Obituary of Russell J. McKinney ~ 2009

Russell J. McKinney, age 88 of Marion passed away on Thursday January 15, 2008 at his residence. A native of Mitchell County, he was born on February 16, 1920 to the late Briscoe McKinney and Esther Collis McKinney. Russell was retired from the NC Highway Department and was a member of Turkey Cove Baptist Church. A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star Citation awarded by the American Legion. His wife of 58 years, Linnie Hollifield McKinney preceded him in death.
Surviving are two sons, Ron McKinney and his wife Ila of Clarksville, TN and David McKinney and his wife Marilyn of Marion; two sisters, Bernice Freeman of Spruce Pine and Muriel Hoppes of Nebo; five grandchildren, Chad, Jennifer, Joshua, Travis and Christopher; a number of nieces and nephews; five great grandchildren; and a special caregiver Geraldine Autrey. The family wants to convey special thanks to Hospice of McDowell County and Dr. Karl Spears of Asheville.
A funeral service to honor his life was held on Sunday January 18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Turkey Cove Baptist Church with Revs. David Edwards and Milton Hollifield officiating. The family received friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
