonon and the late Claude Finley Lonon, she grew up in the North Cove Community in McDowell County. Peggy graduated from North Cove High School in 1955 and from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1958. She began her career as a first grade teacher at North Cove School and after one year began teaching home economics and science there, followed by several years teaching at Pleasant Gardens High School. She then became Director of Child Nutrition for McDowell County Schools and later the Director of Child Nutrition for Caldwell County Schools. She retired in 1991 after more than 30 years of service. Peggy was known for her many talents and hobbies which included sewing, decorating, cooking, reading, working crossword puzzles and her beautiful cross-stitch pieces.
She was known for her positive “can do” attitude throughout her life, with no circumstance facing her that couldn’t be overcome with a smile, a little hard work, and a cheerful disposition. She loved to travel, especially to North Carolina’s beaches and the Outer Banks. Her family and friends will long remember her high-energy spirit and positive attitude through several years of debilitating illness.
She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 21 years, James E. Johnson of the home; two sons, Greg Smith and wife Mitzi of Sanford and Brent Smith of Drexel; two granddaughters, Emma Lonon Smith of Asheville and Brooke Lonon Smith of Drexel; one step daughter, Gina Johnson Lowder and husband John of Winchester, VA; one step son, James Edwin Johnson and wife Sheri of Harrisburg; five step grandchildren, Jennifer Burleson and husband Ryan of Marion; Joshua Johnson and wife Brooke of China Grove; John Lowder III of Missoula, MT, Andy Lowder and wife Jacquelyn of Winchester, VA, and Daniel Lowder of Winchester, VA; two great step grandchildren, Elisah and Sylvie Burleson; one sister, Patty Hollifield and husband Roy of Marion; one nephew Kip Hollifield and wife Dawn of Marion; one brother-in-law Tom Johnson of Marion; three sisters-in-law, Kathleen Penland of Greensboro, Lallage Neill and husband Ralph of Montgomery, AL, and Wanda Hansil and husband John of Concord; one special aunt Reva Lonon of Johnson City, TN; special caregivers, Revelee Ervin of Morganton and Alta Austin of Valdese.
The Reverend Dr. Thomas Bland conducted a memorial service and celebration of Peggy’s life at 2:00 Saturday August 9, 2008 at First Baptist Church, Morganton, NC. The family received friends from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the church. At other times, the family will be at the Johnson residence 404 Poteat Drive in Drexel. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation 1332 N. Holstead St. Suite 201 Chicago, IL 60642. Westmoreland Funeral Home and
Crematory, Marion, NC is in charge of arrangements. A philosopher once wrote; there are persons who shape their lives by the fear of death, and persons who shape their lives by the joy and satisfaction of life. The former live dying; the latter die living. Peggy died living. An online register is available under OBITUARIES at www.westmorelandfuneralhome.com.
