Obituary of James W. (Jim) Laney, Jr ~ 2009

James W. (Jim) Laney, Jr., age 84 of Marion passed away Wednesday February 25, 2009 at Autumn Care of Marion.  A native of Morganton, NC, Jim was born on August 25, 1924, son of Kate Sherrill Laney and James W. Laney, Sr.  He was predeceased by his parents and his only brother Edgar S. Laney.

Mr. Laney is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Elaine Bowman Laney of the home; also his three sons, William J. Laney and wife Linda of Roswell, GA, J. Vernon Laney and wife Dondi of Winchester, VA, and Keith B. Laney and wife Kara Reel of Marion; also two “special” daughters, Virginia J. Terry and Aresa Boykin; eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; two nephews and four nieces.

Jim was a 35 year retiree of Wachovia (formerly First Union National Bank).  He served as President of Marion Civitan Club and Civitan Classic; President of Marion McDowell Merchants Association – 1978-79; Grand Marshall of Christmas Parade in 1979.  He also served as Chairman of March of Dimes for many years.  Jim was a dedicated Christian man, serving in First Baptist Church as a long time deacon, church treasurer for many years, choir member, training union leader and served in many other capacities.  Jim served in the European Theater during WWII.  After service he graduated from Kings Business College in Charlotte, NC and in later years attended the Carolina School of Banking at the University of NC in Chapel Hill.

Services were held at First Baptist Church of Marion on Sunday March l, 2009.  Visitation was from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm and the funeral followed at 3:00 pm with Dr. Scott Hagaman and Rev. Terry Childers officiating.  Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Army.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Youth Tour Mission 99 N. Main St. Marion, NC 28752.  Westmoreland Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family.
