Obituary of Harold H. Silvers ~ 2008

MSGT. (Ret.) Harold H. Silvers, age 71 of the Dysartsville community went to be with the Lord on Wednesday November 12, 2008 at his residence. He was born on February 16, 1937 to the late Roy Hicks Silvers and Martha Hunter Silvers. Harold joined the U. S. Army in 1954 and served with the 11th, 82nd, 101st and the 18th Airborne Corps.

He spent a large part of his 20 year military career as a Green Beret distinguishing himself as an exceptional soldier and individual. He served 2 tours and several missions in Vietnam and was awarded many commendations before his retirement in 1975.

Harold married Peggy Griggs, his wife of more than 53 years, in 1955 and upon retiring from the military he and Peggy returned to McDowell County and settled in the Dysartsville community. He was a member of Sunnyvale Baptist Church. An infant daughter Tilanna Silvers preceded him in death. Surviving in addition to his wife are two children, James Ray Silvers and his wife Dawn of Marion and Crystal Allen and her husband Roger of Dysartsville; a brother Jerry Silvers of Nebo; two sisters, Shirley Pope of Asheville and Christine Hewitt of Hickory; six grandchildren, Misty, Harley, Daphne, Cory, Lacey and Erica; and two great grandchildren, Lily and Lexie.

A funeral service was held on Saturday November 15, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Jimmy Buchanan officiating. The family received friends from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial was in Cherry Springs Memorial Park with full military honors provided by the U. S. Army and conducted by a U. S. Army Chaplain.
