Obituary of Louis Shirlen Sr ~ 2009

Louis Shirlen Sr. of Grand Junction, Colo. passed away January 23, 2009 at the Care Center of Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado in Grand Junction, after a valiant battle with cancer. Louis was the second of four sons born to Desma and Cecil Shirlen, born Dec. 7, 1951 in Old Fort, where he spent his childhood. Louis had been an avid sportsman throughout his life. He shared memories of his youth reminiscent of the great times he spent hunting and fishing with his friends and brothers in the hills and forests of the Smokey Mountains surrounding his childhood home. He often remembered fondly the times he spent working alongside his dad and brothers at his father’s sawmill while growing up. He treasured immensely the innumerable things that he learned from both his mother and his father. During his high school years, Louis excelled in sports; especially football, baseball, and basketball. After high school, he was awarded a basketball scholarship to Piedmont University in Georgia. Louis delved into every opportunity to participate in recreational sports throughout his adulthood. Louis shared his love of sports with his youngest son Louie and they enjoyed spending time together honing Louie’s athletic skills as he participated in various extracurricular sports and activities.
Later in life, Louis returned to college and graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 1995 from Mesa State College, in Grand Junction, Colo. with a degree in accounting. He was awarded the Gold Key Award of the accounting class of 1995. He was a partner at the accounting firm, Cuccetti, Baldwin & Co. in Grand Junction. In addition to being a CPA, Louis was also a Certified Financial Planner, and Registered Investment Advisor. He also was a licensed stockbroker and a trusted financial advocate by his clients. Throughout his career, he honored his clients, and took great pride in serving them faithfully and earnestly until his death. Louis is preceded in death by his mother Desma Mae (Poteat) Shirlen.
He is survived by his wife Dot and their 11-year-old son Louie Jr. of Palisade, Colo.; his three adult children, twin daughters, Breaa and Leah Shirlen of Marion; his son and daughter-in-law Isaac and Mika Shirlen of St. Paul, Minn.; his stepchildren Christopher-Michael Smith of Grand Junction, Colo.; Jennifer Smith of Grand Junction, Colo.; and two grandchildren; as well as his three brothers, Darrell, Charles and Vaughn Shirlen; and three nieces and five nephews, all of Old Fort. Louis also leaves behind his treasured and lifelong friend Gary Burnette also of Old Fort, as well as countless and cherished friends he made throughout his life.
Louis’ family would like to thank the doctors who graciously cared for him during his illness, as well as the many friends and family who have shown their love and support during this sorrowful time. Receiving of friends will be held at Kirksey Funeral Home in Old Fort on Saturday January 31 from 4 until 5:30 p.m. with a short memorial service from 5:30 until 6 p.m.
