Elizabeth Caldwell Padgett, age 91 of Marion, NC, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday March 25, 2009 at Autumn Care of Marion. A native of Rutherford County, she was born on March 15, 1918 to the late Barron Pressly Caldwell, a World War I veteran, and the late Virginia Haynes Caldwell. Mrs. Padgett was a granddaughter of the late Raleigh Rutherford Haynes of Rutherford County. She attended Stratford College in Virginia and graduated from Duke University in 1939. She taught school during the 1950’s and 1960’s in the McDowell County School System and operated Blue Ridge Antiques during the 1970’s and 1980’s.
She was always interested in education, and in 1985 responding to a perceived need in McDowell County for a traditional Christian school, was instrumental in founding Marion Christian Academy. She served on the original board of directors of the school and later chaired the Marion Christian Academy Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Padgett was a woman of great faith. The distinguishing characteristics of her life were devotion to God and Christ, prayer, action, love of country, and service to her church. She had a great love for God’s Word and was a serious Bible student for most of her life.
She is survived by her daughter Virginia Haynes Palmer of Marion; three granddaughters, Laura Palmer Hughes, Sarah Elizabeth Palmer and Diane Hale Fregosi and two great grandchildren, Kathryn Anne Hughes and Luke Patton Hughes.
